History Walmart began its retail operations in China in 1996 with the opening of a supercenter
and Sam’s Club in Shenzhen. Walmart's Global Procurement Office opened in February
2002. In February 2007, Walmart purchased a 35 percent interest in Trust-Mart.
Walmart China currently serves more than 7 million customers weekly in 87 cities.

Awards Walmart China has received numerous awards and recognition for the company’s
business practices including:
• One of the first companies for the “Direct Farm” pilot program by MOFCOM
• 2009 Business Week Greener China Business Award by Business Week Magazine
• China Green Bench Mark Company 2008 by China Entrepreneur Club

Opportunity At Walmart China, opportunity means continuous engagement with customers, suppliers,
our associates and the communities where we operate. This is a long-term strategy for
our business in China, including delivering real value to our customers, building and
keeping mutually-beneficial partnerships with our suppliers, and providing our associates
with development and career opportunities.

Community At Walmart China, we are contributing to a harmonious society and community. Walmart
actively participates in community service and charity events and has donated funds and
in-kind support worth more than RMB 59 million (USD $8 million) to local communities
over the past 13 years. Walmart China associates also contributed 180,000 working
hours through community events. Helping communities is what we do every day. And
when a crisis strikes, this becomes an even greater priority. Initiatives in 2009 include:

• In November, Walmart donated USD $100,000 to the Children’s Recovery Centre at


QingChengshan Emotional Healing for Children Traumatized by the Sichuan
earthquake. This project aims at helping the children who were affected by the
earthquake by providing a nurturing and safe environment, so they can engage in
developmentally appropriate activities.

• In November, Walmart China held various CSR events nationwide to celebrate


Thanksgiving Day with its customers. All the events covered different themes
including food safety, fire drill, support education, caring older people and disaster

relief. More than 10,000 customers got involved in this CSR program.

• To achieve development which is socially and environmentally sustainable, Harmony


Foundation and its partners are responding with training China’s most important
urban decision-makers. On Nov. 9 - 10, approximately 50 mayors from across China
participated in the training program on sustainable community development. Walmart
China announced its partnership with this program through financial support.

• In August, Walmart China celebrated its 13 anniversary in China with the theme of
thanks to customers for their support to Walmart. The anniversary celebration events
in August consisted of more than 70 events in over 60 cities throughout China.
Through these events, Walmart China highlighted the good neighbor relationships
with customers, communities, government and NGOs.

• In July, Walmart announced that it has become a Pavilion Partner of the USA
National Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo 2010. The announcement was made
at Walmart’s flagship high efficiency store in Beijing with the participation and support
of U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, who was on his first visit to China since
being appointed by President Obama.

• In April, Walmart China launched its third community service week nationwide
"Keeping the Traditional Virtues - Walmart Filial Piety Activity" by carrying out the filial
piety community service activity for one week. The service week kick-off ceremonies
were held in Walmart stores located in Shenzhen, Dalian, Chongqing, Xiamen,
Beijing and other cities concurrently. Walmart China has successfully organized the
annual event since 2007.

• In February, Walmart China committed 300,000 RMB to the China children and
Teenagers Foundation for the surgery rooms’ establishment of Sichuan disabled
teenagers’ recovery.

Sustainability Walmart China continues to focus on building awareness, community involvement, in-
store initiatives and supplier management. Initiatives in 2009 include:

• On Oct. 29, Walmart China held its first Direct Farm Forum in Beijing. During the
forum, Walmart China signed two Memoranda of Understanding with Ministry of
Commerce and Ministry of Agriculture and announced the launch of three initiatives
that support the Direct Farm program.

• On Oct. 28, Walmart China and ACCA21, a public institution under the direct
administration of China’s Ministry of Science and Technology, signed a Memorandum
of Understanding regarding a “Sustainability Contest,” The two sides agreed to have
solid cooperation in the areas of sustainable development. By launching the
“Walmart Cup” Youth Technological Innovation Competition, they hope to increase
young people’s awareness of independent innovation, energy-saving and emission
reduction, and to encourage them to become active in technological innovation,
applying the potential innovation results to serve the sustainable development of the
retail industry.

• On Oct. 27, Walmart opened its second high energy efficiency store in China
following the Beijing Wangjing Store. The newly opened Sam’s Club incorporates a
series of energy-saving solutions that deliver 29 percent annual electricity savings.
With 6,700 LED bulbs as general lighting, it is the first store in Guangzhou that uses
LED for general lighting.

• On April 22, a Corporate Innovation and Sustainability Capacity Building training
program jointly hosted by Walmart and Agenda 21 was kicked off in the Walmart

• China Home Office. Approximately 200 managers and staff from several dozen
Walmart suppliers attended the three-day training on corporation innovation,
corporate social responsibility and energy efficiency. Walmart and ACCA21 signed a
Memorandum of Understanding during the Sustainability Summit last October to help
Chinese companies achieve sustainability. The conference is the first step in
implementing the MOU.

• In April, Walmart China celebrated global Earth Month by offering local customers
eco-friendly products with low prices, working with suppliers to promote more than
2,000 categories of sustainable products at its stores. Walmart China involved
suppliers, NGO, and customers in this green campaign by launching a series of
community activities related to the environment. Walmart and P&G partnered with
NGO China Green Foundation on "one million customers for a greener China"
campaign.

• On March 21, Walmart actively responded to the “Earth Hour” launched by the World
Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) with P&G and HP through a weeklong promotion of
"Earth Hour" in 245 Walmart stores across 74 cities nationwide. One-third of lighting
in Walmart stores nationwide and offices were turned off during the event.
