Human activities related to physical aspects in geography are the use of natural
resources. In general, humans fulfill their needs by utilizing the conditions in their
surrounding environment. If the area has a large commodity of natural resources, then the
natural resources will be the main livelihood of the people in the area. Small industries have
become an important part of the national economic system, namely accelerating the
distribution of economic growth through the mission of providing business opportunities and
employment, increasing community income, and contributing to increasing community
income, and contributing to increasing foreign exchange earnings and strengthening the
structure of the national economy (Hubeis, 2009).
Small industries in Indonesia have mushroomed in recent years, this is because small
industries do not need much capital to start a business. In addition, small industries can also
absorb labor, making it more promising to develop in Indonesia. Situbondo Regency is one of
the regencies in East Java which is located at the eastern end of the northern part of Java
Island. According to the 2015 population census the population of Situbondo Regency was
669,713 people. The largest population is in Panji District with a population of 71,874
people, while the lowest population is in Jatibanteng District with a population of 22,171
inhabitants. With a large population, the Panji sub-district has several small industries that
can absorb labor. One of the industries that absorbs the most labor is the household industry
of household furniture. There are 93 furniture industry units spread in the banner district of
Situbondo Regency which can absorb 329 workers.
This type of research is quantitative research. The method used is the survey method
by collecting data and analyzing the facts in the field with the aim of knowing the
contribution of labor income in the furniture industry in Panji District. Data acquisition is
done through structured interviews, namely a primary data collection tool and documentation
as a secondary data collection tool. Data analysis in this study used single tabulation and
cross tabulation. The number of samples in this study were 329 furniture industry workers.
The sampling technique uses two techniques, namely regional sampling and sample
respondents. Regional samples are taken based on 6 regions with the largest number of
furniture industries. From the sample calculation using the Slovin formula found 69
respondents. The technique of collecting data in this study was interviews and data analysis
techniques using single tabulation and cross tabulation.
The results showed that furniture industry workers were in productive age and most
were married. The majority of workers have a burden of 2-3 people. The most education
taken is elementary and junior high school. Some of these traders are located as head of the
household. Most of the net income obtained by traders is 2,000,000 - 2,999,999 per month.
The average worker in the Indonesian furniture industry has worked more than 2 years.
Dependent burden factors have no relationship with the amount of income earned by workers.
While the duration of work is related to the amount of income. The longer the work in the
furniture industry, the greater the salary received by workers. The majority of workers
contribute high to family income as many as 34 workers contribute >65%.
