DELPHOS — When
the United States Postal
Service closed its Lima Mail
Processing Center, Kristin
Briley suspected the prom-
ises being made at the time
were empty. She still feels
that way.
The administrative assis-
tant handles mail for K&M
Tire. She said the company
has a post office box because
mail can be received more
quickly by picking it up
than by waiting for delivery.
She said considerable time
is required to post payments
from clients. So, when mail
is late to the local post office
from the Toledo process-
ing center, it causes a ripple
effect.
“The sign in the post
office says they’re supposed
to be done putting mail in the
boxes by 10 a.m. but if it’s
late from Toledo, it may not
be done until after lunch. It’s
not an issue with the Delphos
Post Office; it’s an issue with
Toledo getting the mail to
Delphos when they’re sup-
posed to,” she said.
“They said they were tak-
ing Lima away and every-
thing was going to Toledo
but it would be a smooth
transition; they said there
would not be any issues but
there are major issues.”
Briley said her employer
also relies on the post office
for large quantities of outgo-
ing mail. That has also been a
challenge.
“We also send out bulk
mail and there was one check,
for example, that we mailed
from Delphos to a destination
in Delphos. It took 12 days
for the recipient to get it. So,
that’s obviously an issue, as
well,” she said.
Some residents may or
may not have also noticed
delays. An anonymous person
from the postal office said he
mailed a letter to himself and
it arrived the following day.
He said his impression of
the problem is that it is “hit
and miss” until the matter is
resolved.

mail is late but not by much.
“Our mail is late but only
by a couple of hours at most.
If it saves money, I can deal
with late. We have regular
business mail and we also
have residential. I haven’t
heard people complain a lot.
If things change, it takes a
while to get it ironed out,”
she said.
However, that change may
cost one local business an
additional $16,000 per year.

mail center in Lima. She will
no longer be able to do that
after January 1, 2011. The
company will also incur the
expense of driving mail the
extra distance to take it to
Toledo. That’s just one of the
issues.
“We always picked the
mail up at the post office at
8 a.m. but it’s not even there
until well after 9 a.m. So, we
have to call around 9:30 a.m.
to see when the mail will
be ready so we can go get
it. Sometimes, it isn’t ready
until 11 a.m. I’ve also had
a few of my mail customers
call in because they’re not
getting the paper the next day
like they always have. I have
customers in other states, like
Texas and Florida, who get
the paper and they’re getting
them in clumps of three or
four at a time. Basically, the
issue we’re having is that
it’s taking everything a long
time,” she said.
In some cases with next-
day shipping, timeliness is
guaranteed. A delay may
result in a refunded shipping
cost.

is in the middle of its plan
to minimize electricity con-
sumption at the Waste Water
Treatment Plant. According to
Waste Water Superintendent
Todd Teman, energy-saving
blowers were installed sev-
eral months ago. In addition,
the administration is looking
at erecting a wind turbine to
power the facility with clean,
renewable energy.
“The blowers were put in

as a fruit stand in maybe
the 1950’s and then later
turned into a steak house or
something similar. It’s been
around so long it’s hard to
say for sure.”
The Suevers are excited
to have some variety come
to Delphos restaurants.
“We’ve eaten at one of
their restaurants before
and they have really great
food, it’s very authen-
tic Mexican.” Craig
said. “They think they’ll
be able to open before
Christmas.”
“I think they’ll be really
good for Delphos,” Sandy
said. “And I think in this
business you need to be
young and energetic and
we’re getting old. So, it’s
good to have some new peo-
ple coming in.”
Though the time for
them to let go of The
Carriage Inn has come,
there are still some things
they will miss.
“The hard part is saying
goodbye to all the custom-
ers,” Sandy said. “We’ve
spent a lot of time there and
our kids practically grew up
there so the customers have
become part of the family.
It’s the same with the staff.
We’ve grown really close
with them.”
The sale was finalized
on Nov. 1. Cabo will honor
all gift certificates for The
Carriage Inn with a valid
expiration date through
December 2011.

mouth of Indonesia’s deadly
volcano today, forcing motor-

As rocks and ash rained
from the sky, soldiers helped
load thousands of frightened
villagers into trucks for a
second day, including those
seeking shelter in crowded
emergency shelters.
Merapi’s more than a
dozen powerful blasts and
thousands of volcanic trem-
ors and ash bursts since Oct.
26 temporarily shut nearby
airports and — in recent days
— closed air routes affected
by the ash.
With no winds early today,
white clouds shot a spectacu-
lar 20,000 feet (6,000 meters)
into the sky. Gusts later car-
ried the smoke westward,
with cities and towns up to
240 kilometers (150 miles)

“I have asked the air trans-
portation authorities to make
sure the ash isn’t affecting
visibility, “ said state volca-

more than 1 million people
in Haiti’s earthquake camps
have been walking a precari-
ous line: Trying to get out
and find good homes without
losing their tents and the pos-
sessions they still have.
Now a potential hurricane
threatens to upend that careful
balance. The Haitian govern-
ment has called for the vol-
untary evacuation of all the
quake zone’s camps ahead of
Friday’s expected arrival of
Tropical Storm Tomas, telling
residents to find somewhere
else to go.
“People said, ’We’ve been
displaced before. What’s going
to happen to us? Are we going

