Course Out-Line

TEX-103: Functional English (3+0)


Overall Aims of the Course:
The aim of this course is to ensure that students can communicate effectively in English language. On
the successful completion of this course, the students will be able to use vocabulary correctly, construct
sentences using correct grammar, write meaningful essays and précis and comprehend written English.

Note: The instructor would stress upon the importance of co-curricular reading of books, watching TV
channels and movies in English, listening videos of native speakers and communicating in English outside
the classroom.

Course Learning Outcomes:

Students should be able to achieve following course learning outcomes during completion of the course.

Course Contents:
 Basics of Grammar
 Parts of speech and use of articles
 Sentence structure, active and passive voice
 Practice in unified sentence
 Analysis of phrase, clause and sentence structure
 Transitive and intransitive verbs
 Punctuation and spelling
Module 1: Reading and Comprehension
Comprehending the text from textile books and articles; and answering questions based on them.
Module 2: Discussion
General topics and every day conversation (topics for discussion to be at the discretion of the teacher
keeping in view the level of students)
Module 3: Listening Comprehension
To be improved by showing documentaries/films carefully selected by subject teachers
Module 4: Translation Skills
Urdu to English & English to Urdu
Module 5: Paragraph Writing
Topics to be chosen at the discretion of the teacher
Module 6: Presentation Skills
