Transverse Statical Stability

The Ability of a vessel to come to upright when

heeled by an external force

Measure of tendency a vessel has to come to

upright

Moment of Statical Stability of a vessel

Righting Moment of a vessel

• Wind
• Waves
• Tight moorings
• Alteration of course

Righting Moment (RM)

Moment of Statical Stability (MSS)
can be calculated for any heel angle using the GZ value for
that angle.

RMθ or MSS = W x GZθ tonne-metre

Righting Moment (RM) or MSS

RMθ = W x GZθ
GM Sin (for small angles)

RMθ = W x GZθ
GZ is (GM +½ BM tan2 ) Sin 
(for large angle until deck edge
immersion)

RMθ = W x GZθ
GZ is (KN –KGf Sin ) for any angle

Dynamical Stability
The quantity of work done in heeling to an angle

Or the work to be done to heel to any angle

Has to overcome R/ Moments up to that angle

Dynamical stability is calculated by

MULTPLYING the area under the GZ curve up to the angle required by the ship’s displacement

ALSO possible by
