FOREWORD

The purpose of this project is to provide to students of the English language,

especially at college level, a booklet, where they can study and practice the
four skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Truly all the students can study this booklet personally. Going to classes will
only mean the checkup (correction, reinforcement, or expansion) of the
exercises that are given especially by the instructor or English teacher.

This project is for the community of the Technical University of Babahoyo,

especially its Languages Center (CENID).

THE WEDDING GOWN

My name is Debra Cohen and I live in Raanana. My fiancé, Aaron, and I are
getting married on June 14th, 2008. We have just 6 months to plan our
wedding. It isn't much time, but Aaron is going to take care of the wedding hall
and our parents are gonna help with the invitations. My main concern is how I
will look on the most important day of my life.

While looking through ads for wedding gowns in the “Bridal Monthly”
magazine, I saw a beautiful dress advertised by “The Bridal Chalet” salon. The
ad explained that the gown was made from the highest quality fabric and the
decorations were hand-made. I am a busy person, so what really interested
me was that all dress fittings could be done at the client’s house for an extra
NIS 300. And then, if the client is not totally satisfied with the original gown,
changes can be made to it at no extra cost.

I am going to answer this ad by writing a letter to “The Bridal Chalet” to

verify all the details and make an appointment to visit the salon.

gowns? If not, what is she going to do?

2.4 Grammar

Future Going to

When we want to indicate the purpose or the intention to realize any future
action, it is preferable to use the phrase BE GOING TO, instead of the simple
future with WILL.

BE GOING TO goes followed by the verb in action.

Examples:

David is going to travel to China next semester.

We are going to spend the vacations in Miami.

If you want to employ the verb TO GO with GOING TO, that means GOING
TO GO, it is preferable to omit the infinitive to avoid redundancy.

Example:

I am going (to go) to Brazil tonight.

Also, the phrase GOING TO is used in the past (was going to, were going to)
to express an action that was intended to take place, but it was not done.

Example:

He was going to warn you, but it was too late.

Complete the following conversation using Future going to of the verbs

in parenthesis.

Henry: ………………………………..….. (do) anything special for your father?

Angeline: Yes. We………………………………… (go) to Galapagos´ islands.

Henry: Oh yeah! Who……………………………….(you/go) it with?

Angeline: With my family and some friends. We ……………………… (see)

the turtles, and exotic animals over there.

Henry: Sounds a lot of fun! How many

days……………………………………………….(you/stay)?

29
Angeline: Oh, just three days.

Henry: That´s great. Hope you guys enjoy a lot.

Angeline: Thanks Henry.

Henry: Don´t mention it.

Practice the following conversation with your partner.

Mark: Hey, Debbie. How are you doing?

Debbie: Great! Did you hear the news about Ed and Lynn?

Mark: No. What about them?

Debbie: They´re getting married.

Mark: No kidding. I just saw them, and they didn´t tell me about it.

Debbie: Well, they are, and I am having a party for them next week. Can you
come?

Mark: Sure!

Read about Tim and his plans for the future, and answer the questions.

When I grow up I'm going to be a tennis player - a really good one. I play
three times a week after school. But I'm going to train very hard, every day,
so I can be really, really good. Roger Federer is my favourite player.
First I'm going to play in the Wimbledon Juniors, and then I'm going to win all
four Grand Slams. I'm going to travel all over the world and I'm going to be

32
famous.
I'm not going to marry until I'm very old - about 25. Then I want to have two
sons. I'm going to play tennis until I'm 40 - that's a very long time. And I'm
going to teach my sons to play. I want them to be famous tennis players, too!

2.7 Grammar

Present Progressive with Future meaning

We use the present continuous with definite plans for near future. We do not
use the present continuous if there is no plan.

Examples:

My grandmother is moving into a retirement home on Friday.

33

2.10 Reading

Read the following article about robots. What do you think? Will robots
replace humans?

Robots

When will we have robots? We already have many kinds of

robots! Industries use a variety of robots and now robots are becoming more
common in the home.

The Husqvarna company makes a lawn mowing robot called the Auto
Mower. The robot has sensors that detect where objects are in the yard and
it maneuvers around them. The robot can cut the grass while you relax on
the patio with a glass of lemonade! Also, Eureka now makes a robotic
vacuum cleaner. Like the robot lawn mower, the vacuum cleaner
automatically detects where the furniture is
and vacuums around it.