YouTube posting — a video
saying the victims were from
a tourist group kidnapped in
Acapulco a month ago.

the burial site in Tres Palos, a
town just south of the Pacific
resort city.
Police did not yet know if
the bodies found were from
the 20 men abducted at gun-
point Sept. 30 while visiting
Acapulco from neighboring
Michoacan state, Fernando

tion from the quake, prior
storms and the recent commit-
ment of government resources
to fight a growing cholera epi-
demic have left people with
few options as overtaxed aid
workers struggle to help.
“We are using radio sta-
tions to announce to people
that if they don’t have a place
to go, but they have friends
and families, they should move
into a place that is secure,” said
civil protection official Nadia
Lochard, who oversees the
department that includes the
capital, Port-au-Prince.
Fear and confusion have
swept through many of the
camps. Tensions boiled over
into scuffles Wednesday at
Corail when managers tried
to explain a planned volun-
tary evacuation of nearly 8,000
people from ShelterBox tents
once promised to be hurricane-
resistent.
The tentative plan there, as
at several other camps, is to
move some people to schools,
churches, and other structures
such as abandoned prisons. But
most of the homeless are being
told to seek out friends or fam-
ily who can take them in.
As news of Tomas’ pre-
dicted pass slowly filtered
through Port-au-Prince via
wind-up radios and megaphone
announcements, unease set in
among people who already
lost homes and loved ones in
the quake and saw their tents
ripped apart in lesser storms
appeared on Youtube in
which two men — their hands
apparently tied behind their
backs and answering ques-
tions from an unseen interro-
gator — say they killed “the
Michoacanos” and buried
them in the area.
The two bodies reported in
the tip were found wearing the
same clothes as the pair seen
in the video and were lying on
top of the mass grave.
A sign left between the
two men read: “The people
they killed are buried here.”
It was signed by Acapulco’s
Independent Cartel, or CIDA
— a little known drug gang
that has been claiming respon-
sibility for killings in the area
over the last two months.
Monreal said authorities
had not confirmed the identi-
ties of the bodies dumped on
top of the grave.
In the video, the two
men say they killed the
“Michoacanos” in an act of
revenge against La Familia, a
powerful drug cartel based in
Michoacan state.
The families of the 20
missing men, many of them
debris.
More than 75,000 are now
packed in crowded govern-
ment camps well away from
the base and, with no sign

tions,” Castro said.
Concerns are even greater in
the western reaches of Haiti’s
southern peninsula, where
heavy flooding is predicted.
Disaster officials have
extended a red alert, their high-
est storm warning, to all regions
of the country, as the storm is
expected to wind its way up
the west coast of the island of
Hispaniola, which Haiti shares
with the Dominican Republic,
through storm-vulnerable
Gonaives and Haiti’s second-
largest city, Cap-Haitien,

maximum sustained winds of
45 mph (75 kph) and was mov-
ing northwest at 6 mph (9 kph).

Ray J. Flore, 79, of Celina,
died Tuesday at Van Wert
County Hospital.
He was born Oct. 14, 1931,
in Mercer County, to Russish
and Eddythe (Webb) Flore.
On Sept. 2, 1967, he mar-
ried Patricia Wallen, who sur-
vives.
Other survivors include
brother Lester (Sharaleen)
Flore of Celina; and several
nieces, nephews and great-
nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death
by his brother Robert, broth-
er-in-law Dale Parker, sister
Helen Parker and sister-in-law
Dorothy Flore.
Mr. Flore was a United
States Army veteran who
served as a medic in the
Korean War. He was retired
from the West Ohio Gas
Company and was a Center
Township School graduate. He
was a member of Mount Zion
United Methodist Church in
Celina and the Mercer County
Sportsmans Club.

voters defeated about half the
214 school levies on ballots,
leaving some districts to con-

slashing bus routes, the Ohio
School Boards Association

show that 105 levies, or 49
percent, failed to get voter
approval.

porters of liberal social causes

rights were among those who
raised concerns Wednesday
about new GOP leadership in
the state.
The Ohio Civil Service
Employees Association said
its members worried about
the prospect of legislation that
would consolidate or privatize
state agencies, leaving state
workers without jobs and cut-
ting services they provide.
“We are concerned that
a new administration and
the new House would act in
haste in a way that negatively
impacts quality public ser-
vices,” union spokeswoman
Sally Meckling said. She said
one-party rule could leave
stakeholders, such as state
employees, out of the discus-
sion.
At his first news con-
ference as governor-elect,
Republican John Kasich said
he had no interest in picking
a fight with unions represent-
ing state employees. State
and local government work-
ers have been caught in the
crosshairs of a battle over
creating more jobs in a state
where unemployment is 10
percent.
“I never intend to be in
a position of declaring an
enemy,” he said.

