Grade: Kindergarten

Overview:

Al is a positive and energetic member of our learning community. She shows a love for learning
and enjoys having fun with her friends through out the day. Al is working on making good
choices for her learning when choosing where to sit so that she can focus on the task at hand
and to find other times to socialize with her friends. Throughout recess and centers Al has been
building problem solving strategies, with support from teachers when necessary, on how to
enter play with more than one person and allowing others to enter her games when playing
with another person.
Al shows a sense of adventure when we go outside of the classroom and demonstrated this on
our hike up Mount Parke and during conservancy. She is eager to learn about the world around
her and has a keen eye for finding the small things like; snails, beetles and spiderwebs. Al also
shows this attention to detail when she draws pictures, she makes sure the entire page is filled
and adds special little elements to each picture. In addition, the stories she can tell about her
pictures are even more specific, this shows that she thinks deeply about what she is drawing
and why she is drawing it.
Overall, Al has been enthusiastic to learn through-out her first year in school and has had many
learning opportunities that have supported her in growing as a student. We wish that this love
for learning continues and will support her through her next year in school.
Literacy:

In Literacy, Al has been actively involved in the Daily 5 framework along with weekly guided
reading with the teacher. Al has an ability to find important details from the picture in books
she is reading, to make meaning of the story. She has also been building her skills in recognizing
beginning sounds of words and is strong when it comes to finding patterns in text. Al is
currently reading at grade level and should continue reading “just right” books to continue her
growth in reading. We encourage Al to track with her finger as she reads so she is paying close
attention to text, since she is so proficient in reading pictures and finding patterns, the pointing
will support her in the next stages of reading.
This term we have been focusing on nonfiction text and Al includes many special features in her
drawings, and when asked about them she can describe the picture and will go all the way
down to why she chose a specific colour in her work. In writing we are encouraging her to now
record with letters what she is thinking. Al in confident in using environmental words to write
and sometimes seems discouraged when it comes to generating words/spelling independently.
Al is currently writing at grade level. She can find multiple sounds in words, so with practice,
time and encouragement her writing skills will continue to grow.
Numeracy:

Throughout both the graphing unit and the Geometry unit this term Al had been excited to
show what she knows with an artistic flair. She can read graphs up to ten in 2 different ways, by
counting the filled in boxes, and by using the grid up the left side of the table. In Geometry she
is currently meeting expectations. She can find and name 2D shapes in her local environment
Grade: Kindergarten

and can name one attribute of the shape. She also can match 3D shapes with other objects,
looking at the shape and size, she can also find 2D shapes within 3D shapes.
Students reflection:
In school, what is something you feel good at?
“Math, because I get it wrong and sometimes, I get it good. I like what 5+5 or 10+10 kind of
stuff.”
What was your favorite thing about school this year?
“Recess because it fun. Also, the time we made Easter cupcakes and cookies.”
What is something you feel you would like to get better at next year?
“Umm, better at solving problems.”
What is one area you feel you have had the most growth in?
“I can like talk it out, and I leaned about all the stuff in centers, like what there was, cuz there is
a lot of stuff. “

Goals for learning:

Over the summer, we encourage Al to continue reading “just right” books, focusing on pointing
to the words she is reading to support her in the next steps of developing as a reader and build
initial sound recognition. Providing Al with authentic writing opportunities can support her in
building confidence in writing (e.g. Making lists, writing letters, cards, labeling pictures, etc.)
along with supporting her with letter recognition, building stamina for writing and help develop
her fine motor skills. For general development we fully support play-based learning and
encourage her to go outside and discover new things through-out the summer.
