Sculpture Auction to Benefit Diabetes Outreach
Noyes Hospital joins forces
with the Mount Morris Career
and Technical Education
Center to bring high-visibility
fundraiser to Dansville
When young talent and a
good cause combine, great
things can happen. Students
from the Metal Trades Program
at the Mount Morris Career and
Technical Education (CTE)
Center have teamed up with
Noyes Hospital to bring an
incredibly unique and highly
visible fundraiser to Dansville,
New York.
Students have been work-
ing tirelessly for weeks to cre-
ate stunning sculptures that
Discover Dansville
will be auctioned off to raise
money for Noyes Hospital, lo-
cated in Dansville, New York.
The funds raised at this auction
will be earmarked for diabetes
treatment and education. 
A Community Kick-off Day
will be held on Saturday, May
11 at 11:00 a.m. in the Star
Theatre at 144 Main Street,
Dansville, New York 14437.
Event committee volunteers,
Metal Trades students, Olie Ol-
son, Dansville Art students and
Matt Buckholz and Greg Mc-
Master, will attend this event to
describe the project, sculptures
and they will share their expe-
riences. This event is open to
the public and the community
is invited to attend.
The auction will take place
Saturday, June 1 at 6:00 p.m.
at The Dansville Moose Club
located at 6 Main Street, Dan-
sville, NY 14437. Tickets for
the auction are $10.00 per per-
son and can be purchased be-
ginning April 24 at the follow-
ing locations:

“On behalf of Noyes Hospi-
tal, and the event committee,
we are honored to be a part of
this endeavor. This has been a
very rewarding project. Work-
ing with Olie Olson and his
students has been a very en-
lightening experience for all
of us,” said Peter Bacon, event
committee member.
Beginning May 11 and con-
tinuing through the month of
May, the sculptures will be
displayed at various businesses
and locations throughout the
Dansville area.
The sculptures are var-
ious themes and stand several
feet high. Examples include a
cardinal, rooster, sunflower, a
life-size dog, a bouquet of roses
and a frog playing a guitar. Art
students from Dansville High
School have painted many of
the sculptures.
“The students are excited
about the cause and the sculp-
tures really reflect their talents.
I’m very proud of the work
they’ve done this semester,”
said Olie Olson, Metal Trades
Instructor.
Since 2010, the Metal
Trades Project has raised al-
most $225,000 to benefit local
charities and not-for-profits.
Last year’s auction raised over
$40,000 to benefit the Su-
zanne’s Comfort Care in Perry,
New York.

The Nicholas H. Noyes
Memorial Hospital is a 67-
bed facility located just off
Route I-390 in Dansville, New
York. The hospital is home to
the outpatient Saunders Surgi-
cal Center, the 24-hour Mary
Saunders Biermann Emer-
gency Department, an After-
Hours clinic and the Ann and
Carl Myers Cancer Center,
a partnership with UR Medi-
cine’s Wilmot Cancer Institute. 
It also houses orthopedic and
physical therapy practices.
The Mount Morris Career
and Technical Education Cen-
ter is a program of the Genesee
Valley Educational Partner-
ship. The Partnership oper-
ates as a Board of Cooperative
Educational Services offering
shared programs and services
to 22 component school dis-
tricts located in Genesee, Wyo-
ming, Livingston and Steuben
counties in New York state. The
Metal Trades Program is one
of the 16 vocational programs
offered at this center. This is
the ninth year of this project
which has raised over $250,
000 to benefit non-profits, and
charities based in the Genesee
Valley region.

planning its 53rd Annual Dog-
wood Festival (May 13 to 19),
the longest running such event
in the area. Begun as a two day
weekend celebration, the Festi-
val quickly grew to seven days

cal residents and visitors enjoy

Chalk Walk & Arts Fest Set for August 3

Chalk Walk & ArtsFest is
Dansville ArtWorks’ signature

eighth annual Chalk Walk is
scheduled for Saturday, Au-
gust 3, starting at 10am. Held
on Main Street in the heart of
Dansville’s historic business
district, the event runs rain or
shine and is free and open to

Fun for All Ages at the Toy & Game Exhibit

Enjoy the toys, games, and
puzzles that entertained all
ages in the 1800s and 1900s
during Dansville Area Histori-
cal Society’s Toy and Game
Exhibit.
Centerpiece of the exhibit is
the four foot by five foot doll-
house which is a miniature rep-
lica of Connie Banker Kane’s
childhood home on Route 63 in
Groveland Station. “The min-
iature house was designed and
built for Connie by Bob Hol-
brook in 1981,” according to
exhibit curator Nancy Helfrich.
“Connie passed away this past
year, and her family generously
donated the miniature house.
You can view photos of the
brick and mortar house which
still stands today. The min-
iature on display is accurate
down to the chimney bricks,
porch columns, and clapboard
siding. You can use little
flashlights to see inside the
17 rooms of Connie’s house.
The rooms are decorated with
period furniture, some of it
handmade by Ken Holbrook of
Dansville, Bob’s son. We were
very fortunate to be assisted
by Jeanne Miller who helped
repair and update some items
in the house. She also made a
printed “I Spy” game that all
ages will enjoy as they circle
items they spy in the house.”

