 Conference scholarships available
The Columbia Basin Transboundary Conference: One
River, One Future is offering a limited number of scholar-
ships of up to $400 Canadian, to registered post-secondary
students and nonprofit professionals who plan to attend or
have already registered for the conference.
The international conference, which addresses key issues
related to the future of the Columbia River, its ecosystem,
management and international implications, takes place in
Kimberley, B. C from September 12 to 14, 2019. Registration
is $199.
“We want to ensure cost is not limiting participation for
post-secondary students or nonprofit professionals,” said
Kindy Gosal, Director, Special Initiatives, Columbia Basin
Trust. “With this support we are encouraging students and
nonprofits to join the discussion, network and enhance their
understanding of current issues and emerging challenges
with respect to the Columbia River.”
The scholarships are made possible by conference spon-
sors and co-hosts Columbia Basin Trust (the Trust) and
Northwest Power and Conservation Council (the Council).
“The council is pleased to offer these scholarships in part-
nership with the Trust,” said Council Chair Jennifer Anders.
“It’s essential that young scholars, students and nonprofits
with an interest in the environment, government, policy,
science and research have the means to attend this impor-
tant event, which only takes place about every five years.”
Scholarship applications can be found at www.trans-
boundaryriverconference.org/scholarship-request and must
be submitted by June 14, 2019.
In order to receive a scholarship, applicants must:
• Be available to attend the full conference.
• Work for a nonprofit or be a registered post-secondary
student.
• Volunteer at the conference for up to four hours
(example: help at registration table, keep time at ses-
sions, prepare registration packets, etc.)
• Register or be registered at the time of application. Eli-
gible costs for travel, accommodation and registration
will be reimbursed.
• Submit a final report including expenses, receipts and
a short summary (250 words) on what was important
about the conference.
• Be at least 19 years of age.
Successful applicants will be notified by email on July 15,
2019. There are a limited number of scholarships available and
applicants will be assessed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Scam targets BC Hydro customers

emails that ‘spoof ’ a BC Hydro email address, sending

Spring beach cleanup
On April 27, Friends of Kootenay Lake Stewardship Society
and a group of volunteers had their annual community beach
cleanup at Kokanee Creek Park. Although it was a rainy day,
30 volunteers braved the weather and set to work cleaning the
beach.
At first glance one may have assumed that the beach was
already clean but with a closer look tiny pieces of blue and
white styrofoam were everywhere; buried between rocks and
in the sand. Styrofoam is the most common garbage pollut-
ing the shorelines of Kootenay Lake, much of which comes
from degrading boat docks that use large styrofoam blocks
as a flotation device. Being 95% gas, it floats very well and is
promoted as an excellent, cheap material for docks. Unfortu-
nately, when exposed to the waves and weather the styrofoam
breaks down and spreads all over Kootenay Lake.
“This pollution is not only an eyesore but is also harmful to
freshwater species such as fish and birds that can mistake the
plastic for food,” noted Camille LeBlanc one of the organizers
of the beach cleanup. With the hard work of volunteers and
community members, lots of styrofoam was removed during
the beach cleanup. At least four garbage bags were filled with
styrofoam and other garbage and large blocks of styrofoam
were hauled away with the help of Terry and Ursula Lowrey’s
team.
“With more community awareness, I think we will begin to
see less styrofoam on our shorelines. Whenever you are at the
beach bring a pail and try to spend a few minutes picking it
up. It will make a difference.”

 Time to talk ticks
Spring has arrived and people across the Interior Health region
are spending more time outdoors. This can mean an increase in
tick bites.
Ticks are small bugs, about the size of a sesame seed, which
feed on the blood of humans and animals and, sometimes, trans-
mit diseases. Ticks are prevalent throughout the Interior and are
typically found in tall grass and wooded areas. They are easiest
to spot on a person or pet when they are actually sucking blood.
Ticks burrow part way into the skin, bite, draw blood and then
drop off. The feeding tick’s mouth will be under the skin, but the
back parts will be sticking out. When they are full of blood they
are usually blue-grey in colour. This is called an engorged tick.
Tick species and symptoms: General symptoms of tick-borne
infections include fever, headache, muscle pain and rash. The spe-
cies of ticks most commonly found through Interior Health are
wood ticks (Dermacentor andersoni). These ticks do not carry
the Lyme disease bacteria; however, they can carry other diseases
such as Rocky
Mountain spot-
ted fever. Ixodes
ticks (Ixodes
pacificus or Ixo-
des angustus) are
the species that
transmit Lyme
disease. They
tick straight out without squeezing it. After it is removed, clean
the area with soap and water. If the tick is alive (live ticks can
be tested for Lyme disease), you can save it in a sealed container
with a cotton ball soaked in water. Record the date of the bite on
the container. If you have concerns or need assistance removing a
tick, please contact your doctor or visit a walk-in medical clinic.
Although most tick bites are harmless, it is important to watch
for signs of illness and see a doctor as soon as possible if you
notice a bull’s eye rash or other symptoms. If you saved the tick,
bring it with you to your medical appointment.
Fortunately, a number of precautions can be taken to prevent
tick bites and tick-related illnesses. For example, you should:
• Walk on cleared trails when in tall grass or wooded areas.
• Cover up by wearing a hat, long sleeves, and pants.
• Wear light-coloured clothing to help spot ticks easily.
• Tuck pant legs into socks or boots.
