Course objectives
• The course addresses dynamic systems – that is systems that evolve
with time. It is of interest to understand how the systems input affects
its output or what inputs should be fed to obtain a desired output.

Programs
1. Continuous and discrete signals and systems. Fourier analysis of continuous
time and discrete time signals. Laplace and Z transforms. Sampling and
reconstruction.
4. Feedback control. Proportional, integral and derivative controllers. Lead and
lag compensation. Synthesis of feedback controllers. Pole placement and state
feedback. State observers.
5. Event driven systems. Finite state automata. Analysis of discrete event
systems. Supervisory control.

Teaching methodologies
• Lectures: presentation of the course material, and
discussion of illustrative examples
• Labs/recitations: discussion of problems, use of MATLAB
based tools for problem solving, homework assignments
discussion
• Students will have weekly assignments that will be
discussed during practical classes. MATLAB based tools
will extensively used during classes. Evaluation will be
based on the homework assignments, a midterm test, and
a final exam.
Grading
• Homework assignments and involvement ~ 30%
• Mid term test ~ 30%
• Final exam ~ 40%