hope to sit down with the
new leaders in the Legislature
to make sure the voices of
the middle class were heard
in the budget-making pro-

ment program will be safe
under his new administration
as he seeks ways to address
a looming budget gap that
could approach $8 billion.
Kasich, a 58-year-old for-
mer Republican congress-
man elected Tuesday to
replace Democratic Gov. Ted
Strickland, said “nothing will
be left off the table” as his he
crafts the two-year state bud-
get due out early next year.
But he stopped short of
threatening job cuts to union-
ized public employees before
getting even a first glimpse at
the latest budget figures.
“I’m not going to get into
trying to pick on anybody
right now,” Kasich said, not-
ing he wants a smooth transi-
tion into office and productive
budget negotiations.
“I’m very confident that
we’ll have a very good
reform-oriented budget that
will restore the tax cut,” he
told reporters invited in after
a meeting with his key advis-
ers.
In order to balance the
last state budget, Strickland
delayed for two years a
planned 4.3-percent cut to

for Equality Ohio said the gay
rights group is anxious about
what Tuesday’s outcome

tections regardless of sexual
orientation. The Rev. Michael
Castle said the organization
had hoped to move the bill
along while Democrats still
controlled the governor’s
office and the House.
“We, at this point in time,
are very cautious and con-
cerned about where this might
leave us in the next couple of
years,” Castle said.
Associated Press exit poll-
ing indicated that despite
the GOP sweep Ohio voters
remain closely divided.
The survey indicated vot-
ers didn’t view either party
more favorably than the other.

had an unfavorable opinion of

Obama signaled a new will-
ingness to yield to Republican
demands on tax cuts and jet-
tisoned a key energy prior-
ity on Wednesday, less than
24 hours after he and fellow
Democrats absorbed election
losses so severe he called
them a shellacking.
But he bluntly swept aside
any talk of repeal of his signa-
ture health care law — right
after the House Speaker-in-
waiting, Rep. John Boehner
of Ohio, vowed Republicans
would do everything they
could to wipe the legislation
off the books.
Boehner, a 60-year-old
veteran of two decades in
Congress, spoke at what
amounted to his national
debut as head of an incom-
ing conservative majority that
will include long-experienced
lawmakers and tea party-
backed political newcomers
alike. He declared, “Our new
majority will be the voice
of the American people as
they expressed it so clearly
yesterday.”

relations with Russia and
open the way for a new get-
tough approach with China.
The congressional shake-
up after Tuesday’s vote also
could bring better back-
ing for Obama’s policies in
Afghanistan. But it could
force the president to ease
demands that Israel make con-
cessions to the Palestinians
on settlement building in the
West Bank, a crucial issue in
stalled peace talks.
Secretary of State Hillary
Rodham Clinton has said
the election results will not
change the U.S. course abroad
because “politics stops” at the
nation’s borders. Republicans
and Democrats, she said, can
“build coalitions” and “find
allies on issues that are in
America’s interests.”
Despite her words, the dra-
matic shift in the American
political scene is bound to

Eugene Robinson suggested
in a recent column. “Take
back the country,” the popu-
lar tea party refrain, doesn’t
mean reclaim it from “the
black man.” It means reclaim
it from a rogue government.
There were so many clues,
even the clueless should have
seen what was coming.
In February 2009, Obama
had an approval rating of 76
percent. Let me repeat that: 76
percent!!! Few but God poll
better. Obviously, one can
only go downhill from there,
but you can’t pin the slide on
racism. All those people didn’t
suddenly realize their presi-
dent was African-American
and become racists.
Are there racists in
America? Sure. And some of
them show up at tea party ral-
lies. Say what you will about
the tea party, and there’s
plenty to say, but it is fun-
damentally unfair to say the
tea partiers are racist. It is
also just plain incorrect to
say that opposition to Obama
is anti-black. The election
was a referendum on policies
that are widely viewed as too
overreaching and, therefore,
ultimately, threatening to
individual freedom. It’s that
simple.
The essential question that
voters were answering was
whether government or the
private sector is better suited
to create jobs. This is a ques-
tion on which historians and

Taken together, the fast-
paced series of events con-
firmed the primacy of the
economy as an issue in a
country with 9.6 percent
unemployment, record home
foreclosures and disappoint-
ingly slow growth.
In purely political terms,
they also underscored a
dramatic overnight power
realignment after two years
of grinding partisanship
in Congress followed by a
coarse and costly campaign.
For all the uncertainty
they loosed, there was little
that was ambiguous about
the election results. House
Republicans picked up 60
seats to capture a majority
and led for five more, end-
ing a four-year span in which
Nancy Pelosi served as the
first female speaker in his-
tory.
The GOP picked up at
least six seats in the Senate
in races reflecting both the
peril and the potential of a tea
party movement that emerged
during the campaign. Tea
party favorites were elected
to Senate seats in Florida,
Kentucky and Utah, but they
lost in Nevada, Delaware and
Colorado — at a time when
Republican victories in all
three would have created a
50-50 tie.
Speaking to reporters in
the Capitol, Boehner said he

