1 – PURPOSE
The purpose of this Method statement is to outline the procedures and methodology to be followed
during the execution of Blockworks at The Heart of Europe. J K Bauen reserves their rights to amend
this method statement according to specific site conditions. Amendments will be submitted to the
Engineer for approval prior to implementation at site.

2 – SCOPE
The scope of this Method statement is to describe the methodology that will be used for the
installation of Blockworks in The Heart of Europe project. And to give all parties involved an
understanding of the sequence of work’s, risks involved and control measures to be adopted during
the activity. It explains and provides information concerning the materials, equipment, tools,
manpower and methods of application to ensure compliance with approved shop drawings, contract
requirements, technical specification and quality standards.

For the execution of the works and activities described in this document, the
contractor will comply with the Conditions of the Contract and applicable following
regulatory and legal requirements relating to construction industry, environment
and safety.

5 – RESPONSIBILITIES

➢ Project Manager (PM)


Responsible for overall design integrity, approval, resourcing and meeting program
milestones while maintaining high quality finishes as required by the contract and Project.
Responsible for the implementation of the Method Statement and Risk Assessment,
Environmental Management System, Impact & Registers. The PM may delegate/assign
duties to others on the Project team to ensure the safety program is properly implemented
but he has to maintain the ultimate responsibility for the Project safety performance. All
reasonable support will be given in this respect from the head office staff.

➢ Construction Manager (CM)


Responsible for programming all installation aspects and ensures that the partitions are
installed to specification and complies with manufacturer’s standards, project requirements,
labour allocations, etc. Monitoring all sub-contractors work closely to ensure the safety of
the work is as per specification and is completed on time. Review of short-term planning

and advising the PM on any problems. Conducting daily meetings with site staff to organize
work for the day/next day.

➢ Site Engineer
Responsible for issuing of materials to site planning daily works as directed by the
Construction Manager. Checking of the works on an ongoing basis from initial set out to
final handover. To notify the Site QC and/or the Project QC when works are ready for
inspection. To check all drawings for compliance, prior to distribution and installation of the
works.
➢ Site Foreman/Construction Foreman
Responsible for setting-out and installation of the blockwork as directed by any or all of the
above. Ensuring quality of product and program compliance at all times. To ensure that pre-
installation/start-up meetings are held prior to commencement of any and all new works
taking place in site.
➢ Quality Controller
Responsible for checking and ensuring that the works in progress are within specification
and according to Project set standards. To liaise with the Client on quality issues with
regards to the works in progress. Conduct quality inspections with the Client on an ongoing
basis, as per agreed inspection procedure.
➢ Safety Engineer/Officer
HSE Officer appointed for supervising the subject activities shall be SARS qualified from
Trakhees-EHS. Responsible for implementing Project Safety Plan and responsible for daily
site inspections. Conduct safety induction for all new employees and subcontractors.
Conduct tool box talk training. Ensure employees and subcontractors operate in safe
manner and comply with the Project safety policy. Carry out regular and random inspections
on all sites and record results. Record and compile safety statistics. Maintain the necessary
safety related records. Implement safe systems of work for the Project. Investigate into site
accidents and analyses causes and associated corrective and preventive actions. Ensure high
standards of housekeeping at all times.

6.1 Plant & Equipment’s:


➢ Appropriate plants and equipment shall be used for the execution of the activity.
➢ The plant, tools and equipment shall be checked visually prior to use.
➢ Only authorized applicator approved and trained by the manufacturer to install
➢ manufacturer’s products.
➢ All operators shall be trained and certified by the 3rd party where required.
➢ No defective plant and equipment shall be allowed to use at site.
➢ Water spraying system shall be used for dust suppression where and when required
during plant & equipment movement.

Working Platform:
➢ The working platforms for the task shall be firm and stable.
➢ The elevated working platforms for the activity shall be provided by means of
scaffold system
➢ The scaffolds for the activity shall be built by competitive scaffolders trained by
Trakhees approved 3rd party Company.
➢ The built scaffolds shall be inspected and signed off by a third party trained
inspectors/ supervisors.
➢ Wherever necessary, access shall be provided by means of scaffold.
➢ The working platforms shall be used as only platforms for working and shall not be
used for loading block and mortar material or equipment on to it.
➢ Area clearance of 1.2 meters shall be provided from J K Bauen from the block wall to
the back props.

6.2 Materials and their approval:

6.3 Delivery, handling and Storage of Materials

➢ Block works, Sand, Cement and accessories will be delivered to security gate
1 in coordination with the J K Bauen logistics team. J K Bauen Logistics team
will coordinate the delivery of the materials to the designated offloading area
the site as per Attachment 4 indicating the current access to the basement
working areas. Future Access will be coordinated with J K Bauen on a weekly
to bi-weekly basis going forward on the project.

