BURNING A CANDLE IN AIR

You will plan and then carry out a simple investigation.

THE QUESTION: Find out how long a candle can burn in different volumes of air (inside beakers
of different volumes).

You may use:


• Beakers or glass jars of different volumes
• Graduated flasks – to measure the volume of the beakers
• A small candle
• Matches
• Other equipment or materials which are easy to obtain in the lab

The investigation should be planned thoroughly before you start, and the plan approved.

Carry out the investigation.

Record the results in the table and complete the graph, conclusion and evaluation.
