Congratulations, Graduates! Often called “one of the most

Despite more than 40 arrests, physical attacks
and serious injuries, Lewis remained a devoted
advocate of nonviolence and voter registration.
Under his leadership as Director of the Voter
Education Project, nearly four million minorities
were added to the voter rolls.
In 1977, Lewis was appointed by President
Jimmy Carter to direct more than 250,000
volunteers of the federal agency ACTION, and in
1981, he was elected to the Atlanta City Council.
In November 1986, Lewis was elected to
Congress, where he continues to serve as the U.S.
Representative of Georgia’s Fifth Congressional
District. He is Senior Chief Deputy Whip for the
Democratic Party in leadership in the House, a
member of the House Ways & Means Committee, a
member of its Subcommittee on Income Security
and Family Support, and Ranking Member of its
Subcommittee on Oversight.
Lewis holds a B.A. in Religion and Philosophy
from Fisk University, and is a graduate of the
American Baptist Theological Seminary. He has
been awarded over 50 honorary degrees, and is the
recipient of numerous awards, including the highest
civilian honor, the Medal of Freedom, granted by
President Barack Obama, the NAACP Spingarn
Medal, and the John F. Kennedy “Profile in Courage
Award” for Lifetime Achievement.
Lewis co-authored the #1 New York Times
bestselling graphic memoir MARCH, winner of the
National Book Award. His book, Across That
Bridge: Life Lessons and a Vision for Change, won a
NAACP Image Award, and his biography, Walking
With The Wind: A Memoir of the Movement,
received the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award and the
Robert F. Kennedy Book Award.
John Lewis lives in Atlanta, Georgia. He has one
son, John Miles. The City College of New York is
proud to honor him today with the degree, Doctor
of Humane Letters, honoris causa.

Edward S. Plotkin, B.E.,
M.B.A., P.E., earned his B.E.
degree in Civil Engineering from
City College in 1953. After
serving in the military, he earned
an M.C.E. in Civil Engineering
from CCNY and, later, an M.B.A.
in Engineering Management from
the CUNY Baruch School of Business.
Ed, as he is commonly known, is a Professional
Engineer in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut,
Washington, D.C., and Massachusetts. He is a
member of many professional organizations,
including: the Municipal Engineers of New York
City and the New York State Society of Professional
Engineers (NYSSPE, Westchester Chapter), both of
which he served as President; the American Society
of Civil Engineers (ASCE), of which he is a Fellow
(he served as a Director of the Metropolitan Section
and Chair of the Geotechnical Group); Director in
the Westchester Municipal Planning Federation; a
member and past Trustee of The Moles; and was the
Chair of the Village of Dobbs Ferry Planning Board
for 50 years, reviewing, planning, and approving
land development and conservation projects.
Ed is also affiliated with the Society of Mining
Engineers—Underground Construction
Organization, the International Tunneling
Association, where he served as the UN NGO; the
Society of American Military Engineers; and the
New York State Highway Superintendents
Association (Presidents Committee). He was Chair
of the Westchester County Professional
Prequalification Board.
Ed has worked in all facets of the industry. As a
contractor, he was Vice President of tunnel
constructor Maclean Grove, where he was Project
Manager for the 63rd Street Cross-town Subway
section in New York City, two cavern stations on the
Washington, D.C. Metro, a station cavern on the
Boston subway, and a section of the New York City
DEP Water Tunnel between Yonkers and Queens.

As a designer, he was Assistant Director with
DeLeuw Cather (now Parsons Transportation) for
the 1970s plans for the 2nd Avenue Subway, and was
later a Consultant with the AECOM team for the
present 2nd Avenue Subway project. He served as
Co-Chair, NYSSPE Task Force, Tappan Zee Bridge
replacement study, from 2002 to 2012.
In government, he was Westchester County’s
Commissioner of Public Works, where his
responsibilities included all county facilities
maintenance and operation, and a $200 million +
annual budget for new and on-going capital
programs. Ed’s current consultancy activities include
constructability issues, peer review, mediation, and
Dispute Board Reviews.
In academia, Ed is an Adjunct Professor, who
taught physics at Manhattan College and
environmental science at Mercy College. He is the
immediate past president of the CCNY Engineering
School Alumni Board, and an active and valued
member of the Civil Engineering Advisory Group
(CEAG) of the CCNY Alumni, which organizes
professional forums and field trips to construction
sites for current students. For many years, he also
taught environmental science to incarcerated men
and women at Sing Sing and Bedford Correctional
Facilities in Westchester.
Ed has been a recipient of many honors, including
Construction Engineer of the Year in 1986, and the
Engineer of the Year Award in 1991 by the NSPE
Westchester Section, and the Engineer of the Year
Award by the Municipal Engineers of New York City
in 1998. The Underground Construction
Association of the Society of Mining Engineers
awarded Ed the 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award.
CCNY awarded Ed with the Alumni Association
Service Award. He was further honored in 2011 by
City College with the Townsend Harris Medal which
recognizes excellence in post-graduate achievement.
The City College of New York is proud to honor him

