at State Summer Games

The 2019 Special Olympics State
Summer Games were held in Great
Falls on Wednesday, May 15 through
Friday, May 17. The theme was “Rise
Above the Roar”.
Attending the games was the
Opheim team athletes, Donnie
Bailey, Steve Fauth and Caite Grewe
and their coach, John Rogenes. Also
on hand to cheer them on were
Donnie’s parents and sister, Jim, Janet
and Debbie Bailey, Steve’s mother Pat
Fauth, his nieces Brittany Stenglein,
Amber and Sophie Kennedy, Caite’s
mother LaWana Grewe and her
brother-in-law and sister, Dustin and
Brianne Brunelle.
They took part in Bocce Ball

Most everyone realizes by now
that smoking and second hand
smoke is unhealthy for everyone,
but what about electronic cigarettes?
E-cigarettes come in many flavors that
contain a chemical called diacetyl.
When this chemical is heated and
inhaled it causes a scarring of the
tiny air sacs in the lungs resulting
in the thickening and narrowing of
the airways. This causes coughing,
wheezing and shortness of breathe.
This is often called “popcorn lung.”

James Holzhauer
Dilemma
For those of you who live in a cave
under a rock, or in North Dakota and
don’t know who James Holzhauer is
I’ll tell you. But first I have to mention Ken
Jennings.
Ken was a Jeopardy! phenom a few years back
winning 74 straight games and a total of $2.4 million
dollars (plus or minus a few bucks). He averaged around
$24,000 per game. (Again + or -).
He was quick on the buzzer to ring in with a response
which was usually correct.
Ken wasn’t a cocky winner. His smile was genuine
and he was a gentlemen on camera and off from what
I have learned. Many thought his plethora of records
would never be broken.
Then along came James! He’s up to 23 games and
is averaging a tad bit over $78,000 per game! He has
broken the single day record eight times so far. His
largest one day total was...I think.... somewhere around
$131 thousand bucks.
I have played poker, usually Texas Hold ‘em all over
the US when I was trucking. Mostly in pot limit games
where a few thousand dollars were a required buy-in.
(this was after I had paid my dues learning the intricacies
of this complex game in which one plays the other
players more than the cards you hold.) I’ve won huge pots
with nothing more than a deuce and trey....I’ve lost pots
holding the “dummy end” of a straight flush.
During the last couple years of playing and before
I retired from trucking I started seeing a change in the
game. Young kids in their early twenties who had been
playing video poker and winning were infiltrating the
tables in Las Vegas and other known poker casinos
around the country.
If you’re wonder what the blazes all this is about I’ll
tell you.
Those young guns were “nads to the wall”,
fearless, devil-may-care players. They would push all-
in holding a small pair when a flush possibility was on
the board. And that is the way this James Holzhauer
plays the game of Jeopardy!.
Like Jennings, Holzhauer is quick on the buzzer,
goes for the throat from the very beginning and has an
uncanny knack much like Jennings in finding the daily
doubles and pushing “all-in” when he locates them thus
amassing an unbeatable lead.
Is it good for the game....these young gun poker
players? Is James good for the game of Jeopardy? He’s
ruthless, starting right away picking off the bottom figures
on the board ( the highest dollar amounts). So what? Any
player would do the same armed with the vast knowledge
stored in James’ knoggin. It’s about the money!
CNN had three players on who had lost to James. The
guy, Adam only lost by a mere $18 dollars! The two women,
playing against James at different times, lost because of
the insurmountable lead piled up by Holzhauer. After the
game with Adam, James went up into the audience where
Adam’s young son was, high-fived him and told him his
dad was very smart and played a great game.
One young lady, Alex, said it was a real fun but maybe
a little embarrassing experience playing against James
and she didn’t begrudge his winning. She acknowledged
he was polite with her back stage before and after the
game. He wasn’t smug or condescending.
But....Ms. Liberal Progressive Robin, delighted to be
on camera remarked how James didn’t respect her. Waaa
Waaa! She said her opinion was that he, Holzhauer was
ruining the game. After-all....it’s just a game she said!
I say the hell it is! Yeah....it’s a contest to see who
can buzz in first, then answer correctly. It’s nothing more
or less than a football game in which one team is vastly
over-matched and loses 50 to 12.
America is getting soft friends! Folks whine that it’s
not winning....it’s how you play the game. I say BS to that.
Ask any fifth-grader which team just scored the most goals
in a “let’s-not-keep-score-California-style-soccer-game
and although he/or she is supposed to be dumb and not
know if any goals were scored they know! You betcha.
And whomsoever invented the infamous
“participation” trophy must have had a houseful of

and didn’t win at least something.
But I see time is flying so I’d best close. Stay tuned
in to Jeopardy. If you have antenna you can watch on
the Williston station KUMV at 3:30 pm. Then what
you do is invite some friends over who you know don’t
watch Jeopardy! Tell them 6:00 pm (‘cause that’s what
time KRTV in Great Falls plays it). You can absolutely
amaze your guest with your vast barrel of knowledge
as you answer every clue correctly and they sit in total
unbelieving wonderment, mouth agape.