Cars are becoming robots now that many

cars have GPS (Global Positioning Systems)
on them. A car with a GPS system can give
you directions on how to go somewhere, tell
you where the closest gas station is, and,
some day in the future, will drive itself. You
will take a nap or read while the car drives
itself to your destination.

We even have robotic pets now. The Sony

company makes a robotic dog named Aibo
that can sit, stand, and walk like a regular dog but can also communicate and
take pictures! Aibo understands certain commands, like a dog does, such as
"Sit down", "Stand up", "Turn right", etc. If you ask Aibo a question such as
"How old are you?", its eyes will flash the number of years old it is. Aibo is
also a great guard dog. He can patrol the yard and take pictures with a built
in camera of anything suspicious.

Select "True" or "False" to answer each question.

1. We have many kinds of robots now.

2. The Auto Mower is a robot that vacuums.

Samuel, 27
I think a lot of things will change in
2050. India will overtake China as
the first largest economy in the
world, but the country will have
many problems with its
demographics. The world will also
have a lot of problems with the
pollution and the climate changing. We will need to find other
resources, because there will be more than nine billion people on
Earth in 2050. We will also need to build spaceships to travel to
the Moon and to Mars, because we will have to take resources
from these places.
Lea, 25
Our world won’t be the same in 2050. We
will improve our technology and everybody
will be able to speak at least five languages.
People will live longer and we won’t have
health problems, because we will improve
our knowledge on medicine. We will also
live in peace and the different countries
won’t have nuclear weapons anymore. We
will also have a single world government as we already have the
IMF (International Monetary Fund). I think 2050 will be a great
year for mankind!

Steven, 29
I hope that the world countries will
be able to overcome the different

41
issues in 2050. We will live in peace and won’t have any wars
anymore. We will be able to explore the space and to find other
habitable planets. We will perhaps find other intelligent Beings on
other planets in 2050.

Read the text and guess the meaning from the words/phrases in bold. Then, check
the meaning with your instructor.

Mobile phones (cell phones in the US) are an important part of our lives nowadays. I
recently got a new mobile phone, so let me tell you about it.

Because I’ve been away from the UK for so long, I didn’t have an active mobile phone
number in this country so I decided to go out and get one this weekend. I went to the

54
phone shop and the assistant showed me a range of handsets. Some of them were free
when you signed up to certain service plans. Others you needed to pay for.
I already have a handset and I’m not sure which service provider has good coverage in
my area so I chose a pre-paidservice so I could see how well it worked before I signed
up. A monthly contract is a waste of money is there is poor reception at my house.
I put the SIM card in my phone and turned it on. The assistant helped me add
some credit and I was able to call and send text messages right away. Later in the day, I
set up mobile Internet so I could check my e-mails and tweets.
I am quite happy with the service so far, so next month I might sign up for a monthly
contract. It’s very convenient to pay the bill by direct debit and I won’t need to keep
getting top-up vouchers.
Many service providers give away really good phones when you use their service so I
might get myself an iPhone. A smartphone would be really useful for me and I could even
blog using it!

MEET THE APPLE WATCH

Figure 11: Apple Watch

Source: (MacWorld)

It’s called the Apple Watch, it looks like a luxurious synthesis of technology and traditional
timepiece craftsmanship, and it uses a “digital crown” to navigate through lists and zoom in on
data. Apple finally announced its long-awaited smartwatch on Tuesday, and, boom, just like that,
the center of gravity of the shaky wearables market has shifted in a seismic reset.
No, not because the watch looks that revolutionary. It’s because this is an Apple smartwatch. And
for better or worse, this is the new wearable’s most important feature.

The new Apple “this changes everything” device starts at $350, and will be available early next
year. But here’s the kicker for potential fence sitters: Apple Watch supports the new Apple Pay
system, so you can quickly purchase items from retailers ranging from Bloomingdales to Staples
with a flick of your wrist.

Apple Watch will come in three different models—from a baseline version to an ultra-luxe 18K gold
edition—and six different bands will allow a wide degree of personal customization. “Taptic”
feedback puts pressure on your wrist for iPhone notifications, and can even send signals to turn
left or right in the watch’s navigation app.

And, yes, this gadget requires an iPhone to work.