2019 Valedictorian
Bayside, Queens, native
Elizabeth Yim, the daughter of
Chinese immigrants, is the first
CUNY School of Medicine at City
College student named CCNY
Valedictorian. Yim is from the
medical school’s third cohort. She
completed the three-year
accelerated BS degree portion of CCNY’s seven-year
medical program with flying colors and a 3.98 GPA.
Along the way, Yim received the Dean’s Medal for
Academic Achievement, the Rudin Research
Fellowship and the Mack Lipkin Broader Horizon’s
Fellowship. Her undergraduate experience largely
mirrors CUNY School of Medicine’s mission to prepare
medical professionals from underrepresented minorities
to serve in historically underserved communities. The
Mack Lipkin Fellowship in 2018 led her to the Ocean
Road Cancer Institute in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, that
nation’s only cancer treatment facility. There she
designed and led an independent research project to
investigate barriers to receiving confirmatory screening

2019 Salutatorian
In seven remarkable years,
Kevin Zijian Jiang went from a
15-year-old recent immigrant from
the Chinese port city of
Guangzhou, who barely spoke
English, to CCNY Class of 2019
Salutatorian with a 3.96 GPA. He’ll
receive a BS in mechanical
engineering from the Grove School
of Engineering and is mulling pursuing a PhD in
microfluidics or attending medical school. Jiang’s
accomplishment is made more impressive by the
adversity he endured after arriving in New York.
While learning how to navigate a high school
curriculum taught in a language he had limited grasp
off, his father was diagnosed with stage 3 esophageal
cancer. Jiang and his mother offered long-term care.
Jiang would work on papers, projects and study
while keeping vigil at his father’s hospital bedside
until the end came on Dec. 16, 2016. Through it all,
Jiang worked on advanced projects that ranged from
and treatment among women with cervical lesions or
suspected cervical cancer. Earlier, Yim had won the 2016
Top Presenter Award at the Annual Biomedical
Research Conference for Minority Students in Tampa.
Her research was aimed at improving disproportionately
high lung cancer mortality rates among Chinese
American and African American smokers in New York
City. “I want to help underserved populations, especially
immigrant populations in New York,” she said of her
post medical school plans inspired by her City College
experience. “I have met so many amazing mentors and
have been given incredible opportunities here at CCNY
to learn not only about medicine, but also about social
determinants of health. I plan on incorporating patient
advocacy and public health work into my future
practice.” Her mentor Holly G. Atkinson, MD, describes
Yim as “possessing a stellar blend of academic
achievement, leadership skills, integrity and a passion for
service.” Yim, who’ll receive her medical degree in 2022,
is considering practicing family medicine or emergency
medicine.

Scholarship in spring 2018. Jiang explains the source
of his motivation: “My parents made sacrifices by
leaving China, so that I would have the opportunity
to pursue my American dream. And if I want to
honor my family and fellow Americans, I will find a
way to positively contribute to a country that has
given me hope.” And CCNY, with its famously
diverse campus has been the perfect setting to fulfill
his dreams. In his community, Jiang has served as a
media equipment technician in Jesus Baptist New
York Church in Queens. He also aspires to get more
socially involved in helping Chinese immigrant
families, especially those that have cancer patients.

Commencement
Commencement originated in the Middle Ages as the
ceremony at which university graduates were initiated into the
teaching profession. The City College’s first Commencement
took place in 1853 at Biblo’s Saloon, a large beer garden on
Broadway near Houston Street, when seventeen young men
graduated from the Free Academy, as the College was then
known. In seven of the years between then and now, the
College celebrated a winter and a spring graduation; today’s
ceremony is the College’s 173rd Commencement.
The Academic Costumes vary mostly by the
colorful hoods. The gowns of most universities in this
country are black. However, Yale, Harvard and many foreign
universities have brilliantly colored gowns. The shortest hood
is the bachelor’s; the longest and broadest is the doctor’s; and
the master’s is midway between these in size. The hoods, worn
over the shoulders and down the backs of the faculty, indicate
the degrees and the institutions of the wearers. The lining of
the hood, in silk, gives the color or colors of the institution
granting the degree. The color of the velvet binding or edging
designates the subject of the degree earned.

