What is TG PLAN?
TG: Think Globally
PL: Problem-solve Locally
AN: Act Neighborly

This project focused on learning and helping through teamwork within our
child safety group. The purpose of this project was to research a global issue,
that we have an interest in, and help improve it in our community.
Why Did We Choose This Topic?

● Personal Connections
● Understand that majority of children suffering have no voice in the
community
● Wanted to do as much as possible to improve this issue
● Not put out there enough, wanted to raise more awareness
● Wanted to educate more within the school community
● Felt that it was a big issue in our community
Signs of Child Abuse
Some basic signs that you can observe include,

● Unexplained injuries
● Changes in behavior
● Fear of going home
● Changes in eating
● Changes in sleeping
● Changes of school performance/attendance
● Lack of care/personal hygiene
● Inappropriate behaviors
There are countless effects that can could make a witness suspicious, if you feel the need to report
something don't hesitate. The children suffering from abuse will most likely not reach out for help.

This Issue on a Global Scale

● Child abuse takes many forms around the Globe

● sexual, physical, neglect or child labor
● huge issue everywhere

● 1 billion children experienced abuse in 2014

● Abuse as a child strongly correlates to mental
health issues and substance abuse as an adult.
This Issue on a Local Scale

● Texas has the highest number of child deaths in the United States
● In 2018 172 Texas children died from abuse
● In the last 10 year the number of children deceased, has fluctuated
from 151 to 227
● 60 percent of all reported cases, CPS has been involved with the family
prior to the child's death
Driving Question: How can we contribute
into raising awareness on child abuse in our
community?
Beginning Ideas:

● Designing and Selling T-Shirts for gathering Donations

● Creating and Teaching a Lesson at at least one school
● Possible volunteering at Safe Place & Settlement Home of Austin TX
● Handing out wristbands
● Putting up flyers and posters
Challenges

Throughout the entirety of this project, we encountered several problems that

slowed or prevented us from accomplishing our original goals. Even though we
faced a couple challenges, we accomplished many goals.
● Schools that we had planned to present at never declined our requests to teach.
● Since child abuse/safety is such a sensitive topic, we found it hard to spark up
a conversation with strangers attempting to educate them about child
abuse/safety.
● Other than raising awareness and asking for donations, there wasn’t much we
could do to prevent child abuse, other than educating people.
● Volunteering opportunities never got back to us, or required extensive
training.
Accomplishments
Although our team faced some challenges that held us back, we still took action in
multiple ways within our community.
● Created an instagram page dedicated to raising awareness, sharing important facts,
& offering solutions related to child abuse. (@agschildsafety)
● Passed out flyers in San Antonio, TX & Austin, TX.
● Created posters with facts and national hotline, put them around the school.
● Passed out 300 wristbands, including hotline to report on the wristbands.

Overall our team successfully raised awareness in our community, in downtown San
Antonio, as well as educating and raising awareness in the smaller community of Austin
High.

Reflections:

● What went well?