Who Are the Dansville Lions & What Do They Do?
The Dansville Lions Club
is composed of forty men and
women from the community
who have joined together for a
common cause – to aid those in
need. They are volunteers who
gather together under an inter-
national organization where
they enjoy good fellowship,
enlightening programs at their
dinner meetings, the opportu-
nity to develop their leadership
capabilities, but more impor-
tantly, they dedicate part of
their free time to helping those
in need all over the world while
helping to make Dansville a
better place in which to live.

What do you usually do on
Monday evenings from mid-
June to just before Labor Day?
Beginning in 2001, the Village
of Dansville, under Mayor Bar-
ry Haywood, began its annual
summer-concerts series in the
gazebo, corner of Red Jacket
and Washington Streets. Are
you aware of these free con-
certs?
Now sponsored by the Dan-
sville public library, the con-
certs present different acts each
Monday. “We try to present ev-
ery kind of music imaginable
to reach the widest possible au-
dience,” says Allan Howe, the
volunteer concerts organizer.
Over the 11 weeks of the con-
certs there are at least 12 dif-
ferent acts. Do you like country
music? Blues? Folk? Barber-
shop? Steel-drum bands? Big
bands? Bluegrass? Brass en-
sembles? Classic rock? Cajun/
Zydeco? Irish? These are just a
few of the types of performanc-
es that have been presented in
been involved in this program.
It is impossible to count the
number of eye glasses, eye ex-
aminations, guide dogs, Braille
writers, glaucoma clinics and
other sight activities that have
routinely been completed
through the years. Lions from
around the world have accept-
ed the challenge to eliminate
the threat of blindness and the
local club is actively doing its
part. The Dansville Lions are
everywhere, either working on
their projects or helping other
organizations within the com-
munity on bettering our area.
A complete list of service proj-
ects can never be made and, in
fact, should not be since the
club’s goal is service, not re-
ward. But to list some gives an
the years since the series’ in-
ception.
Attendees are encouraged to
bring food, drink and picnic at
the concert site, as well as blan-
kets or chairs upon which to sit.
Some people even listen from
the comfort of their own vehi-
cles, running air-conditioning
or heat, as weather dictates.
“We don’t book the same
groups from year to year, and
we try to bring never-before-
appeared-here acts every sum-
mer,” says Howe. These are
from all over New York State,
and occasionally we’ve had

indication of the wide diversity
of interest in the community
and a willingness to help wher-
ever needed. These projects
represent untold hours of vol-
unteer work and thousands of
dollars gained by fund-raising
activities which is then dis-
tributed locally, to the area or
around the world. The Lions
purchased the first ambulance
for the village, purchased the
“Jaws of Life” for the fire de-
partment, constructed the pic-
nic gazebo in Babcock Park,
aided in the design and con-
struction of the nature trail in
Babcock Park and constructed
numerous handicapped ramps
at various private residences.
The club continues to contrib-
ute to Noyes Memorial Hos-
groups from Ohio, Virginia,
and Pennsylvania.
In June and July concerts run
from 7-8:30. In August, since
it gets dark and cooler earlier,
concerts are 6:30-8:00.
Concerts are never canceled;
on nights when severe weather
threatens (or even attacks), the
concert site is moved to the
firemen’s pavilion at Babcock
Park, off Morey Avenue.

Come Explore the Fairy Doors of Dansville

The village of Dansville has
become a popular place for lit-
tle fairies to settle, and signs of
the fairies and other wee folk
abound! “The Fairy Doors of
Dansville” is a unique walking
trail of whimsical little doors
located in the village of Dan-
sville, NY since May of 2017.
Over the course of the past two
years they have delighted hun-
dreds of visitors of all ages and
from several different states!
Each door is a unique work of
folk art created by one of our
door-makers. This is a free,
handicapped accessible activ-
ity, with Discovery Maps cur-
rently available at any of the
23 fairy door hosts. Most of
the doors are located inside
and may be visible from the
front windows, while some
can only be seen by venturing
inside. Signs of fairies, elves,
and gnomes can also be seen at
Pioneer Park near the Histori-
cal Museum. On your quest to
find the doors, you can imagine
who might be residing behind
them, or stop by Tony’s Piz-
zeria to write a tiny postcard to
Daisy the Fairy who resides at
Dansville ArtWorks. Children
can receive a small prize from
the friendly folks at Dansville
ArtWorks, Dansville Public Li-
brary or the Dogwood Trading
Company.
Free craft activities for chil-
dren will be offered at Dans-
ville ArtWorks and the Dog-
wood Trading Company from
12:30 to 2 pm on 5/18 during
the Dogwood Festival. Also
be sure to mark your calendars
for the “Fairy Fest” on July 5th,
part of the Dansville Cham-
ber’s “First Friday” events that
take place throughout the year.
