Cyber-Bullying

(Essay)

“Stick and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me.” Beyond any doubt
words don't hurt physically, yet to the individuals who have been or are as of now victims of cyber-
bullying, words can be the difference between life and death. Cyber-bullying has been a problem
for a very long time. What is the real definition of cyber bullying? Cyber bullying is defined as
bullying through information and communication technologies, mediums such as mobile phone
text messages, emails, phone calls, internet chat rooms, instant messaging, and other social media
sites. Cyber-bullying is a very serious problem that we can’t prevent. Cyber-bullying is a serious
issue that pervades social and private lives of many teens making their existence depressive and
sometimes leading to teen suicides. A cyber-bully is usually portrayed as a wicked young person
who found one more tool to exercise his/her desire to torment others. However, the numerous
cases prove that sometimes cyber-bullies are teens who have problems themselves. The profile of
a cyber-bully may partially explain why cyber-bullying takes place and what can be undertaken to
stop it. However, the most valid explanation of cyber-bulling is that the Internet provided the
additional tool for hurting others and ever-existing human aggression/pain sublimation/self-
assertion migrated from the real world to the virtual space. Bullying has been around forever,
however with today’s technology bullying has become easier than ever. It is easier to bully in
cyberspace than it is to bully face to face. With cyberbullying a bully can pick on people with much
less risk of being caught.

The bully may control every aspect of the victim and have infected their brains. Make them
feel so small that they start to believe they are to blame, tired of always being the victim to their
fun. They might be weak, they might be shy, but you find enjoyment from watching people suffer,
what does that say about you? Words don’t hurt, they bleed, they’re not just bruises, and they cut
deep. Words can haunt them in their sleep.

A single word can give comfort, joy and happiness. Every word that we utter yields a
perceivable power. Our words can destroy lives or even rescue a dying journey. We are given the
chance to speak freely let us be the one who uses words for good.
