Futuristic House Portfolio

Analyze and Conclude

1. Which renewable energy sources did you use in your home?
In order to provide the house with heated water and air conditioning, the house utilizes
geothermal energy. Geothermal energy can be a cheap alternative and it produces little air
pollutants. The temperature underground remains consistent. It geothermal energy draws heat
from underground, which can be used to heat a house during cold winters. It can also be used to
remove excess heat from the house and moves it to the ground. The heat it captures from
underground can be used to heat water. In order to provide the house with electricity, rooftop
solar panels will be used. The average costs of solar panels in Arizona is $16,000. Geothermal
heat pumps cost around $7,700.

2. What are the advantages of using renewable energy sources instead of fossil fuels?
Renewable energy sources are sources of energy that can be replenished. Fossil fuels
such as coal and oil are limited in supply as they take millions of years to be produced. However,
renewable energy sources such as wind and energy from sunlight are easily replenished.
Renewable energy sources limit the production of carbon dioxide and other gases that are
harmful to the environment. Often times, renewable energy sources are more cost effective than
fossil fuels.

3. Which renewable energy sources did you not include in your designs? Why
didn’t you use them?
I did not include the wind turbine as a renewable energy source for my household. This is
because wind turbines can often be noisy and take up a lot of space, especially in residential
households. Other areas often have laws that prohibit the presence of wind turbine on a property.
Another renewable energy source that was not used is hydropower. Hydropower plants often
require a dam that diverts flowing water to turbines that generate electricity. Some hydropower
utilities can have negative effects on the environment, such as the risk of upstream flooding.

4. Do you think people in the future will have homes like the ones you
designed? Why or why not?
Overall, I think that the majority of future homes will utilize the renewable energy
resources that my design has. Climate change is becoming an increasingly important issue, and
carbon dioxide levels are becoming dangerously high. A great deal of renewable energy sources
such as solar and wind power are often more cost effective and lower the production of harmful
gases such as carbon dioxide. For these reasons, more and more people will utilize renewable
resources to power their households.
