Definition of Biodiesel

How is biodiesel made?

Biodiesel fuel is made from oils or fats, which
are both hydrocarbons, most commonly
soybean oil.
These hydrocarbons are filtered, then mixed
with an alcohol, which is usually methanol,
and a catalyst (sodium or potassium
hydroxide).
The major products of this reaction are the
biodiesel fuel, which is an ester, and glycerol,
which has commercial uses, such as in
cosmetics.
FAME = Fatty Acid Methyl Ester
• Biodiesel is an alternative fuel for
diesel engine.
History of Vegetable Oil Based
Fuels

 1900 - Rudolph Diesel debuted the first diesel engine running on

peanut oil at the World’s Exhibition in Paris
He likely used peanut oil at the request of the French Government, who
were interested in its use in their African colonies
 After Diesel’s mysterious death in 1913, development focused on the
use of petroleum- based fuels

The use of vegetable oils as engine fuels may seem

insignificant today but the such oils may become, in
the course of time, as important as petroleum and
the coal tar products of the present time.

Advantages of Biodiesel

Biodiesel is Environmentally Friendly.

Biodiesel has Economic Advantages.
No Engine Modifications Necessary.
Biodiesel can be Made at Home.
Biodiesel can be Made from Waste
Products.
Biodiesel Byproducts.
Biodiesel prolongs Engine Life.
Advantages
• Provides a domestic and renewable energy supply.

• Biodiesel can be use directly in CI engine with no

substantial modification of the engine.

• Blending of biodiesel with diesel fuel increases

engine efficiency.

• The higher flash point of biodiesel makes its

storage safer.

• Biodiesel degrades four times faster than diesel.

Bio diesel is environmental friendly.

It can help reduce dependency on foreign oil.

It helps to lubricate the engine itself, decreasing engine

wear.

It offers similar power to diesel fuel.

It is safer than conventional diesel.

It can be made from waste products.

It can be made at home easily.

Its storage for long period is not suitable for
engine operation.
It becomes gel in cold weather.
It has water content.
(Hygroscopic) It has higher (10%)
Nox emissions. It decreases
horsepower. (25%)
