1. For formalists, the author’s life holds no importance for the text.
2. Formalism and structuralism are similar in the sense that they focus on the elements external
the work than its internal workings.
3. Structuralism is more focused on the meaning of a text than how it makes meaning.
4. For historicists, the society and its history may not be understood using the text.
5. Poststructuralists believe in understanding texts solely on the meaning produced by the binaries
that engendered them.
6. Historicists hold that the text is always the product of its milieu.
7. Poststructuralism allows multifaceted interpretations to arise from the text.
8. Formalists evaluate a text’s merit solely on its internal working, therefore in the intentional
science used by the author for his/her craft.
9. Historicists believe that any text produced within a period will necessarily reflect its beliefs even
if it be about other time frames.
10. Poststructuralist critique cannot be carried out without prior structuralist analysis.
