PARTNER ACTIVITY ~~ SOLVING EQUATIONS

Please answer all of the following questions on a separate piece of paper. Be sure each person
hands in a complete set of solutions. Use all skills acquired in this unit, including proper form,
showing all steps. You will be evaluated according to the attached rubric. You may use your
notes without any loss of marks.

1. Billy Bob is four years older than Jimbo. Next year, the sum of their ages will be 36.
How old is Jimbo?

2. A rectangle has a width which is 3 cm less than the length. If the perimeter is 330
cm, find the dimensions of the rectangle. (Be sure to draw and label a diagram)

3. Find two consecutive integers such that the sum of four times the first and triple the
second is 157.

4. How many cups do you need to reach the top of the doorway?

5. For a science project, Sammy observed a chipmunk and a squirrel stashing acorns
in holes. The chipmunk hid 3 acorns in each of the holes it dug. The squirrel hid 4
acorns in each of the holes it dug. They each hid the same number of acorns,
although the squirrel needed 4 fewer holes. How many holes did the chipmunk dig?
6. You have a coupon worth $18 off the purchase of a scientific calculator. At the same
time the calculator is offered with a discount of 15%, but no further discounts may be
applied. For what tag price on the calculator do you pay the same amount for each
discount?

CHALLENGE QUESTION!!!!

7. Use the whole numbers 1 through 9 a maximum of one time each to make an
equation with the…
◻x + ◻ = ◻
a. largest possible value for x
b. smallest possible value for x (negative numbers are allowed)

Explain how you reached your solution.
