Unit Argumentative Essay

Are mistakes key to making discoveries? In certain situations, mistakes can be key to

making a discovery; however, most discoveries are found with hard work and dedication. One of

my claims is that “hard work and careful science lead to discoveries,” (In Praise of Careful

Science). The scientist John Denker said “I am reminded of the rock star who said it took him 15

years to become an overnight sensation.” The meaning to this quote meant although the rock star

became an overnight sensation it took him 15 years to get there, putting his time and energy

putting into his songs to get where he is now. In conclusion, hard work and study will lead you to

the discovery.

Another one of my examples why I am against the mistakes are key to making

discoveries is, that Percy spencer from the novel (how a melted bar of chocolate changed our

kitchen). The main character Percy Spencer accidentally discovered the magnetron’s property for

heating food. “that one moment overshadowed many years of careful science.” The reason why I

used that example from the story was because the equal important process after discovery is also

ignored. All in all, my conclusion for this segment is give credit where credit is due, especially

when they discovered it or help discover it.

In conclusion my thoughts and opinions about the mistakes do not lead to big discoveries

come from textual evidence and a personal experience. My personal experience with this

happened when I was younger I lived in Oregon in a house near a small forest, my friends and I

would go explore the forest afterschool we would go discover the forest and leave tracks behind

so we knew where we came from so we wouldn’t get lost. We would study the forest and explore

the forest, one-day afterschool my friends and I found a cool little tree house with a ladder. For

the remainder of the school year we would chill in the treehouse. We discovered it by studying

the forest and explore it, there was no mistake that happened to find that treehouse. Overall,

mistakes lead to discoveries depending on who you ask in my opinion it does not because I

explained why and had evidence or all of my claims.