was the crux of Tuesday’s
election. At the risk of over-
simplifying, the midterm
bloodbath was a fight over
capitalism.
Whether candidates could
properly articulate market
arguments was less important
than whether they understood
that expanded government
means less individual free-
dom. You don’t need a doc-
torate in Keynesian theory to
get them apples.
Obama’s declining popu-
larity since his planet-realign-
ing ascendancy is easy enough
to graph. The dipping points
in his approval ratings cor-
respond to specific agenda
items, such as the stimulus
bill and health care reform.
Interspersed among those
major initiatives were red
flags the size of Chile.
In November 2009, New
Jersey and Virginia both
elected Republican gover-
nors — Chris Christie and
Bob McDonnell, respectively.
These two elections were ref-
erendums on Obama’s agen-
da, specifically tied to health
care. Then in January came
Republican Scott Brown
in Massachusetts, another

and fellow Republicans hope
the president “will continue
to be willing to work with us”
on the priorities of creating
jobs and cutting spending.
But, he added, “We’re
going to continue to renew
our efforts for a smaller, less
costly and more account-
able government here in
Washington, D.C.”
Obama struck similar
themes at his own news con-
ference a few hours later,
saying he was eager to sit
down with the leaders of both
political parties “and figure
out how we can move for-
ward together.” He added,
“It won’t be easy,” noting the
parties differ profoundly in
key areas.
Sounding more conciliato-
ry than in the past, the presi-
dent said he was open to com-
promise with Republicans on
their demand for an extension
of all of the Bush-era tax
cuts due to expire on Jan. 1,
including those that apply to
upper-income earners.
“My goal is to make sure
we don’t have a huge spike
in taxes for middle-class
families,” he said. He omit-
ted mention of his campaign-
long insistence that tax cuts
be permitted to expire on
upper-income families. The
issue produced pre-election
skirmishes in Congress and
frequent disagreement during
the campaign.

affirmative votes are needed
to ratify the treaty. Obama
may have a better chance in
the interim lame duck session
that begins Nov. 15.
Democratic state, thundering
into the Senate to fill the slot
left vacant by Ted Kennedy’s
death.
That’s narrative for you.
Yet somehow Democrats
couldn’t see it. They turned
a blind eye and did the very
thing Americans loathe: tele-
graphed disdain for the mis-
informed masses and insisted
that people would like what
their government was doing
for them once they understood
it. Translation: Shut up and
take your medicine.
It was less than reassur-
ing to hear House Speaker
Nancy Pelosi tell a gathering
of county officials: “We have
to pass the bill so that you can
find out what is in it.”
Instead of hearing the
people’s voices, Democrats
and the White House doubled
down and began to demon-
ize the opposition. It was
Rush Limbaugh’s fault. Fox
News was the problem. John
Boehner, today the presump-
tive speaker of the House,
became a target du jour. In
an echo of some of the tea
party’s worst moments, the
White House advanced the
them-versus-us mantra.
They’re the problem.
Except, alas, “they” were The
People. And their voices were
being ignored. For better or
worse, our system of gover-
nance doesn’t include a mon-
archy.
Obama didn’t need to be
a better communicator. He
needed to be a better listener.

While your coffee cake is baking, add ingredi-
ents to a slow cooker for a tasty evening meal.
Sour Cream Pumpkin Coffee Cake
½ cup butter
¾ cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 eggs
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon soda
1 cup sour cream
15-ounce can solid pumpkin
1 egg, slightly beaten
1/3 cup sugar
1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
Streusel
1 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
5 tablespoons butter
1 cup chopped nuts
Cream butter, ¾ cup sugar and vanilla
in mixer bowl. Add eggs, beating well.
Combine flour, baking powder and soda.
Add dry ingredients to butter mixture
alternately with sour cream. Set aside.
Combine pumpkin, beaten egg, 1/3 cup
sugar and pumpkin pie spice. Spoon half
of the batter into a greased 13 x 9-inch pan.
Spread to corners. Sprinkle half of streusel

ing streusel over top. Bake at 325 degrees
for 50-60 minutes or until done.
Slow Cooker Italian Chicken
2 pounds chicken (can put in slow
cooker frozen)
1 cup chicken broth
1 cup Italian dressing or Kraft Roasted
Red Pepper Italian with Parmesan
1 can cream of mushroom soup (can
use cream of chicken or cream of celery)
8 ounces cream cheese
1 pound pasta
Put chicken in slow cooker. Pour in
equal parts of chicken broth and Italian
dressing to cover the chicken, about 1 cup
of each. Pour the can of soup over every-
thing. Cook on low for 8 hours. About 30
minutes before you are ready to eat, turn
slow cooker to high. Take the chicken out
of the slow cooker to shred. Return the
chicken to the slow cooker and add cream
cheese. Boil and drain the pasta. Serve the
chicken mixture over the pasta. It is best
to mix them individually in bowls and
refrigerate any leftovers with the sauce
and pasta separate.

tain services for residential
customers either discon-
nected or threatened with
disconnection. According to
the “Winter Reconnection
Order,” customers can have
their service restored by
paying the amount owed
or $175, whichever is less,
plus a $36 reconnection fee.
This option is available on a
one-time basis.
For income-eligible
households (detailed below),
funds provided through
the Emergency Home
Energy Assistance Program
(E-HEAP) or other energy
assistance programs may be
used to pay the $175 charge.
Customers must enter a pay-

Academy had plenty of it
and it bedeviled St. John’s
all night long, enough for
a 2-0 victory in a Division
II regional semifinal at
Lexington High School.
“We knew coming in how
fast and quick Cuyahoga was.
They were extremely fast and
they applied a lot of pressure
on our defense,” St. John’s
coach John Munoz noted.
“They have great ball pos-
session skills and they really
had a lot of speed up the line;
they are so technically sound.
Plus, they used the wider
field to their advantage. It’s a
great test for us to play a team
like this; it’s a level to where
we’d like to get.”
The Lady Royals (15-2-
4) dominated the ball in the
first half, hardly giving the
Lady Blue Jays (16-3-2) any
chance to manufacture an
attack.
However, thanks to
some strong work between
the pipes by senior keeper
Samantha Stant (14 saves
versus 18 shots on-goal) and
her defense in front of her,
they could not dent the score-
board in the 40 minutes.
“We knew they liked to
take quick shots but Samantha
did a nice job of studying and
she was prepared,” Munoz
noted. “She made some great
saves tonight; she’s been
solid all season.”
In particular, sophomore
Christine Najjar was a thorn
in the side of the Blue Jay
defenders. She had numerous
opportunities in the first half
to score but five times she
was denied by Stant.
The best chance she had
was at 24:09 when Stant
turned her 14-yarder aside
with a diving stop.
At the 9:52 mark, Stant
needed a leaping save of
a 20-yarder by sophomore
Kimmie Orihel to keep the
scoreboard clean.
At 9:20, Stant denied a
laser from senior Sarah
Flennikne from 18 yards.
The Jays only had one scor-
ing chance in the first half by
junior Myriah Jackson late but
senior keeper Eleni Miller (4
saves vs. 6 shots) snuffed it out.
“We didn’t show any frus-
tration that I could see in the
first half. I just told the girls
at halftime to keep attacking
and the chances would come;
we’d score a goal,” Cuyahoga
coach Bob Adamov said. “We
really wanted to use the wide
field to our advantage. We
play and practice on a wide
field and this one is even
wider than we’re used to.

in the middle. We’d scouted
St. John’s Saturday and felt
they really liked to pack the
middle; we wanted to force
them to spread out.”
The Lady Royals contin-
ued to control things in the
second half, especially early
on.
They continued to press
forward and finally broke
through at the 36:33 mark.
Off an attack, junior Chelsea
Smith got an open look
from the left wing that was
deflected toward the middle
by Stant. Sophomore Natalie
Silk beat the defenders to
the ricochet and fired from
10 yards; Stant dove again
and tried to stop the shot but
couldn’t control the ball and
hit the back of the net for a
1-0 edge.
Stant stopped another shot
from freshman Katherine
Kouzelos at 32:49 but could
not stop the next foray. Off
a midfield field from Smith,
she found Orihel on a run
down the right side. She let
loose on a clean shot from
just outside the corner of the
box and went over the top;
the orb hit the inside of the
left post and into the net for
a 2-0 lead.
At the 26:05, Jays’ junior
forward Courtney Grothouse
and CVCA junior Nina Finelli
knocked heads and were fin-
ished for the match.
The Jays tried to retal-
iate from then on but the
Royals could sit back and
play defense.
Miller made three stops in
those last minuets: at 26:01,
when she denied senior Becca
Saine on a free kick from 25
yards; at 20:47, when Saine’s
1-touch from eight yards was
gathered by Miller; and 1:20,
when Saine was denied for
the third time.
“This was an awesome
season and an awesome run

the younger girls to reach
for,” Munoz observed. “The
seniors have made this a fun
team and helped lay a foun-
dation for the future. They
and the youngsters worked
hard and it was great to see
that effort pay off with this
season’s success. We played
an excellent team and I wish
them well the rest of the sea-
son.”
Six other seniors played
their final matches for Munoz:
Kaitlyn Schwieterman, Bailey
Calvelage, Emma Boggs,
Alicia Ankerman, Cassie
Schimmoeller and Sarah
Shrider.
At 5:50, Saine also tried
another free kick from just
outside the right wing of the
box but missed just over the
top.
Stant made three more
saves in the last 17 minutes to
keep the Jays in the match.
“On the first goal, Natalie
was in the right place at the
right time; she’s had about six
goals like that this,” Adamov
added. “Again, it came off
being aggressive. We’ve
been very good on restarts
and corner kicks the last three
matches. We had our chances
all match long.”
The end of the match was
made even more painful for
the Lady Jays when junior
Kristie Grothouse collapsed
on the sideline and eventu-
ally was taken to the hospital
for tests.
After the match, the play-
ers of the Royals (who will
take on the Wauseon-Ontario
winner at noon Saturday)
came over and prayed with
the Blue Jays’ players for
their fallen teammate.
“That put this match into
another perspective. The girls
appreciated what they did,”
Munoz added.
Eric Mangini to face off

BEREA — Once the
game’s over, Browns coach
Eric Mangini and Patriots
boss Bill Belichick will meet
somewhere near the 50-yard
line and face yet another of
those painfully awkward
moments with the whole
football world watching.
That’s when they’ll have
to shake hands.
Mangini already knows
what’s coming.
“I’m sure it will be one
that’s firm, brisk. You know,
textbook,” Mangini joked
Wednesday. “I’m sure we’ll
be talking about it for years
to come.”
The rocky relation-
ship between Mangini and
Belichick — former friends,
student and mentor — has
been one of the NFL’s spici-
est story lines for some
time. Their rift, precipitated
by Mangini’s departure in
2006 from Belichick’s staff
in New England to coach
in New York and deepened
by Mangini’s accusations
of cheating in the infamous
“Spygate” affair, has become
legendary — or laughable,
depending on your take.
On Sunday, their public
and personal feud will be
renewed when Mangini leads
the Browns (2-5) against
Belichick and the Patriots
(6-1). It will be their first
meeting since Mangini took
over as coach in Cleveland,
where he got his start in 1995
when Belichick plucked him
from the Browns’ public rela-
tions department and made
him a low-level assistant.
Mangini still speaks fond-
ly of Belichick.
On the other hand,
Belichick avoids anything
warm and fuzzy.
During a conference
call with Cleveland report-
ers, Belichick was asked at
least five questions about his
past, present and future with
Mangini. Each time the three-
time Super Bowl champion
coach turned the discussion
in another direction.

Mangini spent a decade
working under and alongside
Belichick. They were togeth-
er one season in Cleveland,
three in New York and six in
New England before Mangini
was hired by the Jets in ’06.
Those years shaped Mangini
into a tough-minded, no-non-
sense coach cut straight from
the Belichick hoodie.
In summarizing his “tre-
mendous influence,” Mangini
complimented Belichick’s
well-rounded knowledge,
work ethic and unmatched
attention to detail. He also
learned how to handle suc-
cess and adversity working
for Belichick.
“He’s arguably one of the
best, if not the best coach in
the league,” said Mangini,
who added his relation-
ship with Belichick has not
changed in four years.
So where did it all go
wrong?
Mangini’s decision to join
the Jets, New England’s bit-
ter AFC East rival, rankled
Belichick, who felt betrayed
by one of his coaching dis-
ciples.
Then, in ’07, Mangini
allegedly turned in Belichick
for having a Patriots aide
videotape Jets defensive sig-
nals in the season opener.
Belichick was eventually
fined $500,000 by the league
and the Patriots were penal-
ized $250,000 and had to for-
feit a first-round draft pick
because of the incident.
Things haven’t been the
same between the two since,
and their postgame meetings
have included some half-

he was very important to me
and I respect him. He was
very important to my family
and all those things, but we’ll
see. Time will tell. I think
everything takes care of itself
over time.”
Mangini, 2-5 in head-
to-head matchups against
Belichick, hasn’t shown
any outward signs that this
week’s game has more mean-
ing. A few of Cleveland’s
players have looked for cues
their coach might be more
eager than usual, but there’s
been no noticeable change in
Mangini.
“Not at all,” said Browns
linebacker David Bowens,
who spent two years with
Mangini in New York. “He
doesn’t show any emotion.
He hasn’t said anything in the
meetings. He’s pretty much
the same as he has been every
week, identifying some things
and keys we need to win the
game.
“But there’s no more
emphasis than there was last
week.”
Browns wide receiver
Chansi Stuckey said Mangini
doesn’t have to say anything
to convey that he wants to win
against the man who broke
him into coaching. If the
Steelers are the Browns’ big-
gest rival, well, the Patriots
are Mangini’s personal nem-
esis.
Stuckey, who played two
seasons for Mangini in New
York, remembers the Jets-
Patriots games as being filled
with hard hits and hatred.
“They are both very com-
petitive guys. They both want
to be the best,” he said. “It’s
common for one to want to
outdo the other. I know both
want to come in and pound
the other guy.”

Penske’s eyes 1st NASCAR title

TALLADEGA, Ala. —
For all his success in Indy-
style racing, it’s hard to
believe that Roger Penske
has never won a champion-
ship in NASCAR.
Brad Keselowski hopes to
change that at Texas Motor
Speedway this weekend.
Keselowski has a 485-
point lead in the Nationwide
series standings over his fre-
quent on-track sparring part-
ner, Carl Edwards, and can
clinch the title by finishing
21st or better.
Noting that the Penske
Racing shop has plenty of
photos on the walls of Penske
holding open-wheel champi-
onship trophies with vari-
ous star drivers, Keselowski
wants to give the auto indus-
try titan another moment
suitable for framing.
“It’s unbelievable that
there’s not one with him
holding a (NASCAR) cham-
pionship trophy,” Keselowski
said. “When I came to Penske
Racing, that’s what I wanted
to do. I wanted to win them a
championship. And it looks
pretty good.”
With the championship all
but clinched with three races
left in the season, Keselowski
says he can’t stop running
through worst-case scenar-
ios in his mind. What if he
stumbles as he gets out of his
rental car and breaks a leg?
“Don’t count your chick-
ens before they hatch,”
Keselowski said. “They’re
ready. There’s like a crack
in the egg. But they’re not
hatched yet.”
If Keselowski is being
extra careful as he steps out
of rental cars, he won’t take
the same approach when
he hits the track this week-
end. Aggressive driving
has become the 26-year-old
driver’s calling card, and he
won’t be aiming to just finish
21st on Saturday.
“You know me,”
Keselowski said. “I’m not
going to cruise, that’s for
sure.”
Keselowski’s teammate in
the Sprint Cup series, Kurt

