SCIENCE GRADE 10 NOVEMBER TEST

Name: __________________________________________________ Score: ____________

Direction: Do as indicated.

1. A uniform strut with a negligible weight is mounted by a hinge on a wall as shown in the
following diagram. The strut is held at an angle of 60 degrees with the wall by a horizontal wire.
The strut supports a weight of 10 N suspended from its end.
• Draw the free body diagram of the system.
• Find the force F exerted by the strut and the tension T on the wire.

2. Torque is the product of force and distance (moment arm). Work is also the product of force
and distance, yet torque and work are different. What is it about the distances that make the
torque and work different? Write a paragraph to answer this question.

3. A diver weighing 500 N is positioned at the right end of a diving board with a length of 4m and
negligible weight. The board is bolted down at the left end while being supported 1.5m away
from the fulcrum as shown in the following diagram.
• Draw the free body diagram of the system.
• Find the forces F1and F2 that the bolt and the fulcrum, respectively, exert on the board.

4. Position yourself with your heels and back to a wall. In that position, try to reach your toes. Can
you do it without falling? Explain why.

5. A change in weight distribution causes a change in the position of centre of gravity. This
situation is very critical to the safe landing of an airplane. In a properly loaded plane, the centre
of gravity is between the front and rear landing gears. If the plane is overloaded toward the
rear, the centre of gravity shifts behind the rear landing gear and an accident might occur
during landing at the runway.
• Suppose you are an airplane passenger. Is it advisable for you to carry excess baggage
even if you pay for it? Why?
• Suppose in the near future, you become an airline personnel in charge of loading
cargoes in an airplane. How will you arrange the luggage and other cargoes in the
compartment?

6. Explain why lowering your body to pick up something from the floor by bending
your knees is more advisable than by bending your back. Cite consequences
that will happen if this safety tip is not followed.
Direction: Write the word of the correct answer.
1. Which is the condition of an object when the vector sum of all the forces is zero?
• Torque
• Equilibrium
• Center of mass
• Center of gravity
2. Which set of parallel forces can produce static translational equilibrium?
• 1 N and 1 N to the right and 1 N to the left
• 1 N and 1 N to the right and 2 N to the left
• 1 N and 2 N to the right and 2 N to the left
• 1 N and 2 N to the right and 4 N to the left
3. Two men are pushing a jeepney forward with a force of 20 N each. What must be the magnitude
of the single backward-pushing force that will make the jeepney in equilibrium?
• 20 N
• 40 N
• Less than 20 N
• More than 40 N
4. Which of the following statements below holds true for the tensions in the following diagram?
• A is equal to B
• A is greater than B
• B is greater than C
• C is greater than A
5. Which of the following conditions does not make an object in a state of equilibrium?

• The sum of all the torques is equal to zero.

• The sum of all the downward forces is equal to zero.
• The sum of all the forces acting on the object is equal to zero.
• The sums of all the x components and of all the y components of the forces are both
equal to zero.
6. Which refers to the point in an object where its weight is concentrated?
• Torque
• Pivot point
• Moment arm
• Centre of gravity
7. Which refers to the perpendicular distance between the axis of rotation of an object and the line of
action of a force acting on it?
• Pivot
• Torque
• Fulcrum
• Moment arm
8. A meter stick is balanced on its 50cm mark. If you tie a 10 N weight at the 20cm mark, where
should a 30 N weight will be tied to maintain balance?
• 60cm mark
• 80cm mark
• 90cm mark
• 100cm mark
9. Two boys, one heavier than the other, are sitting on the opposite ends of a seesaw. What
adjustment should be made so that the seesaw will be balanced?
• The lighter boy should sit nearer the fulcrum.
• The heavier boy should sit nearer the fulcrum.
• The heavier boy should sit farther from the fulcrum.
• The lighter boy and the heavier boy should remain sitting at the ends.
10. Suppose the three objects shown below were placed on top of a table. Which of the following lists
the arrangement from the most stable to the least stable object?
• I, II, III
• II, III, I
• II, I, III
• III, II, I

Direction: Answer each question that follows.

1. Why is it possible to overhang a uniform rectangular brick over a table slightly less
than half its length from the edge of a table?
2. Why do tightrope walkers carry a long, narrow beam perpendicularly to their body
when balancing on a tightrope?
3. Why is a doorknob placed near the edge of a door, far from hinges and not at the
middle of the door?
