7. FIRE PUMP START UP PROCEDURE FIRE PUMP START UP PROCEDURE LOCATION: FIRE PUMP HOUSE, DR MODULE A & B GOULDS MAKE CENTRIFUGAL FIRE PUMPS ( TAG # 76.001 & 76.002 & GRUNDFOS MAKE JOCKEY PUMP ( TAG # 76.004) PREPARATION FOR START UP ‘A. Check rotation of the motor with lock out power to driver. B. Make sure coupling hubs are securely fastened to the shafts and the coupling spacer has been removed. C. Unlock driver power. D. Make sure every one is clear. Jog driver just long enough to determine direction of rotation. Rotation must correspond to arrow on bearing housing. E. Lock out power to driver. F. Install and lubricate coupling per manufacturers instructions. G. Install coupling guard. Never operate the pump without coupling guard properly installed. Personal injury will occur if pump is run without coupling guard, H. Bearings must be lubricated property in order to prevent excess heat generation, sparks and premature failure. Sufficient lubricant is inserted at factory for 2,000 hours of operation. Please refer IOM for preventive maintenance for grease lubrication instructions. |. Check to be sure that driver bearings are properly lubricated. Contact motor manufacturer for lubrication instructions. J. Before packing stuffing box, make sure box is clean and contains no foreign material K. Rotate shaft by hand to ensure it rotates smoothly and there is no rubbing which could lead to excess heat generation and or sparks. L. Pump must always be fully primed and suction pipe full of liquid before at all times during operation. A build up gases within the pump, sealing system and or process piping system may result in an explosive environment within the pump or process piping system. Ensure process piping system, pump and sealing system are properly vented prior to operation. If pump Is run dry, rotating parts within pump may seize to stationary parts since they depend upon liquid being pumped for lubrication, STARTING THE PUMP A. Make sure suction valve and any recirculation lines are open. B. Fully close or partially open discharge valve as dictated by system conditions. C. Have the pump started observing proper method of starting for various type of drive. D. Slowly open discharge valve until the desired flow is obtained. E. Observe pump for vibration levels, bearings for signs of overheating and excessive noise. If normal levels are exceeded, shut down and resolve. Observe alignment of pump and driver. Note tightness of foundation bolts. G. Observe stuffing boxes of pump. With water seal supplied with water a small leak at stuffing mn box glands is necessary. Once the pump in operation for some time, and the packing has been completely run-in, drippage from the stuffing boxes should be at least 40-60 drops per minute. This will indicate proper packing and shaft sleeve lubrication and cooling. H. Watch pressure gauges. Signs of suction leaks may be indicated by flickering of gauges or knocking of pump. Gauge readings also may suggest that there are obstructions in suction line such as screens are clogged, tank water supply is inadequate or intakes are insufficiently immersed. |. Have outlets closed, including relief valve, and note that pump shuts off at the proper pressure (for horizontal shaft pumps usually not over 120percent of rated pressure. J. If pumps are arranged for automatic as well as manual starting, have the pump started by operating a test connection. K. Electric pump controllers have detailed instructions given on the controller and these must be followed. Manual starting should be repeated a number of times at each set. STARTING AND FIELD TESTING OF ELECTRICAL DRIVEN FIRE PUMP SYSTEMS Following are the general outline for starting and field testing fire pump systems. 1. Be specific and complete when ordering fire pumps and accessories so that the necessary and correct items can be supplied. 2. Trouble cannot be tolerated on the day of field acceptance test, therefore 3. After the installation is complete and the fire pump system is pressurized and checked by AL Aswad; an initial test should be conducted. This is to check the controller and motor. The test should be conducted as follows:
