Grade level: Third grade

Warm-up and Objective Discussion
1- Display cutters which represent different means of transport, and ask if students have been
known the name of each means.
2- Turn on soundtrack of means of transport, and ask students to match up each means with its
sound.
3- Explain that means of transportation are very important because:
 They give people transportation options to get to work, get to school, visit friends, or
go to hospital.
 They facilitate travel to many countries of the world.

Tell students that today they will learn about different means and modes of transportation and
learn vocabulary related to transportation.
Instruct and Model

- Explain about the different types of means of transportation (bus, car, train, plane, ship, and
bicycle).
- Explain specific vocabulary related to transportation (air, land, water).

Model:
Show different objects to the students to let them identify and describe the various means of
transportation, also classify the means based on three modes of transport (air, land, water).
Mention to the following points:
 Air transport is the first fastest mode of three modes.
 Land transport covers all land-based transportation systems that provide for the
movement of people, goods and service.
 Land transport consists of two kinds, the first kind is rail such as high speed railway,
and the second one is road such as bus, car, and bicycle.
 water transport is the process of that a watercraft, such as boat, and ship, makes over a
body of water such as, ocean, sea, lake, canal, or river.
Guided Practice
1- Display pictures that depict different means of land transport. Ask students to tell you what
they see. Bring up following points:
 People travelling on the road are either pedestrian, cyclists or they are using a certain
type of vehicle, such as automobiles, bicycles, buses, vans, or trucks.
 Bicycling: is a means of transport that is commonly used for short to moderate
distance trips.
 Buses: is a road vehicle designed to carry people.
 train: a railway or railroad train is a connected series of vehicles for rail transport that
move along a tack to transport goods and people from one place to another place.
Train stops regularly at train-station to load or unload people or goods.
2- Display pictures depict different means of water transport. Ask students to tell you what
they see. Bring up the following points:
 Water transport is a watercraft carrying people or goods.
 Water transport can be over any distance by boat or ship over oceans and lakes.
3- Display pictures depict different means of air transport. Ask students to tell you what they
see. Bring up the following points:
 Air transport includes all transport through the air, such as airplane and helicopter.
 Most air travel starts and ends at commercial airports.

Less-Guided Practice

Put the students into groups, between 4-5 groups. Each group contains three students, then
give each one of group’s member a specific role. One of them will be a scribe, another student
will be a spokesperson, and the last one will be a controller.
Distribute picture that depicts means to each group, then ask each group to create a paragraph
about means which is depicted on the picture.

Independent Practice
Give each student one picture that depicts means of transport, and ask him/her to write 5
sentences about the means. Students should describe the means and express on its
characteristics.
Tell students that they have five minutes to complete the activity.
Teacher should observe the students and walk around the classroom in case anyone has
questions.
After they finish writing, ask students to read their sentences to class.
Discuss any problems the students have.
Assessment
Give student a picture that depicts one means of transport, similar to the ones they looked at
class. Ask students to write a paragraph summarizing information in the picture and describing
the mode of transport that matches the means.