like the Gibbs guys have the
overall owners championship
lead right now, where Brad’s
got the driver’s champion-
ship lead,” Busch said. “So
it would be a sad day — I
mean, it’s not going to be
sad, I hope Brad wins it,
I hope he wraps it up at
Texas next week — but we
still have to have him push
hard for Roger to get him his
championship.”
Winning a championship
would be a big step forward
for Keselowski, a talented
young driver best known for
his high-profile run-ins with
Edwards. For all his success
in Nationwide, Keselowski
has struggled on the Cup cir-
cuit this season, where he’s
25th in the points.
Cincinnati Bengals’
offense going nowhere

CINCINNATI — When
Carson Palmer, Chad
Ochocinco and Terrell Owens
get together for the NFL’s
weekly reality show, they’re
a collective dud on the most
important down.
The Cincinnati Bengals’
season is all but finished
because their talented passing
game and their once-depend-
able running game go side-
ways — back to the bench
— when it’s time to either
pick up a few more yards or
punt.
The Bengals are 2-5 head-
ing into their Monday night
game against the Pittsburgh
Steelers in large measure
because they can’t string first
downs together. Palmer is the
AFC’s lowest-rated passer on
third down, completing fewer
than half his throws.
Overall, the Bengals con-
vert only 37.3 percent of their
third down chances, which
ranks 20th in the league.
The most frustrating part:
No common thread among all
the third-down failures.
“Whatever the case may
be, they’re just tiny things
but when you can’t get over
that hump and can’t get that
next third down, everything
is magnified,” offensive
coordinator Bob Bratkowski
said Wednesday. “And it
keeps you from running your
offense.”
The last loss is the best
example of this often-lost
offense.
The Bengals got the
opening kickoff and went
86 yards in 15 plays against
the Dolphins, converting
all four of their third-down
plays in one of
the most impres-
sive drives of the
season. Palmer
threw a 7-yard
touchdown pass
to Owens on a
third-down play.
After that, the
Bengals convert-
ed only 2 of 12
third downs the rest of the
game. They went three-and-
out on five straight posses-
sions, feeling the boos that
accompanied each punt on
their way to a 22-14 loss.
“Particularly when you
haven’t converted two or
three in a row, then there’s
a little more pressure there
on that,” Bratkowski said.
“’C’mon, we’ve got to get
one,’ and that’s when people
start to press and get frustrat-
ed and force the issue, which
is not a good thing.”
A quite unexpected thing,
too.
The Bengals kept the
offense moving last season
by running the ball. The pass-
ing game finished 26th in the
league, prompting the deci-
sion to sign Owens and draft
tight end Jermaine Gresham
and slot receiver Jordan
Shipley. The passing game
is much better, ranking sixth
in the league. But the running
game is down, third downs
have become a nightmare,
and the defending AFC North
champs are virtually out of
the race at
the season’s
midpoint.
It’s got
them puz-
zled and
frustrated.
“ I ’ v e
come in
here the last
two weeks
and answered that question,
and I really don’t have an
answer for it,” Owens said
Wednesday. “I have no idea.
I have no answers. For me to
be here, I just want to do what
I’m supposed to do and try to
contribute as best I can.
“So I’m not here to create
any distractions or what have
you. I’m just here to try to do
the job which they brought
me here to do. I can’t account
for anything else.”
Owens arrived with a his-
tory of second-guessing his
quarterbacks and coaches.
He’s been careful with his
words so far and kept his
frustrations to himself.
Ochocinco seems to be
taking it much harder, in part
because his production is
down. Five times, Ochocinco
has been held to four or fewer
catches. He has only two
touchdowns — Owens has
five — and hasn’t been much
of a factor when the game’s
on the line.
Ochocinco declined to talk
to the media on Wednesday,
a day after he got emotion-
al on his cable show with
Owens when the subject of
the Bengals’ losing came
up. Owens repeatedly prod-
ded Ochocinco to get back
to playing the way he used
to play.
“What you want me to
do?” Ochocinco said, his
voice rising. “I’m on the
field. I’m available. I wear
No. 85. I’m out there. I’m out
there — I’m going to leave it
at that. There’s nothing I can
do but make myself avail-
able, period.”
Palmer didn’t take it as a
dig at the quarterback.
“We’re on a four-game
losing skid and haven’t been
productive on offense,”
Palmer said. “We talk every
day. We talk about trying to
be more productive and get
him the ball and everybody
else on offense. I am not
taking that as he is calling
me out, but I hear him and I
sense his frustration.
“I’m frustrated with the
same things he is, and I
always try to find ways to get
him the ball.”