In many ways, the Apple Watch feature set looks like it was borrowed from other smartwatch
companies. Dig: The gadget tracks your steps and heart rate. It displays smartphone notifications.
But Apple’s message is that Apple Watch does all these things better than the competition. And
with its perfectly contoured edges, luxury materials, and nifty new UI, it’s got all the visual
trappings of another “God device” from Apple. That’s a potentially transcendent advantage that
could send competing wearable-tech manufacturers back to their drafting tables.

How Smoking Affects Your Health

There are no physical reasons to start smoking. The body

doesn't need tobacco the way it needs food, water, sleep, and
exercise. In fact, many of the chemicals in cigarettes, like
nicotine and cyanide, are actually poisons that can kill in high
enough doses.

The body is smart. It goes on the defense when it's being

poisoned. For this reason, many people find it takes several
tries to get started smoking: First-time smokers often feel pain
or burning in the throat and lungs, and some people feel sick or
Figure 14: Cemetery
even throw up the first few times they try tobacco.
Source: (BusyTeacher)
The consequences of this poisoning happen gradually. Over
the long term, smoking leads people to develop health problems like cancer,
emphysema (breakdown of lung tissue), organ damage, and heart disease. These
61
diseases limit a person's ability to be normally active — and can be fatal. Each time a
smoker lights up, that single cigarette takes about 5 to 20 minutes off the person's life.

Smokers not only develop wrinkles and yellow teeth, they also lose bone density, which
increases their risk of osteoporosis, a condition that causes older people to become
bent over and their bones to break more easily. Smokers also tend to be less active
than nonsmokers because smoking affects lungs.

Smoking can also cause fertility problems and can impact sexual health in both men
and women. Girls who are on the pill or other hormone-based methods of birth control
(like the patch or the ring) increase their risk of serious health problems, such as heart
attacks, if they smoke.

The consequences of smoking may seem very far off, but long-term health problems
aren't the only hazard of smoking. Nicotine and the other toxins in cigarettes, cigars,
and pipes can affect a person's body quickly, which means that teen smokers
experience many of these problems:

Bad skin. Because smoking restricts blood vessels, it can prevent oxygen and nutrients
from getting to the skin — which is why smokers often appear pale and unhealthy. An
Italian study also linked smoking to an increased risk of getting a type of skin rash called
psoriasis.

Bad breath. Cigarettes leave smokers with a condition called halitosis, or persistent
bad breath.

Bad-smelling clothes and hair. The smell of stale smoke tends to linger — not just on
people's clothing, but on their hair, furniture, and cars. And it's often hard to get the
smell of smoke out.

Reduced athletic performance. People who smoke usually can't compete with
nonsmoking peers because the physical effects of smoking (like rapid heartbeat,
decreased circulation, and shortness of breath) impair sports performance.

Greater risk of injury and slower healing time. Smoking affects the body's ability to
produce collagen, so common sports injuries, such as damage to tendons and
ligaments, will heal more slowly in smokers than nonsmokers.

Increased risk of illness. Studies show that smokers get more colds, flu, bronchitis,
and pneumonia than nonsmokers. And people with certain health conditions, like
asthma, become more sick if they smoke (and often if they're just around people who
smoke). Because teens who smoke as a way to manage weight often light up instead of
eating, their bodies lack the nutrients they need to grow, develop, and fight off illness
properly.

LESSON 3

4.9 Reading

Humanity needs water, and every drop is precious. On March 22nd, World Water Day is a day
to celebrate water and make a difference for people who do not have the water they need.

Did you know that in the UK every person uses about 150 litres of water every day and most of
the water we use is to flush the toilet? Let’s take a minute to think about the water we use. The
human body is 60% water and we need to drink lots of water to be healthy. When we are thirsty
we just go to the kitchen and fill a glass with clean water. We also need water for cooking.
Imagine trying to cook pasta or rice without water! We have toilets in our houses and when we
want to brush our teeth or have a shower, we use the bathroom. We use water indirectly too.
Farmers, who produce the food we eat, use water to make the plants grow. When we turn on a
light or switch on a TV or a computer we use energy and we need water to produce this energy.

The truth is that we are lucky enough to have clean water whenever we want, but this is not the
case for many people around the world. Did you know that around 750 million people do not
have clean water to drink? That’s around 1 in 10 people in the world. And did you know that 2.5
billion people do not have clean toilets? That’s about 1 in 3 people in the world.

