The course book gives intensive practice of the four skills, Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing.

Speaking: The main purpose is fluency, not grammar accuracy. Make your students interact with their
partners as naturally as possible. Give your students plenty of practice in the use of functions , especially
those appearing in the ‘Everyday English’ sections.

Listening: The books contain class audio CDs with invaluable listening practice, so make the most of it.

Writing: Consult the Writing Section in the Student's Book

Types of writing: see 2016 Types of writing for Teens and Adults on our web site.
For further practice you may consult ‘Reading & Writing Targets 1& 2’,by V. Evans

The Student’s book of both Headway Elementary 4 th edition and Headway Pre-Intermediate 4 th edition
contains the iTutor DVD Rom at the back with excellent and highly varied extra practice for the
students to do on their own. It contains exercises for each unit (reading, listening, writing, video,
everyday English and grammar) and further practice on reading, listening and writing skills as well as
videos, everyday English and grammar exercises. It also has a word list section for every unit. Likewise,
the workbook of Headway Pre-intermediate 4 th edition includes the iChecker CD-ROM containing
further practice for self assessment. Encourage your students to use them all so that they can make the
most of them. Headway Elementary Workbook 4 th edition only has an audio CD.
There is also a student’s website for extra practice and games at www.oup.com/elt/headway

We recommend the use of the Teacher's Book, which will guide you throughout the course.
There is a Teacher’s Resource Disk at the back. This CD contains very useful material:
- Unit tests / Stop and Check tests / Progress tests / Skills tests / Exit tests
- Communicative activities / Grammar reference, Word lists and Tapescripts
We strongly recommend that you use them.
There is a Teacher’s website for resources and ideas at http://elt.oup.com/teachers/headway

Extensive Reading: Start with "The Earthquake" in July, as students will have acquired more knowledge of
the language to deal with the story by that time. We advise you to carry out the activities throughout the
book. Apart from this, you will find the worksheet for The Earthquake at:
www.ucl.dk/media(3248,1030)/Factsheets_for_The_Earthquake.pdf
We suggest you use the audio CD to help students to further develop their listening skills.

Please help your students develop their reading skills by encouraging them to read the story
and exploit it through different activities. By no means should you give them just a summary
to study by heart.

Students are expected to read the story at home, not in class