➢ When the materials are arriving to the unloading area, site material will be
offloaded with HIAB Trucks / Boom loaders or forklifts.
➢ Materials will be stored in allocated areas as discussed with the J K Bauen
logistics team and stored as close to the working areas as possible. Stored
materials will have designated safely and securely as per the HSE
requirements.
➢ Cement Bags shall be stored in dry area over the wooden pallets and shall be
covered with tarpaulin sheets
➢ Materials shall be stored and protected from wetting, staining, damage etc. It
shall be stored on timber above ground.
➢ Ensure that all materials used have passed a receiving inspection in
accordance with QA procedures and are not damaged or defective.
➢ Ensure that all technicians and helpers are aware of using the correct
installation, handling procedure to ensure best quality of workmanship.
➢ All the necessary materials, power tools, equipment’s will be shifted to the
site, in a location close to their position in the permanent works.

7 - SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
➢ In all cases, manpower assigned to this work are obliged to ensure compliance with
national laws, Standards and rules throughout the entire project and to take
appropriate additional or alternative workplace safety precautions where necessary.
➢ Prior to commencement of any activity related to block works, all operatives will be
given in a general site safety induction by HSE Personnel, the Site Engineer/
Supervisors will also conduct.
➢ Tool Box talks and method statement briefings to the personnel involved in
operation.
➢ General PPE is mandatory for all personnel will consist of safety boots or shoes,
safety helmet, safety gloves, HI-VI2 vest or shirt and overalls (for workers). Other
PPE requirements will be determined by Risk Assessment as the work proceeds and
other hazards are anticipated i.e. working at height/ or at the leading edge of a
structure.

➢ Ensure that Scaffolds / work platforms are erected, altered, maintained and
dismantled by 3rd party trained scaffolders.
➢ As the work proceeds, adequate working platforms and scaffolding will be provided,
when required.
➢ Where required rigid edge protection will be provided, if it is not practicable to
provide edge protection, safety harnesses will be worn fixed to suitable anchor
points.
➢ Ensure all protruding reinforcing steel shall be guarded to eliminate the physical
hazard.
➢ Signs and barriers must be erected to limit workers access during the activity.
➢ Work restriction due to wind speed shall be followed as per the DM/Trakhees
regulations.
➢ In the event of an accident or incident immediately notify the Project Manager and
HSE Manager. The accident file, which is situated in the Site Office, must be
completed, by the Jk Bauen HSE Manager/Trained First Aider or Trained
Construction Managers.
➢ In case of fire/ emergency evacuate the work area to the designated assembly
points.
➢ There is a Contractor’s Trained First Aider available on site.
➢ All works shall be performed in accordance with the Employer’s HSE Manual and
Contractor’s

7.2 HSE Plan and Procedures.


➢ All applicable local Authority & DM regulations and standards shall be
followed & complied.
➢ Adequate clearance distance shall be maintained for free movement and
handling of materials during masonry work.
➢ Ensure the use of block grab in accordance with manufacturer’s
recommendation to perform the task safely.
➢ Precast lintels must be securely fixed and have adequate safe bearing at each
end to avoid overturning, excessive deflection or collapse.
➢ The chemical products proposed to use for the subject activity, shall be
handled, stored & transported as per the requirements specified in relevant
MSDS. Any disposal of chemical shall follow local authority requirements.
➢ Approved Method Statement, Risk Assessment and local authority
requirements should be fully complied prior with commencement of the
works & while following permit to work system.

➢ Contractor shall identify all the water sources around the block wall and
reroute all the water hoses due to leakage as it has potential to damage
uncured block wall & subsequent collapse.
➢ For further details in safety precautions of specific activities during the task,
refer to the attached Risk Assessment and Control Measures in Attachment 2.

8 – CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES

➢ All required site clearances from proceeding trades shall be given to Jk Bauen before
Block work starts.
➢ Site survey and verification will be conducted as per the approved drawings, prior to
start block works.
➢ All relevant inspections and instructions shall be obtained prior starting block works.
➢ Method statement to be discussed with site supervisors and workers
➢ Risk Assessment to be reviewed and discussed with site supervisors and workers
➢ All personnel on site to be fully aware of evacuation plan
➢ Sequence of activities to be planned including impact on access/egress
➢ All necessary lighting to be in place
➢ Supervisors to be aware of all emergency numbers
➢ A toolbox talk is to be carried out with all workers to outline and discuss the works to
be carried out including all associated risks
➢ No block wall should start prior to provide mock up on site.
➢ Prism test shall be conducted prior to start block wall.
➢ At start of field operations, and periodically during course of work Testing Laboratory
will test materials and mortar and conduct on-job inspections of measuring, mixing,
laying, and curing of mortar and masonry materials, including prism tests, in
conformance with ASTM C 952 and ASTM C 1314-03b to ensure compliance with the
specification.
➢ Number and frequency of test shall be determined by third party laboratory and the
Engineer.
➢ Seven day and 28 day prism shall be prepared for each 500 sqm of CMU wall
installed.