If we drink dirty water or we can’t wash our hands when we go to the toilet, we can catch
diseases from the bacteria and become ill. Every year over 500,000 children die from diarrhoea
from dirty water. That’s around 1,400 children every day! In Ghana, 80% of all diseases are
from dirty water, in Nigeria 70% of people don’t have toilets and in Nicaragua, 80% of people
don’t have clean drinking water. Also, in some countries children walk many kilometres every
day to get water and sometimes the water isn’t even clean! If children walk many hours a day to
get water, they can’t go to school so they don’t learn how to read or write and don’t get an
education.

75
In 1993 the United Nations decided that March 22nd is the World Day for Water. On this day
every year, countries around the world hold events to educate people about the problems of
dirty water and that clean water is something that everyone should have around the
world. People organise events to raise money and this money helps countries like Nigeria or
Nicaragua get clean water to its people so that children don’t die from diarrhoea and so that
they can go to school.

For World Water Day, some people in the UK walk, run or cycle 10km, others climb mountains
or even jump from an aeroplane and skydive to the ground. At one school children between the
ages of 10 and 15 walk 6km with 6 litres of water so they can see how it feels to walk a long
distance carrying heavy bottles of water. People give them money to do these things and all the
money helps get clean water to as many people as possible around the world.

Read the text about World Water Day and do the exercises to check your understanding.

a) grow food. b) can’t wash their hands. c) cook. d) make energy. e) can’t go to
school.

5.2 Grammar

Present Perfect

The present perfect is composed of the verb to have as an auxiliar verb plus

the passive participle of the main verb.

I, you, we, they have seen He, she, it has seen

Notice that all the regular verbs have the same form in the passive participle
that the past siemple: walked, talked, worked, etc.

This does not happen with irregular verbs like: see, saw, seen; break, broke,
broken.

The present Perfect is used to indicate an ocurred action in an indetermined

time in the past, putting relief in the simple fact of having realized, without
specifying when that action took place.

Example:

I have been there.

I have seen that picture.

Notice that when the simple past is employed, we refer to a past action
without relation to the present, while with the present perfect, we refer to a
past action related with the present.

Also, the present perfect is used to indicate an action that starts in the past
and continues until the present.

Example:

Jerry has worked here since 1999.

My family have lived here for 20 years.

91
Complete with the Present perfect form of the verb in parenthesis.

1. (work) She………………….. in that office for many years.

5.4 Reading

Read the following article about a radio star that was saved by YouTube

and respond the questions below.

92
YouTube video saved the radio star

A homeless man who has lived on the

streets of Cleveland, USA for years, has
shot to fame, after a clip of his mellifluous
radio voice went viral on the Internet. Ted
Williams was filmed by a local cameraman,
holding a cardboard sign that read: “I’m an
ex-radio announcer who has fallen on hard
times”. Williams is seen in the video asking
for money in exchange for a quick blast of
his “God-given voice”. Now that the video
has had millions of hits on YouTube,
Williams, has become an overnight
sensation.

He has spent today appearing on talk shows across America, sporting

a new haircut and a smarter appearance than on the clip that made
him famous.

Since his story broke, he has received numerous job offers from big
broadcasting names including ESPN, MTV, ABC, CBS and CNN and
The Cleveland Cavaliers.

Williams has been on the streets for years and has struggled with
drug and alcohol addiction for years.

The story of the “homeless man with the golden pipes” has lifted the
spirits of a recession-hit nation in the week that it has returned to work
after the Christmas holidays. However, the instant hero has attracted
so much attention that reporters have started digging into his
background and they have discovered that Williams has struggled
with drug and alcohol addiction for years and has pressed the self-
destruct button previously in his life. Asked if the media storm around
him may cause him to relapse into addiction, he said, “I’m going to
meetings and I have called my sponsor.”

Accusations have also surfaced that Williams acted as a pimp during

93
his years on the streets. In response, Williams said, “Don’t judge a
book by its cover – everyone has their own little story. I’m just so
thankful. God has blessed me deeply. I’m getting a second chance.
Amazing.”
There are fears though that Williams will not be able to cope with his
new status as an instant hero. They say that he will be a flash in the
pan and his fairytale story is being used by the media to reinforce
American Dream propaganda, at a time when America is in serious
economic difficulties and the gap between the rich and poor is rapidly
increasing.
