1. INTRODUCTION
Family is the basic unit of society, a society is within the barangay, and a
barangay is composed of families. Family relationships are an integral part of life for
most people around the world. Decisions about migration are tied together with family
responsibilities. Settlement is also affected by family dynamics, and vice versa. The
definition of “family” is inherently cultural. Although in many cultures “family” refers to
people related to each other genetically or through marriage, it can also include groups
who are cohabiting, fostering, or in many other arrangements.
The researchers aim to know what factors and rationale makes the family decide
to settle in Mangan-Vaca Subic, Zambales, what kind of family does it have?, and if they
are renting or they owned their houses. This study falls in the human settlements which is
classified as rural or urban depending on the density of human created structure and
resident people. Mangan-vaca has 12,057 current population and total land area of 921.41
hectares. It also composed of different physical features likes plains, where farmers plant
‘palay’ and other vegetables, mountains, rivers and etc. It is also known for many
subdivisions like Susana village, Fiesta communities, Creek side village and more. The
study was limited on the identification of the participants due to privacy.

2. PURPOSE OF THE INVESTIGATION
The researcher conducted the study in Brgy Mangan-Vaca ,Subic ,Zambales which is known in
the different villages and rental spaces here in Subic. The researchers conducted this research to
know about the factors that can affect the family settlements. Also to understand the reasons why
the residents of Brgy Mangan Vaca choose and decide to live in their places. This research
shows the kinds of family where the respondents belong, the number of the families who have
their own house and the families who are renting in the said barangay.
The researchers aim to get the respondents opinions about the environment, changes they noticed
in the growing population and the affect of the environment in their family and individual lives.
The main purpose of this study is to know why people decide to settle their family in Mangan-
Vaca Subic, Zambales following to the growing population.

3. METHODS OF COLLECTING DATA
The researcher gathered information by using primary data. Wherein the researchers held an
interview and survey by giving the respondents a checklist that contains questions about the type
of their family and reasons why they choose to live in brgy. Mangan-Vaca and if they are
renting or they own their place.
The researcher also used sampling method in conducting information. By using sampling
method, the researcher got only the 2% of the total population of Brgy. Mangan-vaca and
produced checklist that contains the list that indicates the two categories which is the What/Who
and Why. What/Who correspond to the kinds of family and their places while Why corresponds
to the rationale of the residents.

Using the geographic map, the researcher easily conduct the flow of the survey. The Brgy
Mangan Vaca boundary starts in the St. Theodore in North, Executives Village in West and
Subic Water Districts in South. Brgy Mangan Vaca also have the Ice Plant, St. Francis Chapel,
Fiesta Communities and Susana Executive.
It composed of five puroks. Purok 1 boundary starts in St. Theodore Homes in the North ,
passing in the Executive Village , also in Arnibelles Restaurant and ends before Ilwas cemetery.
The facilities and buildings that Purok 1 consist are the Hawaiian Garden, Municipal Health
Center, Subic Water District , Barangay Hall, Manggahan Elementary School, Subic National
High School, Casa Mia and Philippine Transco Terminal.
While the Purok 2 starts in the street at the back of Subic National High School. The
facilities and buildings that Purok 2 consist is Sto. Nino Chapel. Purok 3A starts in the boundary
of Sto. Nino chapel and Manggahan Elementary Annex. Purok 3B starts in the Solano Resident
and ends in the SFIC compound. Purok 4 starts in the Resettlement Area. Its facilities and
buildings are the Day Care Center.Purok 5 boundary starts in Ilwas Cemetery

The Pie graph says that there are Fifty-Seven percent of Nuclear family, next was
extended family which has an average percent of twenty-nine and last the single family
which only has fourteen percent.

The Pie graph says that there are forty percent of Nuclear family, then the extended
family which has an average percent of forty-six and last the single family which only
has fourteen percent.

The Pie graph says that the reason ‘safe and sound’ is the main reason why they settled in
Purok 1 because it got almost 22%, the next was because of relatives which got 19% and
the rest was 17% for near at school, 13% for near at work place, 12% for low cost of land
lots, both 5% for influence and many subdivision, 4% low cost of rent, 3% for many job
opportunities, 3% and last for other reasons.

The Pie graph says that 63% of the residence of purok 3 belongs to the Nuclear family
while 27% of the residences were in the extended family and 10% belong to the single
family.

The Pie Graph says that 73 percent of the residents of Purok 4 were belonging to the
nuclear family, Followed by 18 percent which belong to the extended family and the rest
9 percent belong to the single family.

Pie graph says that 91 percent of the residents of purok 4 were living in their own house
while the other 9 percent are living in the rental areas.
The Pie graph says that the majority of the residence in Purok 4 chooses the reason of
Safe and Sound and because of relatives which got 20% followed by 18% for near at
school, 13% for near at work place, 12% low cost of land lots, 8% influence of friends,
both many job opportunities and many subdivision got 3%, 2% for low cost of rent and
last 1% for others.

Pie graph says that the 57 percent of family in Purok 5 were belonging to extended
family. While another 26 percent is the resident who belong to single family and the rest
17 percent belong to nuclear family.

9 percent are the resident who is living in their rental area.

CONCLUSION
The following were the conclusion of the 2% total population of Mangan-vaca Subic,
Zambales and drawn based on the methods of presenting data and analysis:
1. The researchers conclude that most people living in Mangan-vaca belong to a nuclear
family, followed by extended family and last single family.
2. The researchers conclude that most people in Mangan-vaca are living in their own
land and houses, few residents are just renting.
3. The researchers conclude that the top 3 reasons why they decide to settle in Mangan-
vaca were because it is safe and sound for their family, because of their relatives that
are already there, and their home was near at school.
4. The researchers conclude that the people living in Mangan-vaca decided to lived there
permanently because their family line starts there.
5. The researchers conclude that Mangan-Vaca was conducive for people whose living
there and for those who wants to live there.

6. EVALUATION
When the researchers were conducting a survey they experience difficulties in
collecting the data. In some puroks of Mangan-vaca the residents were hard to
approach because they think that the researchers are scammers and the survey was
some kind of joke. Because of these difficulties, in some way it affects the result of
collecting information that were needed but the researchers didn’t see it as hindrance
in conducting a survey and find ways on how these problems result a positive way. If
the researchers were given a chance to conduct another survey again, they will accept
the recommendation of bringing proof or letter that will prove that the survey are
100% real and approved by the barangay, documents that will say it is for school
purposes to clarify the intention of the researchers and lastly the researchers should
try to be more approachable and friendly to the target people.
