LECTURE 2
Problem nº1.
Assume a flash evaporator to which a liquid stream of two substances A and B is fed at pressure
higher than their bubble point, but which operates at a pressure lower than bubble point.
Suggest the equations relating the density of the steam generated with equipment operating
variables and parameters of the system assuming:
a) The ideal gas law is valid.
b) Van der Waals equation is valid.

Problem nº2.
A first order reaction A→B takes place in an isothermal perfectly stirred reactor which
discharges via an overflow. Francis formula that expresses volume flow discharged by an
overflow is:
QV =  ·( Z c )
1.5

where Zc is the height of liquid crest over the overflow

The cross-sectional area of the tank and the liquid density can be considered constant.
Develop a mathematical model to describe the evolution of Zc and cA to changes in flow rate
and concentration in feed (Qv0 and CA0)

Problem nº3.
Develop the mathematical model for the system shown in the figure. What are the state
variables for this system and what kind of balances are needed?
All flow rates are volumetric and the tank sections are A1, A2 and A3 respectively.
Volume flow Qv3 is constant and does not depend on h3, while all other effluent volumetric flow
rates are proportional to the hydrostatic pressures that cause the flow.

Problem nº4.
Considering the system of two stirred heaters described in the scheme, determine:
a) The system state variables.
b) The balances to be proposed.
c) Develop the necessary equations to describe the dynamic behaviour of the system.
d) How could express the fluxes of heat supplied by the heating systems in terms of other
variables?
The flow rates of the output currents of the heaters are assumed to be proportional to the static
pressure inside the same. Tank sections are A1 and A2 respectively and exchange areas of coils
are S1 and S2 respectively. No steam is produced in any one tank.

Problem nº 5.
Considering the system of two stirred water heaters described in the scheme, determine:
a) The system state variables.
b) The balances to be proposed.
c) Develop the necessary equations to describe the dynamic behaviour of the system.
The flow rates of the output currents of the heaters are assumed to be proportional to the static
pressure inside the same. Tank sections are A1 and A2 respectively and exchange areas of coils
are S1 and S2 respectively.
In the boiler 1, steam is injected directly into the water, and steam is generated in heater 2.

Problem nº6.
Develop the mathematical model for a RDTA in which the following reactions take place.
A1 → A2 → A3
A1 → A4
All reactions are endothermic and a first-order kinetics. The reaction mixture is heated by a
jacket which operates at 10 atm with steam at a flow rate of ms kg·min-1.

Problem nº7.
A mixing tank equipped with heating coil is used for combining two solutions of A and B (flow
Qv1 and Qv2) with different concentrations (CA1, CB1 and CA2 cB2) and to raise its temperature.
EQ1035/2019

Determine the equations governing the flow properties of the mixture.

Consider the output flow proportional to the square root of the level in the mixer tank and
operation temperature of steam-heated coil fixed (TS).
