SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION:
The Sci-Tech pressure gauge calibrator is designed to calibrate a pressure
gauge. This apparatus works on the principle of Pascal’s Law. A change in pressure at any
Point in an enclosed fluid at rest is transmitted undiminished to all points in the fluid. A
pressure gauge calibrator uses the weight pressure which are predetermined to calibrate the
pressure gauge. By comparing readings from pressure gauge and weights that are placed on
the apparatus one can easily determine the accuracy of the pressure gauge. Calibration
defines the accuracy and quality of measurements recorded using a piece of equipment. Over
time there is a tendency for results and accuracy to ‘drift’ particularly when using particular
technologies or measuring particular parameters such as temperature and pressure. To be
confident in the results being measured there is an ongoing need to service and maintain the
calibration of equipment throughout its lifetime for reliable, accurate and repeatable
measurements. Pressure gauge calibrator is one method to calibrate the pressure gauge. There
are numerous ways to accomplish this. It is one of the old and basic method of calibration

COMPONENT DESCRIPTION:

1. Base Stand - It is made up of Aluminum structure as per the system configuration.

All the components are mounted on this structure.

2. Pressure Gauge Calibrator – It is designed to check the accuracy of reading

measured by pressure gauge.

3. Pressure gauge- Pressure gauge which is to be calibrated is mounted on the system.

THEORY

14
Pressure Gauge Calibrator Model FM 55

THEORETICAL DESCRIPTION
A pressure gauge calibrator apparatus uses known traceable weights to apply
pressure to a fluid for checking the accuracy of readings from a pressure gauge.
A pressure gauge calibrator is a calibration standard method that uses
a piston cylinder on which a load is placed to make an equilibrium with an
applied pressure underneath the piston. Pressure gauge calibrator are so
called primary standards which means that the pressure measured by a pressure
gauge calibrator is defined through other quantities: length, mass and time.
Typically pressure gauge calibrator are used in calibration laboratories to
calibrate pressure transfer standards like electronic pressure measuring devices.

Dead weight testers are a piston-cylinder type measuring device. As primary

standards, they are the most accurate instruments for the calibration of
electronic or mechanical pressure measuring instruments.

They work in accordance with the basic principle that P= F/A, where the
pressure (P) acts on a known area of a sealed piston (A), generating a force (F).
The force of this piston is then compared with the force applied by calibrated
weights. The use of high quality materials result in small uncertainties of
measurement and excellent long term stability.

EXPERIMENT NO -1

AIM: Calibration of pressure gauge

APPARATUS: The dead weight tester, standard weights, pressure gauge

EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE:

1. Fill the oil reservoir with oil. Make sure that there is no oil leakage.
2. Open the pressure setting knob and pressure adjusting lever fully open.
3. Open the flow control valve.
4. Make sure that pressure gauge is set to zero.
5. Close the pressure adjusting lever.
6. Close the flow control valve.
7. Apply the 1 Kg standard weights.
8. Then slowly start closing pressure setting knob.
9. oil pressure will deflect the pressure gauge.
10. Note down the reading.
11. Open the flow control valve. Pressure gauge will set to zero.
12. Open the pressure setting knob.
13. Apply the 2 kg weight and repeat the procedure.
14. Clean the equipments with dry cloths.

Observation Table:

DEAD WEIGHT IN KG PRESSURE GAUGE

INCREASING READING (Kg/cm^2)
1 0.8
2 1
3 1.2
4 1.6

DEAD WEIGHT IN KG PRESSURE GAUGE

DECREASING READING (Kg/cm^2)
4 1.6
3 1.2
2 1
1 0.8

Pressure Gauge Calibrator Model FM 55

Calculation:

Pressure in the cylinder is calculated by,

For 4 Kg weight

𝐹 4 𝑥 10
P= = = 14184.39 N/m^2
𝐴 2.82 𝑥 10^−3

P = 14184.39/ 10^5 = 0.1418 Bar

Where,

P = Pressure applied in N/ m2

F = Force applied in Newton = mg

Where, m = mass in kg

g = Gravitational acceleration m/s2

A = Effective area of piston in m2

= 4 𝑥 𝑑^2

= 4 𝑥 0.06 ^ 2

= 2.82 x 10^ -3 m2

Conclusion:
Pressure gauge to be tested will indicate the same value or close value
as we applied the pressure on the piston.
