HOW TO AVOID HOAX WITH MEDIA LITERACY

1. INTRODUCTIONq

The presence of technology in everyday life gives a various impact on the society.

The presence of social media in human life, prompting the occurrence of social change

followed by the mindset of behaviour of the citizen become a netizen. Michelle Chmielewski

mentioned social media is a media that talk about what people do and say together about one

of a world and exchanged to the whole world, or the media that can communicate something

at the same time to all directions because of the digital technology support. Nowadays,

internet can be accessed by anyone, whenever, and wherever they are. Can be observed in our

environment many things have changed, from the way to communicate, looking for

information, to look for entertainment. The problem that occurs in the use of social media

often due to the abuse of social media especially “HOAX”. With the technology, every kind

of information can be accepted easily. So, it can give the impact to society with a lifestyle,

viewpoints, and cultures that can change quickly.

2. SUPPORTING PARAGRAPH 1
The development of social media that are not matched with the media literacy leads to

the false news or we can call it HOAX being rampant in Indonesia. Many misleading

informations circulate through several of media, including the online site or chat message.

Because of the news is not necessarily accepted by society, each person is capable of filtering

which news to be shared and the news that should be kept (Bruggs and Burke, 2006). Based

on (MacDougall,1972) “hoax is a deliberately concocted untruth made to masquerade as

truth.”. Nowadays, hoax news stormed increasingly on the internet. It can be seen from the

survey about National Hoax Epidemic (Wabah Hoax Nasional), that the spreader hoax news

the three highest derived from the social media in the form of Facebook at the highest ranking
92,40%, chat application 62,80%, and website 34,90% (Mastel, 2017). One of the ways to

overcome hoax is the media literacy that matched with the development of social media.

3. SUPPORTING PARAGRAPH 2

By the existence of media literacy, the user or society can gain the information easily

(Adiputra, 2008). Because the more times developed, the more technology changed.

Therefore, it is needed the ability to balance those developments with the media literacy.

Media literacy is a set of competence that is needed in the process of accessing, analyzing,

evaluating, and creating the message in the various forms (Mazdalifah, 2011). By having the

media literacy ability, someone is able to control and choose which information that

appropriate to be consumed.

4. CONCLUSION

The appearance of the media literacy campaign is one of the proofs of society concern

toward the bad impact of internet media. Media literacy is used as an instructional model

based on exploration so that each individual can respond what they see, hear, and read more

critically and can recognize the characteristic of hoax news, and the news recipient can

access, analyze, evaluate, in the process of fetching the meaning of a news. The society is

needed to be equipped with the knowledge of the internet and media literacy.
