GLOBALIZATION: A SNARE OR A SHIELD

ABSTRACT

“Globalization is not a monolithic force but an evolving set of consequences - some good, some bad
and some unintended. It is the new reality.”
-John B. Larson
The term ‘globalization’, first used in the mid of 1980s, is now a well-established theory of
anthropology. In a layman language globalization is the spreading of anything worldwide.
Broadly speaking, Globalization is the process of rapid integration of countries and happenings
through greater foreign trade and foreign investment. It is the process of international integration
arising from the interchange of world in different aspects such as views, products, ideas and other
strand of culture, making the world smaller and bringing human beings closer to one another.
We can experience globalization so profoundly these days, from diffusion of new ideas to
enhanced global networks, from shrinking time and distance to becoming a contributor to global
warming by providing an easy access to technology to replacing labour, from bringing a plethora
of new job opportunities to leading to an increase in competition, advancement in trade, imbibing
of new culture, globalization has its root everywhere.

Indian subcontinent has witnessed a rapid change in its economic, cultural, religious and social
settings, and in human developments as well as this very process has affected every aspect of an
individual’s life including lifestyle, religion, food, transport, language music and clothing,
location, education, income etc.Globalization presents various opportunities in different domains
but in its current form it presents more challenges than opportunities to the global societies. It's
hard to say whether the impact of globalization is totally positive or totally negative because it is
a mixture of both.

This dissertation will be dealing with impact of globalization in detail and suggest various
reforms, measures and need to bring about a sustainable globalization.
