Question: What is the difference between Karma-yoga and Bhakti?

Bhakti Charu Swami: Suppose, a person is cooks food for himself, family
members want food so the person is making and after cooking the food
is offered to the Lord. The food was made for himself and after that
was offered to the Lord, so this is Karma Yoga. The person who cooks
only for the Lord not cooking for himself or any other person, only for
the Lord. When we do anything according to our own wish and we offer
the results to the Lord, that is Karma Yoga and when we do anything
only for the Lord not thinking about our good or bad, so that is Bhakti
Yoga. The more simpler understanding is that when we work according
to our will and we offer the results to the Lord – that is Karma Yoga.
When we do not act according to our will but we act according to the
instruction of Gurudev[spiritual master] – that is Bhakti Yoga.

Question: We can chant the name of the Lord without the beads also,
then why beads are used to chant the name of the Lord?

Bhakti Charu Swami: sankya purvaka nama gana natibhi. Sankya-

purvak – today someone has chanted one lakh holy name and
tomorrow not a single time, it is not like that. So for this to not happen,
beads should be used to chant sankya-purvak fixed number of rounds.
By this it becomes a standard to chant daily. This is one understanding.
Second understanding is that when we chant the name of the Lord we
should chant it attentively. So when beads are used the attentiveness is
there and if beads are not there then we chant Hare Krsna Hare Krsna
for 2 minutes and then the mind runs away. Neither the name comes
from our mouth nor does the mind remain there. If we have beads in
our hands then suddenly we remember that we should chant. So by
using beads we remember that the name of the Lord should be
chanted. If beads are not used then after two minutes the mind runs.
Neither the name come from our mouth nor comes from the mind and
the mind does not remain there.

Another thing is that – beads are made of Tulsi and Tulsi is very dear to
the Lord. So when we chant taking the shelter of Tulsi then the Lord
becomes very happy.

Question: Why after completing a round we reverse the direction of the

beads? Why we just do it in one direction?

Bhakti Charu Swami: These 108 beads….. Have you seen that after 108
beads, one bead come, Meru that is Radha and Krsna and the other 108
beads are 108 Gopis. In the center there is Krsna and in one row there
are 8 Gopis and in second row there are 100 Gopis. Overall we chant
taking the shelter of these 108 Gopis. In the center there is Krsna so He
should not be crossed or jumped over. That’s why we take holy name in
this way , in circle.
