Traditional Learning Vs.

Online Learning: Differences, Advantages, And

Disadvantages

These days online courses/training have become extremely popular, as more and
more institutes and companies are offering courses online. However, despite the
popularity of online education, vast groups of people consciously stay away from
such methods, mostly due to misconception. At the same time, despite the rising
popularity of online courses, traditional (classroom) training is fighting back and
trying to adopt newer means of retaining learners' interest. There are always two
sides of a coin. For some individuals, online training is more appropriate, while for
others classroom training is the preferred delivery method.

Let us compare the two methods.

Online Learning

People take professional level courses usually to increase their qualifications and
enhance their career opportunities in their jobs. For example, to get promotion in
higher level and higher paid jobs; in management related professional degrees,
diplomas are helpful. However many employees may be exhausted after their work
and don’t want to attend regular classes. So, naturally, an online class is more
convenient for them, as it saves valuable time, money, and energy.

The best thing about online learning is that individuals can take a course from the
comfort of their office or home. Even with a busy schedule, one can find some
spare time to take a course or study for it.

In online classes, the learner is not directly interacting with the faculty. So in case
of having any questions, they may find it difficult to ask their online instructor, as
communication is often very impersonal. However, these courses often offer
alternatives to live query resolution like online forums, emails, and chatrooms.
Using these alternatives can be helpful for individuals to get their queries
answered.
People often think that interacting with a trainer live is the best way to learn, as it
is interactive and allows for two-way communication. For such types of people,
synchronous online courses will be more appropriate.

Another way to acquire knowledge through an online medium is by searching on

different search engines like Google, Bing, etc. Although this helps by reducing the
amount of books one has to read, there may be too many sources of information
one has to read, and choose the relevant ones, which can result in information
overload.

Thus online learning may be more suitable for grownups who are continuing their
education while they're working in their regular jobs.

Traditional Learning

Traditional classes are more suitable for young children, teenagers, and young
adolescents who are yet to join the workforce. Regular attendance in classes helps
them interact with other individuals of their own age, be better disciplined, follow
a regular schedule, and improve their physical fitness and mental alertness.

Classroom learning helps students and teachers know each other in a better
manner. This allows teachers to know the students and evaluate their strengths and
weaknesses better, act as mentors, and guide students in their career possibilities.

In a traditional classroom, students can directly share their views and clarify their
own queries with the teacher, thus getting their questions answered right away.

Most of the time books and classroom notes are very useful for studying and
passing exams. Understanding the Question & Answer pattern, and with
suggestions provided by experienced teachers, students can find it more helpful to
learn than when using generalized online notes and suggestions available on the
internet.
Also, classroom learning is more helpful due to a continuous interaction between
students and teachers, as it helps students to get rid of their fears regarding exams,
which can rarely happen with online guidance.

Lastly, interactions with good teachers help motivate students to achieve higher
marks

2/Learning has always maintained as a vital activity in each person’s life. The
purposes of learning are varied among people, and basing on the aim ofstudying,
people can choose from a number of methods to increase the efficiency. The
purpose of this essay is to contrast the differences between online learning and
traditional class learning. The three main differences are flexibility, environment
and effectiveness.

The most notable difference between online learning and traditional learning is the
flexibility in time and in place. With online learning, all you need is your
computer, in connection with the Internet and a registered online course, then you
are free to learn anytime you want, anywhere you feel comfortable with studying.
Learning in traditional class, on the contrary, depends on the rules and regulations
of class that one must follow. Beginning time, finishing time and location of class
are already fixed. What you do is to find class that fits your schedule together with
its whereaboutswhich is most convenient to attend.

Comparing both types of learning we notice another difference. There is

environmental factor that affects both of them. Online learning means you only
study by yourself or in pair, there is no face-to-face conversation with teachers, no
group discussion with fellow friends and therefore, you need to be in self-
discipline and high spirit to make the best out of online course. Nonetheless, if you
are the kind of person inspired by the energetic atmosphere of class and you are
more productive working in a group of people, traditional class is right for your
choice. In class you also have teachers to assist, to talk directly when in doubt of
any knowledge.

Yet another difference between two types of learning is the effectiveness. The
environment of class learning is much more ardent than learning with computer.
The benefit of learning via the Internet is that you will be more focused, learning
process will be speeded up and as a result, you can do more tasks and homework.
On the other hand, one beneficial factor learning in class brings about is you can
listen to everyone’s ideas, have a broader understanding and deeper knowledge of
lessons.

Here are the main three differences between online study and traditional class
study. As we can see it comes down to a personal choice, based on the time each
person has, the environment that they feel most comfortable learning in and their
learning productivity in each environment. For these reasons, it is important that
you consider your possibilities and choose the best type of learning for your
convenience.

