Grade Level 5th Subject Math Lesson Title: Escape Room

Area:

Preparation to Teach
Unit Theme Coordinate Planes- This is the final lesson of the unit, reviewing what has been learned and demonstrating understanding.
(Where within the unit
is your lesson?)
Content Standard(s): CCSS.Math.Content.5.G.A.1
Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes, to define a coordinate system, with the intersection of the lines (the origin) arranged
to coincide with the 0 on each line and a given point in the plane located by using an ordered pair of numbers, called its coordinates.
Understand that the first number indicates how far to travel from the origin in the direction of one axis, and the second number indicates
how far to travel in the direction of the second axis, with the convention that the names of the two axes and the coordinates correspond
(e.g., x-axis and x-coordinate, y-axis and y-coordinate).

CCSS.Math.Content.5.G.A.2
Represent real world and mathematical problems by graphing points in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane, and interpret coordinate
values of points in the context of the situation.
ELD Standards: 1. Exchanging information/ideas
Contribute to class, group, and partner discussions, including sustained dialogue, by following turn-taking rules, asking relevant
questions, affirming others, adding relevant information, building on responses, and providing useful feedback.
Learning Goal(s) or The student will be able to distinguish between the x-axis and y-axis.
Objective(s): The student will be able to identify certain locations on a map using their understanding of ordered pairs.
The student will be able to graph ordered pairs in the first quadrant of a coordinate plane.
The student will be able to identify ordered pairs when given an equation for a line.

Adaptations/ Accommodations
Three Focus Students
Focus Student 1: English Learner Adrian- He will be grouped with people near his EL level so he can communicate with them
with ease.
Focus Student 2: IEP, 504, GATE, Alex (GATE)- He will be asked to check all of his group member’s work before turning their
or other identified need papers in.
Focus Student 3: A student who Lilian- She does not speak up when in need of assistance or when she is not following along.
has had life experience(s) either She will often act as if she gets it and never asks for help. I will intentionally monitor her work
inside or outside of school, that as I walk around the room and direct as needed.
may result in a need for additional
social- emotional and/or academic
support
Instructional Plan
Activating Background Knowledge

Instructional Strategies Review of what we have learned thus far with coordinate planes. Review the axes and which one goes first and which one goes
second in ordered pairs. Review how to find points given an equation or pattern.
Informal Assessment Discussion

Student Grouping Whole group

Time Estimate 10 minutes

Instructional Input

Instructional Strategies Pairs Compare using whiteboards- The whole group will be given a problem set. Students will work in pairs within their group of
four to solve the problems. When both pairs are finished, they will compare their answers.
Go over Escape Room expectations with students- team work, no working ahead, using one Chromebook, individual scratch paper
organized by task, group readers
Dojo will be used to put students into groups of 3 or 4. Group Member #1- Group Leader in charge of ensuring team work and
everyone working together and contributing; Group Member #2- Inputs answers into their Chromebook; Group Member #3- Reader
of all materials and directions OUT LOUD to group; Group Member #4- Collects each group members scratch paper and turns it in
to tray
Informal Assessment Practice problem set

Student Grouping Pairs, Small groups

Time Estimate 15 minutes

Closure
Instructional Strategies Groups participate in escape room challenge to solve all coordinate plane tasks and find a key to escape.
They must stay together and work together as a group.
Formal Assessment Escape Room Scratch Paper- organized with work and answers for each task. Each task should be labeled, work must be shown,
and answers must be boxed or circled.
Student Grouping Small groups

Time Estimate 30 minutes
