industries that uses them. One of the primary advantages of PHEs is that they tend to be more
efficient than alternative heat exchangers. This is due to the design of the units as they have a
large surface area, which enables a greater heat transfer rate. This is due to the variable heat
transfer surface. Plates can be easily removed or added to reach desired requirements.
Plate heat exchangers are not just used for cooling – they are also used in heating
processes. This is because the fluids flow in alternation from hot to cool. This gives them the
ability to either heat the plate or cool them depending on the required needs.
How it Works?
A plate exchanger consists of a series of parallel plates that are placed one above the
other so as to allow the formation of a series of channels for fluids to flow between
them.
The space between two adjacent plates forms the channel in which the fluid flows.
Inlet and outlet holes at the corners of the plates allow hot and cold fluids through
alternating channels in the exchanger so that a plate is always in contact on one side
with the hot fluid and the other with the cold.
The size of a plate can range from a few square centimeters (100 mm x 300 mm side)
up to 2 or 3 square meters (1000 mm x 2500 mm side). The number of plates in a single
exchanger ranges from just ten to seve ral hundred, so reaching surface exchange
areas up to thousands of square meters.
The figure shows the flow of fluids inside the exchanger. Fluids are divided into several
parallel streams and can produce a perfect countercurrent.
PLATES
In the PHE the plates create a frame where the plates are pressed with
headers and tie bars, and the seal is guaranteed by gaskets. Gaskets, in
addition to their sealing effect, serve to direct the flow of the fluids, and
are placed along the grooves at the edges of the plates.

Arragements
Every single plate in a plate heat exchanger (PHE) is actually a hollow thin metallic shell.
The space inside every plate (or the space between every two consecutive plate walls)
works as "passage" for the fluids. So the fluids flow along the "plane of the plates".
Every vertical black line shows a wall of a plate. Thus, each red box (or a blue box) is the
space inside a single "plate". Red and blue arrows are respectively the hot and cold fluid
flow directions. This is the basic diagram of a co-current PHE, the counter-current diagram
can be made similarly.
The plates are stacked because that is the only way to keep the hot and cold fluids in
contact in this setup. Also, this is the most efficient way overall.
Thus, I think you can see intuitively too that this setup gives the highest contact surface
area, making it the most effective setup, contact area wise, which leads to higher heat
exchange that other setups.
