Why Teach? My Future as an Educator

A. Some people say “Those who can’t, teach” the real phrase should be “Those who can,

teach” because of the skill it takes to be a teacher. Most people think that a chemistry

teacher is someone who couldn’t become a chemist or an english teacher is someone who

failed as a writer but that is not always the case. To be a teacher requires far more

knowledge about a subject than a job that only has to deal with that one subject. Being a

teacher not only requires you to know the information well enough to teach it to other

people but to also understand the brain and how people come to understand information. I

disagree with this statement because being a teacher is a lot more than spitting facts to

people but to get them to engage themselves and be passionate about the subject. I would

tell someone that their view on teaching is inaccurate because like I said before a teacher

needs to know the subject so well that is it easy for them to teach other people about the

subject.

B. I am thinking about taking the path of early childhood education. I would find in interest

in teaching kindergarten or first grade the most. I wouldn’t mind doing second or maybe

even third grade but I don’t think I would want to go any older. I would like to have my

own classroom. I have come to this decision because I love little kids. I have so many

little cousins and it is amazing getting to watch them become smarter, more beautiful

people. I love not only getting to play with them but help them learn new things whether

it is about school or basic life things. I am told by many of my family members that I am

a role model to their kids and it pushes me to be a better person so that they will also be

better.

C. I did a job interview my sophomore year at Over The Rainbow which is a place that

provides daycare, preschool, and kindergarten. I had an absolute blast. I loved when it

was play time and I got to sit down and color with the children or do puzzles or build

with blocks. I read a book to the class during circle time and it felt so good that all the

kids were so into it and were asking me to read it again. They did chores which I think is

very important so the children learn life skills. All the children kept asking if they could

call me one of their teachers and we so sad to see me go at the end of the day. I just think

it would be awesome to go home every day knowing that I am making a difference in

someone’s life and they enjoy learning.

D. One of my main motivations to become a teacher is simply because I love children. I love

getting to see them grow up and go through everyday excited to find out something new.

I love that little kids are usually so happy and can have fun being themselves without the

fear of being judged. Another one of my motives is to be a good influence on someone’s

life. Every teacher I have had has shown m at least one thing that I should try to do to

become a better person. I believe it is important to not only teacher the student the criteria

for them to get an A but also teach them about life and how to be the best person they can

be. My last motive is to actually enjoy my job. I don’t want to wake up every day

dreading going to work and I don’t want to leave being happy it is over. I want to go and
Boudreau 3

enjoy my time there and wish I could stay longer. It is important to know why you want

to teach so you have a reason to go to work and look forward to it.

E. One of my biggest influences in my life has been my mom. She has always been there for

me no matter what. She always tries to make me happy when I’m sad and always tries to

bring out the best in me. She expects a lot out of me so it makes me push myself to

become a better person so she can be proud of me. My mom does not have a career in

teaching but every day she teaches me life lessons and important things that I will always

hold onto. When I am a teacher I want to be a role model for my students and pass on the

lessons my mom had taught me.

F. I like the teachers who have a calm and soft voice instead of a voice where they sound

angry all the time. I don’t like teachers who are too strict and make class only about

learning the criteria. I enjoyed my english teacher last year because he started every class

by asking us if we have any questions, not just school related, but anything to do with

life. He tried to get us to understand what it means to be a human being all year and

taught us how to be better people in the world. I believe it is important to teach your

students things they can remember forever and carry with them throughout life. It is

important to remain calm with your students and not get frustrated when they don’t

understand but instead just help them so they do understand.

G. In order to be a teacher you have to be very patient with your students. It is important to

always have a positive attitude so that the kids will also have a positive attitude so the

workplace is upbeat and fun. You have to want to be excited to go to work and be ready

to make a difference in someone’s life. I believe I can be a teacher because I love to help

people and I want to make a difference to help set up a child for what life brings them.

My strengths are that I can learn visually and kinesthetically so I will know that I am not

only providing my students with one way to learn. One of my weaknesses is learning by

listening so I would have to work on that so I can work with my students who are better

at listening than seeing or doing. I like working by myself or working with others so I

will be able to give my students a variety of ways to do an assignment. I know how it

feels to not understand one way of learning and not another so I will be able to do many

ways of teaching that I find work best for my class. I think I need to work on becoming

less shy in front of people my age or older. I am usually less shy when it comes to

younger people or people I know but I know that I will have to talk in meetings with

other teachers and things like that so it is something I can work on.

H. I am using the resource of my family and teachers. My mom is really there for me and

she is trying to help me find a good college and where I might want to live to see if it is a

good school district that I could potentially teach at and if it would be a good school if I

have children in the future. My mom has also been helping me create a resume for when I

apply at jobs. My step sister’s sister also works at a school so I did a job shadow there

and was offered a job to help out. One of my teachers offered to give me advice on how

to become a teacher and how she did it. I am also using the community by going out and

looking for a job in childcare that would work around my hours. I would only be able to

work after school in the spring which it hard because most schools want help all year not

for just one season. I think it would be useful for me to start using material resources such

as money. I should start putting aside money now to send me to a good school where I

can get a degree in teaching.

I. I have talked to my mom about teaching. She tells me how I need to enjoy my job so I

should only do it if I know I will enjoy it. My mom always tells me not to do a job

because of the money but to do it because I enjoy it. I have also talked to my dad about it

and his view is the opposite. He tries to tell me that I should get a job where I get paid

more. My mom and I always tells him that I shouldn’t dread going to work everyday. I

hope one day his view changed.

J. The first part of the InTASC standard relates to what we have been learning because it is

talking about the influence a teacher has on others. We have learned that teachers are

huge role models in a student’s life because they are someone who knows what it going

on and has already been through what the student is going through now. If a teacher’s

actions are not helpful to a student then the student will remember that and it will affect

their life forever. The second part of the InTASC standard explains how teachers are

always willing to grow professionally. Teachers are never done learning because there is

all different kinds of students that the teacher has and they can learn from each other. If

the student is better learning visually and the teacher is not then the teacher will learn

how to be a better visual learner for the sake of the student.

K. I have discovered that most teachers teach in the way that they learn best and I do not

want to be that type of teacher. I want to be able to teach in all different ways that can

benefit all of my student and not just the ones like me. My smart goal is going to be to

study in all different kinds of ways( visually, auditory, hands on) so that I will be more

even on my best way of learning. My time frame is to start doing this right away and to

do it as often as I can which will be easy during the school year since there is so much to

study. This is realistic because it is not like it is impossible to learn in different ways it
Boudreau 6

just might be hard at first but over time it will become more easy. Which is why if I start

doing this now then by the time I am a teacher I will be good at all types of learning.

L. My concern about teaching is that some teachers don’t try to connect with their student.

Some teachers clock in in the morning, give lectures and hand out assignments, then

clock out. I want to be the type of teacher that my students feel comfortable around and

they want to talk to me able life. How do we help students discover their passions? How

do people decide the curriculum? What makes a person educated?