Installation of Block works: -


The Installation of Block works shall be done as per approved drawings and specifications
➢ Site clearance must be obtained prior to start the installation of block work.
➢ A designated cutting area will be discussed and allocated in accordance with
Jk Bauen HSE rules and regulations for the cutting of blocks with a wet saw
that are required on site.
➢ Avoid using less than half size unit at corners, jambs and other location.
➢ A designated mixing area with water supply for the concrete mini mixers will
be discuss and allocated in accordance with Jk Bauen HSE rules and
regulations for the mixing of mortar on site. Hand mixing shall not be
allowed.
➢ The slab surface will be checked be checked for cracks and efflorescence and
any issues will be raised to the Jk Bauen Site team for action.
➢ As built for slab (levels) to be conducted prior to start setting out of block
walls to ensure no rectification is needed prior to lay the block wall.
➢ Site survey and setting out will be carried out as per the approved drawings
and offered to Jk Bauen and QAQC for inspection prior to commencing works
on site.
➢ Preparation for the mortar will be carried out in the concrete mini mixer as
per the approved mix design and specification.
➢ Water shall not be used in excess quantity and will be followed as per the mix
design.
➢ Blocks will be wet prior to use on site.
➢ First block shall be placed, bedding it gently with the trowel until it is level
using string lines as a guide and excess mortar shall be removed.
➢ Similarly, all blocks of the course shall be laid on full bed of mortar and all
joints properly filled. All the block units shall be placed with a single action
and with minimum tapping.
➢ The blocks shall be aligned accurately using a spirit level to check the
alignment in each direction.
➢ All the Layers shall be checked for level, plumb and Alignment as the works
proceeds.
➢ Block laying to proceed in order to not exceed 5 layers a day.
➢ The block work shall be carried up uniformly without raising a part of the
work more than 1200mm above adjacent work.
➢ Approved wall ties shall be provided between alternate course of Blockwork
fixed to the adjacent R.C. column or wall, as per the approved sketch for wall
ties installation.

➢ Provide concrete band beam as per the specification with drilling of rebar
with the depth of 100mm both for horizontal and vertical Column or Slab.
Drill and epoxy starter bar, as per typical Blockwork details mention in
drawing.
➢ Typical block wall to underside slab concealed head restraint as per drawing
shall be provide fire and noise resistant compressible joint filler.
➢ All openings and buildings such as reinforcements, flashings, lintels and wall
ties shall be provided as mentioned on the drawings.
➢ Required openings and reveals shall be constructed progressively as far as
possible to minimize later cutting of masonry.
➢ Mortar joints shall be of uniform 10mm thickness and to be raked out to
form a key for plaster works.
➢ For fair face blockwork, masonry units of uniform size and appearance shall
be selected. Chipped or damaged masonry units shall not be used in face
work. Joints shall be clean and uniformly aligned.
➢ Water Curing for 3 days shall be done for Block walls. Curing shall be started
within 24 hours of the block wall installation and shall be continued for next 3
days.
Installation of GI Lintels:
➢ GI lintels will be used for door and MEP openings.
➢ A single jack will be used to prop the lintel for atleast 3 days after installation.
➢ It shall be safely installed with the help of adequate amount of required
resources.
➢ Bullnose for block wall corner with radius 15mm to be provided.
➢ Calculation for GI Lintels shall be submitted separately.
➢ Precast Lintels shall be used if required as an alternate to GI Lintels.
➢ C40/20 concrete or as per approved will be used for precast lintels
➢ PE sheet will be provided underneath to protect concrete while casting
➢ Side shutter will be provided with a plywood as per the required size, and
length
➢ Rebar will be provided as per approved schedule
➢ Cover blocks will be provided on side and bottom
➢ Proper compaction will be given to the concrete while casting
➢ Side shutter of the lintel will be de-shuttered after a minimum of 12hrs
➢ Curing will continue for 7 days by frequently damping the concrete surface
with a clean water.
➢ After completion of curing the lintels will be lifted by man power to the
required level

➢ Glove, hard hat, and safety shoe will be used


➢ Scaffolding will be provided.
➢ Adequate manpower will be used to easily and safely lift the lintel's to the
required location and level.
➢ A single jack will be used to prop the lintel for atleast 3 days after installation.
➢ For the Cast-insitu lintels, the rebars shall be as per the approved drawings.
➢ The side shutters will be provided with marine faced plywood with proper
supports.
➢ Proper curing shall be done for specified period. DE shuttering shall be done
after 48hours.
Blockwork reinforcement and Wall ties:
➢ Bed joint reinforcement shall be provided as follows,
➢ At every alternative course
➢ Also provided at every course of 800mm either side of the openings
➢ At every course of two course above lintel
➢ Wall tiles shall be installed every alternate course vertically and every second
block horizontally to provide lateral restraint to the walls at RCC columns and
soffits.
➢ Ties shall be sheathed to permit in plane thermal movement.
➢ Head restraint tie is considered where block wall top exposed to view at c/c
distance of 400mm
➢ Column reinforcement – support for Blockwork shall be provided in every
9000mm
➢ Vertical reinforcement will be provided at window/door opening side blocks,
and at typical block wall corners/ends.
➢ Galvanized steel masonry wall ties set across the joints at every second
course with one end sleeved
➢ Fire and noise resistant compressible joint filler shall be placed in the gap.