‘Because I Care’ video contest
COLUMBUS — The
Fort Loramie FFA Chapter
in Shelby County has been
named the $1,000 “People’s
Choice” Grand Prize winner
in the “Because I Care” video
contest, sponsored by Ohio
Farm Bureau Federation’s
(OFBF) Center for Food and
Animal Issues.
To qualify for the contest,
Ohio farmers, county Farm
Bureaus, youth agricultural
organizations and other farm-
related groups were required
to submit a 90- to 120-second
video containing positive and
informative messages about
livestock farming. Videos
were required to be submit-
ted to the contest site and to
YouTube.com.
The winning video, titled
“FL Ag Ed ‘Because I Care’,”
stars Fort Loramie FFA stu-
dents in various roles impor-
tant to agriculture, including
a dairy and hog farmer, nutri-
ent management specialist,
food scientist, a consumer
who supports local foods and
a veterinarian. The students
describe the critical value of
care in each role, from proper
animal treatment and well-
being, to sound environmen-
tal practices, to disease pre-
vention and food safety.
The FFA chapter was
declared the contest winner
after a 17-day online pub-
lic vote amongst seven other
finalists. It will receive a
$1,000 pre-paid gift card for
winning the contest, along
with a $500 pre-paid gift
card which was awarded
to all eight finalists. More
than 5,000 votes were tallied
throughout the contest.

FFA members use PALS to teach youngsters about ag

The Ag Business students from the Delphos Agriculture Education program have
decided to continue the PALS program which was started last year. PALS, which stands
for Partners in Active Learning Support, is a National FFA program in which high
school students teach elementary students about agriculture. The program was designed
to allow the younger members of the community to interact with positive role models
while learning about agriculture. The class plans to visit kindergarten classrooms each
month with a different lesson. October was focused on pumpkins and numerous uses for
this fall fruit. Each kindergartner was able to look inside a pumpkin, create their own
model of the inside of a pumpkin, and learn various facts about pumpkins. Junior FFA
Member Megan Gilden teaches her group of students about pumpkins by letting them
look inside of one.

Service (NRCS) office before
Dec. 1 to take advantage of
financial assistance in 2011.
While most NRCS pro-
grams are offered through a
continuous sign-up, NRCS
typically makes funding
selections once a year.
“This year we’re making
a real effort to make our pro-
gram ranking period earlier in
the fiscal year. Our intention is
to make our program ranking
cut-off at a more convenient
time for agricultural produc-
ers and landowners,” says
State Conservationist Terry
Cosby. “While we accept
program applications year-
round, by making the ranking
period in the fall instead of
in the spring both conserva-
tion planners and producers
will have more time to plan
for implementation of the
conservation practices in the
plan.”
NRCS administers a suite
of conservation programs
designed to address vari-
ous natural resource issues
on private working land and
private, nonindustrial forest
land. Three primary conser-
vation programs include:
• Environmental Quality
Incentives Program (EQIP)
• Wildlife Habitat
Incentives Program (WHIP)
• Wetlands Reserve
Program (WRP)
Each program focuses on
a different aspect of natu-
ral resources conservation,
as is indicated in the name
of the program. In addition
to regular conservation pro-
grams, special funding pools
are available for organic pro-
ducers, nonindustrial private
forest owners, producers
in counties with air quality
issues, and producers in the
Grand Lake St. Marys water-
shed.

ducers and landowners are
encouraged to contact their
local USDA Service Center
office or check the agency’s

Most gardeners don’t
think about burying their
roses, but that’s essential-
ly what they should do to
protect them from winter’s
extremes. Similar to hiber-
nation in animals, roses
and other woody plants go
through a dormant (rest)
period in the winter.
The first step to win-
terizing roses is to keep
them healthy through the
growing season. Gardeners
should protect roses from
insect and disease damage
and maintain adequate fer-
tility and moisture. If the
soil is dry, give the soil
a thorough soaking. Plants
and remove debris, such as
leaves and dead stems on
and around the plants to
prevent diseases from over-
wintering.
The most foolproof
method of protection is to
mound soil around the plant
to protect the graft union.
A 12-inch-high mound —
approximately 5 gallons —
of soil provides excellent
protection. A soil mound
will also prevent rabbits
from feeding on the stems.
Dig the soil for the mound
from an area away from the
roses, so as not to damage
their roots.
Some gardeners prefer
to prepare the rose plant
by tying the canes up with
twine, not only to prevent
excessive wind whipping
but also to make mounding
easier as well. Other gar-

rose cones have been used
with varying success. Some
soil mounding is still advis-
able--about 6-8 inches to
protect the graft union and
to anchor the cone. Plants
must be pruned to fit under
the cone which can require

tilation, because excessive

In early spring, both soil
mounds and cones must
be removed in March as
soon as plants begin new
growth.
