While we very warmly

welcome 2019-20 with loads of
anticipation, we bid adieu to
2018-19, a year that has been
very significant in ALERT’s
journey towards the goal set
by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam - ‘to
train one in every family in
emergency response”. Found in
2006, every passing year has
left us with loads of hope and
tons of gratitude to our
patrons, sponsors, volunteers,
partners and the society at
large. Just as we sit back and
reflect, 2018-19 would be
remembered as a year when
ALERT began to run, from
briskly walking thus far.

Note from the Managing Trustee
As an organization, the year has had its share of hits and misses and really, for the cause
that ALERT is here to serve, there are no real misses. They are just meaningful pauses. And
the hits starting from the increased number of people trained; significant partnerships such
as with Tata Trusts, Sree Dayaa Foundation, Apollo Hospitals, Rotaract District 3232,
Royal Sundaram, etc.; launch of India’s first community driven technology based first
response network - “alert VoICE” by the legendary Padma Vibhushan Dr.
Prathap.C.Reddy; awarding 13 real life heroes with the Alert Being Awards; … the list
could go on of which, everything has been a true propeller. Could we be humbled by a
honour higher than to train the Indian Army at OTA, Chennai? Yes, 2018 conferred that
on us.
Moments of truth lay hidden in every emergency incident reported by alert VoICE, wherein
a life gets saved on the outside and a real-life hero blossoms from within. Every effort
becomes worth it when we hear of incidents where a young man saved on the road, a kid
helped in the school, a runner given first response in a marathon, a colleague helped at the
office, a grand old lady helped in a village, by our volunteers. The coming year holds
larger promises with more youngsters taking to ALERT, with more corporates adopting the
cause, with the Government looking at enforcing the Good Samaritan Law, with ALERT
being invited to other regions in the country, possibilities of national and international
collaborations and many more.. We are truly grateful to each one of you for being the
change that we all wish to see in the world around us. As the rubber meets the road, we
hold on to a truly humbling remark by a Senior Personnel from the Indian Army, when he
said - “What you are doing within the border is what we do at the borders - protect the
nation”.
With all of you with ALERT, we are hopeful more than ever before that we would be able
to make a much larger difference in the emergency care eco system in India. That we
would not just run, but fly. Fly towards a better and safer society around us.

The Impact
Aslam Basha provides CPR to a lady on highway

1st Apr, 2018, 9:30 PM | Kanchipuram Vandavasi Road
He witnessed a road accident in the middle of the road & suddenly he is surrounded
by a hostile crowd and fearful family members. But these things didn’t stop him from
helping the lady bleeding to death. Upon checking for response & breath, he performs
CPR. What a miracle! On the count of 15th compression, she starts breathing again!
Sathyenthar recovers an unconscious man in the train

23rd Feb, 2019 | Chennai Suburban Train
Sathyenthar saw his co-passenger faint in the Suburban train, en-route to
Kodambakkam station. While everyone around were shouting in panic, he assessed
the victim’s state & puts him in recovery position. In a few minutes, the victim regained
consciousness!
Kala helps a boy affected by epilepsy
29th Jan, 2019, 9:30 AM | Adyar Bharathi School Junction
She looked up as she saw her car slowing down near the scene. The bystanders were
dragging a young boy having an episode of fits on to the platform. Kala quickly
refrained the crowd from dragging the victim, giving keys, etc. and kept the crowd
away. She then comforted the young lad & attended to injuries suffered.
Her compassion & care, made him weep with gratitude!

What we do at ALERT impacts many lives and in many ways too.

The Impact
Since 2006, ALERT has empowered over 80,000 citizens in

emergency response and has sensitised millions of people to the
need to get trained in first aid & emergency care to save lives.
There have been hundreds of reported incidents of emergencies
(many of which are life threatening) handled by ALERT trained
citizens. The impact that ALERT creates is multi-fold &
contributes directly to the THE GLOBAL GOALS for Sustainable
Development designed by UN.

AWAKE
The biggest problem is being oblivious to the problem

98% Indians are unaware that a common man can make a
difference to a victim battling for life, during a medical emergency.
There is a lot to be done before an ambulance arrives & the
professionals take over. Through AWAKE, we sensitize the general
public on the need to be trained and prepared for emergencies.

ALERT is the first & only voluntary organisation to ensure

emergency preparedness of huge events through First Aid
Partnerships. ALERT trained skilled first responders along with the
necessary supply kits are present at various events that attract

The first step towards change is awareness
On-ground Events are a sure way of reaching people at their

casual selves. Our volunteers spread the importance of first
response by employing innovative means such as role playing, flash
mob, puppetry, ambulance exhibition, etc.

Regional Outreach
The need for Emergency Response is the most felt in rural India
where the nearest hospital is at least an hour away. That is why
PEER programmes are not just meant for the urban city-dwellers;
they are designed to empower all - even people from various rural
& semi-urban backgrounds. Our programmes have been delivered
in various parts of the country in regional languages such as Hindi,
Tamil, Telugu, etc.