The Academic Procession is rooted in pageantry from
the early, medieval universities. These schools were usually in
the charge of the clergy, and the order of march followed the
tradition of religious processions: younger and newer groups
preceded the older, with the highest ranking participants at

the end. In today’s ceremony the degree candidates will march
first, led by the deans of their respective schools or programs.
Alumni celebrating their various class reunions will march
next; this year we welcome members of the Classes of 1979,
1969, 1968, 1959 and 1949, followed by the faculty. The final
marchers will be members of the platform party, including
deans, officers of the College, university representatives, the
President’s Medal and honorary degree recipients, various
dignitaries, the Provost and the President.
The Chief Marshal precedes the President and carries
the mace. Though now purely ceremonial, the tradition of the
mace bearer dates back to medieval England, when an official
taking office or opening courts needed a bodyguard. In those
times the mace, or spiked club, was a formidable weapon that
was held ready to protect the official.
The Mace of The City College, designed and built by
Bernard Bernstein of the department of industrial education,
incorporates in its design various symbols associated with the
College. The beaver forms the finial of the mace; the six flanges,
transformed from the spikes of a medieval hand weapon, echo
the wrought iron and masonry arches spanning Convent
Avenue; below the flanges, the circular designs symbolize the
schools of the College; the three medals at the base repeat the
seal of the College. The mace is composed in such a way that
many of the 144 originally separate parts can be removed and
then restored or replaced without involving most of the other
parts. The principal materials of the mace include a walnut
shaft with sterling silver mounts and gold-plated emblems.
The President’s Gavel is carried by the Provost, who
is the chief academic officer of the College. It was given to the
College in 1958 in honor of the founder of The City College
of New York, Townsend Harris, by his grand nephew,
Richard H. Rush. Designed by Professor Simon Lissim of the
department of art, the ceremonial gavel is made of gold and
silver and has ends of Brazilian rosewood. A ribbon engraved
with the names of the College’s presidents encircles the
handle. The names of the schools of the College are engraved
on the hammer; the college seal is set into the two sides of
the handle.
A Brief History of
The City College of New York
This year The City College of New York celebrates the 172nd
anniversary of its founding. The need for an institution like
The City College was recognized as early as 1847, when the
State Legislature authorized a local referendum to determine
whether a public college should be established in the City
of New York; at the time, the city had a population of a
half-million people and two private colleges, which had high
tuition and only 247 pupils. The vote was overwhelmingly in
favor of the proposition, and the Free Academy was established
in a new building at Lexington Avenue and 23rd Street. The
doors to its first entering class opened in January, 1849, and a
class of seventeen young men graduated in 1853; with friends
and family members, that first commencement was too large
for the chapel at the Free Academy, so it was celebrated in
Biblo’s beer garden.
In 1866 the name of the Free Academy was changed by
legislative act to The College of the City of New York. Since
then, it has been called CCNY — an unofficial designation
the College retained even after its name was again changed in
1929 to The City College. Students, alumni and friends call the
College, simply, “City.” The college colors, lavender and black,
were chosen by the student body in 1866. The beaver, symbol
of intelligence, industry and determination, was voted to be the
College’s official athletics’ mascot by a student-wide poll in 1934.
The governing body of the College, originally the Board
of Education, was replaced in 1900 by a separate Board of
Trustees appointed by the Mayor. In 1926, the Board of Higher
Education was established to govern both City and Hunter
College (founded in 1870), and subsequently the entire
City University system, established in 1961. After primary
responsibility for funding the University became that of
New York State rather than New York City, an enlarged
Board of Trustees, appointed by the Governor and the Mayor,
assumed control in 1980.
The City College of New York, originally limited to
undergraduate programs in classical and practical courses of
study, has continually enlarged both the breadth and the depth
of its offerings. Today it offers more than sixty undergraduate
programs and majors and more than forty graduate programs,
including PhD programs in six disciplines.
The City College moved to its present location in 1907, and
now occupies a thirty-five acre Neo-Gothic and modern
campus on historic St. Nicholas Heights. It is really a small
university, with a College of Liberal Arts and Science and four
professional schools — the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School
of Architecture, the Grove School of Engineering, School
of Education, and the CUNY School of Medicine (formerly
the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education).
The City College is the nation’s flagship institution of public
higher education, predating the midwestern state and
land-grant colleges by two decades. It is ranked #1 by the
Harvard-based Opportunity Insights out of 369 selective
public colleges in the United States on the overall mobility
index. For more than 169 years it has been a primary avenue
of advancement for generations of New Yorkers who might
not have had the chance to attend college. Today it continues
to fulfill the aim of its founder, Townsend Harris, who said:
“Open the doors to all — Let the children of the rich and the
poor take their seats together and know of no distinction save
that of industry, good conduct and intellect.”

Stephanie McGuire DECEMBER 4, 1963 - MARCH 25, 2019

Stephanie McGuire devoted 22 years of her life to the service of The City College of New
York and The CUNY School of Medicine. She worked briefly for 6 months in the CCNY
Sociology department, and spent the rest of her time in the CUNY School of Medicine
Learning Resource Center, where she provided office support to faculty, staff, and students. In
her tenure at the college, Stephanie also served as a Marshall for the Annual Commencement
Ceremony; an event that she enjoyed and took great pride in. Ms. McGuire will always
be remembered for her excellent work ethic, her willingness to assist others, her unfailing
dedication to her work, and her commitment to student success.
