Car exhaust emissions cause more deaths than road accidents according to WHO research. The research found that 1/3 of all harmful air pollution was from road transport, and long term exposure caused an estimated 21,000 premature deaths per year in France, Austria, and Switzerland, which is higher than the 9,947 deaths from road accidents that year. The car fumes also caused 300,000 extra cases of bronchitis in children and 15,000 extra hospital admissions for heart disease made worse by pollution. Dealing with these health issues costs 27 billion Euros per year. More money is spent making cars safer but less is spent solving air pollution problems.
