Water supply - boosting
CHALLENGE
• Increase of pressurized water
demand due to high rising building
design approach

SOLUTION
• Booster sets with multistage • Complete range of FAT booster sets
pumps and VSD to meet the fully customizable
different water demands
keeping costant pressure • VSD integrated up to 22 kW (wall
mounted up to 500 kW)

• Horizontal or vertical execution

• Certification for potable water

Water supply – evolution in the
system design
The new requirements in pipe design for the high
rising buildings change the pump system:

• High pressure pumps

• Control and monitoring of the required flow

• Integration with other systems (like solar panels,

air conditioning units, water tanks, other pumps)

10
The largest multistage offering in the
market

• Small footprint

• High modularity

• Stainless steel construction

• Steep curves for better control

on pressure

Xylem technological advantage: use of standard component (motors and mechanical

seal) to reduce the LCC of the pump through the use of balanced impeller

Water pressure booster sets
• Constant speed or variable speed
• Single pump or multiple pumps in parallel
• Pressure reducing valves or check valves
• Safety and economy controls

• Maintain constant pressure in spite of:

» varying demand,
» varying suction pressure,
» variations in demand location

17
Sizing a booster set
Factors to consider:

• Building type

• Plumbing fixture type

• Friction losses in piping system and equipment

• Minimum suction pressure

Building type

• The building type has a great effect on

the load profile

• Designers use different methods to

estimate the total system demand

• Most of the cases the equipment is

oversized

«Petronas Twin Towers – Kuala Lumpur»

Sizing a booster set
Factors to consider:

• Building type

• Plumbing fixture type

• Friction losses in piping system and equipment

• Minimum suction pressure

• Different fixtures have different flow and pressure
requirements for proper operation.*
• Fixture flow and head requirements vary by
manufacturer.
• Usually determine the residual pressure required.

• * Engineer/Installer should check local plumbing

regulations for fixture flow requirements.
Sizing a booster set
Factors to consider:

• Building type

• Plumbing fixture type

• Friction losses in piping system and equipment

• Minimum suction pressure

Friction losses in piping system and
equipment

• As flow decreases,
friction losses in the
piping system also
decrease. Constant
speed pressure
boosters can’t take this
into account.
Sizing a booster set
Factors to consider:

• Building type

• Plumbing fixture type

• Friction losses in piping system and equipment

• Minimum suction pressure

Minimum suction pressure
• The minimum possible suction pressure at the package
should be used in determining the boost needed from
the pressure booster package.
• Sometimes, pressure boosters take suction from a tank
instead of a city main. Consider the lowest tank level.

1 pump vs. booster sets
Instead of one large pump:

1. Pump operates closer to high efficiency point

2. Small pump saves energy during low demand periods

3. Provides redundancy

Fixed speed vs. variable speed
With a VSD:

1. Pump operates at different flows with constant pressure

2. Water hammers avoided trough the use of soft start and soft stop

3. Increase of motor bearing life (up to 30%)

4. Decrease of the noise at partial load

End Suction vs. Split Case

How to select the right pump execution in HVAC applications?

End Suction Split Case

• Perfect solution for capacity up to 500 m3/h • Perfect solution for capacity over 500 m3/h
• Heavy duty bearing execution available for • No axial thrust: perfect balancing
tough applications • double mechanical seal arrangment
• Single mechanical seal arrangment • Installation must be very accurate with suction
• Easy installation (In line execution for more diffuser
space saving) • High robustness
• Meeting the highest ecodesing requirements
End Suction vs. Split Case

How to select the right pump execution in HVAC applications?

1. Required flow

2. LCC analysis

3. Space availability – installation conditions

4. Pumped media
Fixed speed vs. variable speed

• Heating and cooling systems needs different flows during the year

• Today it’s required to have different temperature in different rooms

• The use of large systems is becoming more common to increase the total
efficiency

• Requires communication capabilities with all the equipments installed in

the house
