1. SCOPE
“The object of the present Recommendation is to spec!
1 mothod for determining the absorption of hardened con-
crete by immarsion in water under vacuum.
2. DEFINITION
‘The absorption of water by immersion under vacuum of
hardened concrete is defined as the difference between
the mass of a given specimen of hardened concrete immer-
sed in water under vacuum and the mass of the same
specimen when dried, expressed in terms of the volume
of the dry specimen.
3. SPECIMENS
The specimen shall have a volume of not less than
(0.001 me
‘The volume and the st
‘such, that no point in
‘rom the surace.
It can be in the form of:
= a spocimen cast in accordance with the RILEM
Recommendation No. 3;
= an entire concrete unit;
= a specimen cut from hardened concrete.
4. APPARATUS
= ventilated oven controlled at 1054:5°C;
— scales eontitive to 0.05% of the mass of the speci-
men, both while in air and while being submerged in
water
vacuum tank or tanks, which permit to produce
vacuum to a residual absolute pressure of less than
100-250 N/m
5, METHOD.
5.1, Determination of the mass of the dry speci-
Dry the specimen to constant mass in a ventilated oven
at a temperature of 105:5°C (').
Determine the mass m, immediately after cooling the
specimen to 20:+3°C.
‘The state of constant mass of the dry specimen im is
assumed to be reached when the difference between two
weighings, 24 hours apart, is less than 0.1% of the mean
value of the two readings.
5.2. Determination of the mass of the specimen mz
immersed under vacuum
Place the specimen immediately after the mass. m
has been determined, ina vacuum tank in which the ait
pressure is then lowered to an absolute value not higher
than 100-250 N/m?. This. vacuum should be maintained
fora period of at least 24 hours,
Water is kept in a separate tank for at least 2 hours at
‘an absolute pressure of approximately the water vapour
Pressure at the given temperature (e. g. 1.9 kN/m? at
17°C, to 2.8kN/m? at 29°C), to allow dissolved air to
‘escape from water. Both tanks with their contents should
bbe kept at a temperature of 20:43°C.
‘After @ period of atleast 2 hours, the water is transferred
‘rom its intial tank into the tank in which the specimen is
placed. The amount of water which is transfered should
be sutficient to submerge the specimen, completely cover-
ing it with approximately 20 mm water. During the transfer
‘of water the pressure in both tanks should all the time be
‘maintained at an absolute value of approximately the water
‘vapour pressure at the given temperature.
‘As soon as the specimen is fully submerged, the vacuum
should be maintained for at least 2 hours before the
pressure is raised to the atmospheric value. The specimen
Js kopt in water until the mass mz is constant.
‘The constant mass m of tho wet specimen is assumed
to be reached when the difference betwoon two weigh-
ings, 24 hours apart, is les than 0.1% of the mean value
of the two readings.
‘The first measurement of the wet mass may take place
24 houre after the vacuum was abolished. Before each
‘woighing, dry the surface of the specimen, for example
