The sun’s rays make the greatest angle at noon. At noontime, the rays are almost directly
overhead. This is the hottest time of the day. The earth gets slanted rays as the earth rotates away from
the sun. This is why the air is not heated much. As the sun sets, the earth gets cooler. These results to
changes in temperature. A change in temperature means a change in weather, because temperature is a
factor that affects weather. It is an element of weather.
When it is neither too hot nor too cold, we say that the weather is fine. But sometimes it gets
unbearably hot. In this case, it is wise to drink plenty of water and regulate the intake of carbohydrates.
In some places, it gets extremely cold. This time, a diet heavy in carbohydrates would supply adequate
heat for the body. The body heat may be conserved by wearing warm clothing.

Summary
The following ideas were discussed in the module
 Air temperature is the hotness or coldness of air.
 Weather is warm when air temperature is low.
 Air temperature in a given area may change from time to time.
 Temperature is an element of weather.
 Temperature changes affect the behaviour of people.
 During cold weather it wise to:
o Wear warm clothes
o Take more carbohydrates

Cloud Formation

 What you need to know!

You find different kinds of clouds in the sky. Some are thick or thin, others are high or low. Do
you know how these clouds are formed? Where do they come from? Below is an activity that
will help out understand how clouds are formed. Have fun as you go along with the activity.

Activity 1: Cloud Formation

What you Need
A wide-brimmed clear bottle warm water
Plastic sheet Rubber Band/Tape
Ice cubes
What to do
1. Half-fill the bottle with warm water.
2. Cover it with a plastic sheet and secure it with a rubber band or tape.
3. Put several ice cubes on the plastic sheet.
4. Observe the setup.

5. Be able to identify the process that water undergoes.

After the activity you are now ready to answer the questions.
Questions
1. What happened when water is warmed or heated?
Water E V __ __ __ __ __ __ __S
2. What is the gas form or water? W __ __ __ R V __ __ __ R
3. What is formed on the cool underside of the plastic holding the ice?
D __ __P__ __ __S of water
4. What makes water vapour condense in the upper atmosphere?
C __ __ L atmosphere
5. What is formed when the water vapour condenses in the upper atmosphere? C __ __ __ D
6. What two processes are involved in cloud formation?
E __ __ __ __ __ __ TION and C __ __ __ __ __ __ __TION

Read To Know More!
The earth has large quantities of bodies of water. These include the ocean seas, bays and rivers.
The heat of the sun evaporates water into the atmosphere. When water evaporates water into the
atmosphere. When water evaporates it becomes water vapour, Condensation takes place in the cold
upper atmosphere. The particles of water vapour come close to each other and form tiny droplets. This
makes the condensed droplets form clouds.
There are two process involved in cloud formation.
1. Evaporation is a process by which water changes from liquid to vapour.
2. Condensation is a process by which water changes from gas to liquid.

Kinds of clouds
1. Cirrus Clouds. Clouds that form curls are
found high up in the sky where air is very cold.
They contain ice crystals and snow. These
clouds move fast because they are easily blown
by strong winds.
2. Cumulus Clouds. There are large clouds that
look like big piles of cotton balls. These are
fluffy and appear on the clear days.

3. Stratus Clouds. Sometimes a large part of the

sky is covered with flat clouds gathered
together to form gray skies in two to three
layers

4. Nimbus Clouds. These are clouds which are

big and heavy. These clouds bring rain with
thunder and lightning.

5. Fog. There are also clouds that form near the

ground.
Remember!
1. When water is heated, it evaporates and becomes water vapour.
2. Water vapour condenses to form droplets.
3. The two process involved in cloud formation are evaporation and condensation.

Think Criticaly!

halo. What are formed on the side of the glass of halo-halo or cold beverages? How was it
formed?
