ABSTRACT

The aim of this paper is to achieve a literary appreciation to the Noli Me Tangere and the El Filibusterismo,

in view of their literary context. Rizal’s two novels have been primarily studied through the looking glass of

history, often neglecting them as literary works in their own right. This paper attempts to remedy this

lacunae by two means: pointing to their narrative tradition and context; and the literary background of Rizal

himself. It will provide the basis for a literary approach and evaluation of Rizal’s principal literary works. It

focusses on the 17th century and the French Classicism, and will show how Rizal reads the Moralist writers

of the French Classicism to find in them inspiration, materials, and influences for the style and structure of

his novels. The two novels played a vital role in the society nowadays. . This term paper will give us the

significance and value of Rizal’s notable works that gave government the idea to enact a law in studying

Rizal in different schools and universities. Also, having this term paper, this will explain the vastness of

Philippine culture during Spanish Colonialism and what was Rizal’s contribution to the status of

Philippines. This is to give background about the two nationalistic book of Dr. Jose Rizal, El filibusterismo

and Noli Me Tangere. This will give the reader the historical background of what had happened during those

times of writing and printing the said books. Also, this will give you the values and significance why do we

INTRODUCTION

Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, these two novels helped awaken the Filipinos to fight for

their freedom and stand with their right. It had made me realized that war does not necessarily have

to end through means of violence, it could always be ended peacefully, through words and maybe

even forgiveness. Words are far stronger than any gun. Vengeance is not ours, it’s God. Evilness is

at every corner but thou shall not fear because good will always prevail.

This qualitative research is to give background about the two nationalistic book of Dr. Jose Rizal, El

filibusterismo and Noli Me Tangere. Having this term paper, this will explain the vastness of

Philippine culture during Spanish Colonialism and what was Rizal’s contribution to the status of

Philippines.

In his writings, he was sparse in revealing such heritage either. He has a great facility in absorbing

and retelling contemporary events of his times. He was quick and direct and cutting in his political

writings. And his arguments in his more thoughtful pieces tell us how he absorbed and learned from

others.

This research sought to answer the following questions:

a. What major ideas/arguments/assumptions about Rizal do you find questionable in the thinker’s

idea?
Rubin : SOCSCI 302 4

b. Are there gaps in the conceptual framework of the thinker? Are there things that seem

unexplained?

c. Can you compare the thinker’s ideas with other ideas about Rizal? What are the differences in the

underlying assumptions?

METHOD

No words can describe how much were amazed by Dr. Jose Rizal. He used his knowledge as the best armor against

Spaniards by writing some novels, essays & poetry which is the cause of his death. But that’s the thing, he don’t mind

if they going to kill him, he’s brave enough to fight for our country because he loves it more he loves himself. He

used his knowledge for our freedom and went to different countries just to study a lot of things not just only for

himself but for everyone. He had a lots of friend with different nationality because they see how Dr. Rizal is a good-

hearted one. He wrote also because he wants us to awaken in our consciousness in our past, he wants us to learn &

knowledgeable maybe not like him, but enough to make ourselves aware of what happened and what’s going to

happen and one of the reason why he wrote and become historian because he believe that: “to foretell the destiny of

a nation, it is necessary to open the book that tells the past.” His efforts contributed a lot why we are free right now

because of his works & writings, we Filipinos woke up and realize that we must fight for our rights & don’t

let Spaniards and other countries degraded us and our country.

How did you implement critical analysis?

Take note of the steps of your analysis. Even how you took notes and review those notes to come up

with journals and summaries before writing the final analysis should be documented.

The point of this is so that future readers would be able to replicate your qualitative research

approach.

PRESENTATION OF DATA

Jose Rizal is known to be one of the Philippines’ great heroes not only because of his intelligence

but also his deep love for his country with his famous two great novels that has given great impacts

to the country. Noli Me Tangere (Touch Me Not). It is a romantic novel that is a work from the

heart. A book of feeling in which describes of freshness, color, humor, lightness and wit embodied

it. The characters, specifically Maria Clara and Crisostomo Ibarra have delineating a Filipino man

and woman’s attitude and values. It also describes the way of living before, encountering and how

they had able to adopt and overcome hardships that leads to their desires for each other against the

bitterness and cruelty of the leaders before. It shows their determination and willingness to fight for

their love and to our fatherland no matter what consequences may happen to them. It traced the

delicate social and political problems of confronting the society.

El Filibusterismo known by its English alternate title The Reign of Greed, is the second novel

from the head. It is a book of thought which contains bitterness, hatred, pain, violence and sorrow to

the Spanish government, specifically the friars exploring its arrogance and despotism. It is more

revolutionary and tragic. It contains all the abuses to his family and friends were valiantly and

truthfully depicted on this book. Having hatred in his heart took Simoun into revenge. But,

conscience had stopped his plan to destroy his friends and enemies through a time bomb. He was

arrested. His confession was long and painful. But, he died peacefully with a clear conscience and

at peace with God.

CONCLUSION

The lack of understanding of Rizal comes, in my modest opinion, because Rizal was a writer and

suffers the irony of being a national hero in a country where most people do not like to read. Sadly,

the proliferation of monuments, shrines, and homages have not been accompanied by a close

scrutiny of his writings, which are most often read in a very shallow and purely nationalistic

way. Among the many illustrious Filipinos who have distinguished themselves in the service of

their country, the highest place of honor belongs to Dr. Jose Rizal. For Rizal possess an outstanding

degree of virtues which together make up true patriotism. He loved his country not in word alone

but in action. He devoted his time, energy and the resources of his brilliant mind to drive out the

ignorance and the lack of concern of his people, and combating the injustices and inequalities.

Some of Rizal's most convincing insights into the political and social order are contained in his two

novesl, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. In his novels, lesson on citizenship is shown. Dr.

Jose Rizal is a good writer and we may also. In this term paper the writer show how Rizal is good in

writing and the content of Rizal book.