4/The Traditional Education vs Online Education

Nowadays, education becomes one of the important things in human life.
Most of people are aware to obtain the education. Beside that, every country
always concern on developing the quality of the education to improve the human
resources. If the quality of human resources of a country is good, indeed, the
quality of that country will be good too. As the matter of fact, we cannot deny that
the improvement of technology really influence the education itself. Last time,
before the advance of technology, the implementation of education system is still
traditional. But, it is different nowadays. The implementation of the education is
not only traditional but also online. Both of them have several similarities and
differences; one similarity in terms of books and paper factors and two differences
in terms of cost and level playing field.
Let us first have a look at the similarity. One of the
similarities betweentraditional education and online education is books and papers
factor. For this time, we often think that books and papers are always deal with
traditional education. We consider that schools which implemented this system is
leak in terms of technology, so the sources which they use as the references are
mostly books, the teachers and the students write their notes in papers.
Nevertheless, the teachers and the students who are learning in schools which
implemented online education also need books and papers as well. Although most
of their references are from internet, they still need the books to enrich their
understanding about the subjects they are teaching or learning. Beside that,
sometime they also need printout of their works or their references as the evidence.
One of the students who are studying in online institution says, ” Are you thinking
that if I get myself admitted in a online institutions I won’t have to read any paper
back books, it will be wrong. You must have to read the paper books or e-books
that will be given by the teachers as a reference book.” (http://online-education-
consultant.com/)
Not only the similarity, traditional education and online education also have
differences, two of which are cost and level playing field. Now, we are going to the
first difference which is deal with cost. The students who attend the school which
implemented traditional education will spend much more money. If their house is
not near from their school, they will spend their money for buying gasoline for
their private transportation. It will be the same if they do not have any private
transportation because they have to pay public transportation to go to school.
Moreover, if the distance between their house and their school is too far and they
do not have any relation, they must rent a house or at least live in a boarding house.
That will spend much more money because they have to pay not only for renting or
boarding house but also for food. On the other hand, online education is cheaper
than traditional education. For instance, the students who live far from their school
do not need to spend a lot of money for transportation. They can study anywhere as
long as they have computer and internet access. Beside that, the students from
other city or island do not need to live in a boarding house or rent a house and pay
for it. They can still live in their house and do not need to buy food for
themselves.
Another difference between traditional education and online education is
level playing field. The students of traditional education must come to the
class for study. Thus, there are some discrimination in it. It gives the limitation for
those who are disabilities to attend the class. Moreover, there are several gaps
between students who are different in terms of physical appearance, race, gender,
etc. That is why some students fell uncomfortable when they study in class. Not
only that, the students who are introvert feel shy to express their idea in front of the
class. In contrast to traditional education, there is no discrimination in online
education system. “Certain discriminating factors such as age, physical
appearance, race, gender, and even disabilities are largely absent from online
education classes. Many students find this open and accepting atmosphere very
liberating.” (http://www.onlineeducation.com/resources/) As the matter of fact, the
students of online education do not need to come to class for studying. Thus, no
matter who they are, can study without any burden or feeling shy. They can be
active and feel comfort to share their idea in disccussions.
In sum up, there are several similarities and differences between traditional
education and online education. One of the similarity is in term of books and
papers factor and two of the differences are in terms of cost and level playing
field. However, both of them are still exist today. For those who want to attend the
school, they can choose the school which implemented traditional education or
online education by considering my explanation above.

5/ Nowadays, online classes have become more popular and many students enrol in
them. There are, nonetheless, some learners who still prefer traditional classroom
learning. In my opinion, traditional courses and online courses both have their
merits; even so, I feel that online courses are better than regular classroom courses
in many ways.

Online classes certainly have numerous advantages associated with them. To start
with, they are much cheaper than traditional courses. By enrolling in an online
programme, poor students who cannot afford expensive collage education can
acquire valuable skills and earn degrees, that too from the comfort of their home.
Another advantage of online courses is their flexibility. You can take them
whenever you want and from wherever you are. By contrast, in order to do a
regular course, you have to be in a classroom at a specific time. If you cannot make
it at that time, you will miss the class. This is not the case with online learning. The
ease of taking the class at a time convenient to the learner has made it quite
popular among working professionals who want to upgrade their skills.

By contrast, traditional classroom learning alsso has its benefits. The most
important among them is the better interaction between the teacher and the student.
A machine can only deliver the lessons; it cannot figure out whether the student
has understood the concepts. A teacher, on the other hand, can easily figure out
whether the student has understood something by simply looking at their face. As a
result, teachers can clear doubts then and there and this helps with the progress of
the student. Yet, the lack of flexibility and higher costs make traditional learning
an unviable option for many students.

To conclude, after analysing both sides of the argument it is not hard to see that
traditional learning and online learning have their merits and demerits. However, in
my opinion, online learning is better because it makes education accessible to
almost everyone – even people who have a full time job.
