Catalog description: Prerequisite: Mus 211, Mus 221. Structural elements of music such as
motive, phrase and period: binary, ternary, rondo, sonata-allegro and larger musical forms in
representative musical works.

Student Learning Outcomes

1. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the nature of a musical phrase.


2. Students will demonstrate an understanding of how phrases work together to create
larger musical forms.
3. Students will be able to recognize various phrase structures in common music
literature.
4. Students will demonstrate an understanding of how rhythm, melodic contour, tempo,
texture, harmony, and dynamics all contribute to how a musical phrase presents.

Grading:
Final grades for the course will be distributed as follows: 

A+: 100 - 97 C: 76.9 - 73
A: 96.9- 93 C-: 72.9 - 70
A-: 92.9 - 90 D+: 69.9 - 67
B+: 89.9 - 87 D: 66.9 - 63
B: 86.9 - 83 D-: 62.9 - 60
B-: 82.9 - 80 F: Below 60

C+: 79.9 - 77

Attendance:
Attendance is worth 20% of the grade. No Late Work is accepted. Attendance for
Midterms and Kinals is mandatory. Excused absences require a doctor’s note.

Academic dishonesty
It is assumed that everyone in this class will do his/her own work. Academic
dishonesty will not be tolerated, will be reported, and a failing grade for the
course assigned. Instructor’s and department chair’s signatures are required to
withdraw from class with grade of “W” for serious and compelling reasons,
which must be documented. Poor performance is not an acceptable justiKication.
