gear in advance.
z Run slowly in bottom gear in the beginning in frost seasons.
After all parts ofter the gearing have better lubricated,
change to top gear gradually to avoid damaging the
transmission work.
z When the forward step and the back off step interconvert,
the shift should be carried through after the machine draws
up completely, or the gear may be damaged because of great
impaction.
5.2.5 Steering
This series of road roller adopt fully hydraulic steering devices,
so its manipulation is similar to common mechanical steering
devices. But please notice that when the engine rotational speed
reduces, the oil supplied by the turning oil pump will reduce and
the rotational speed will be influenced too. Especially when the
engine is shut off, the turning oil pump do not supply oil and the
turning manipulation will fail. In rapid turning, the machine
must run at low speed and at the same time the engine speed can
not be too low, especially prevent shutting off.
DANGER:Prohibit shutting off and slipping down the
slope, or steering will be out of control.Still notice
following points when steering:

z In addition to my company regulations, it is not allowed to

add any electrical components.
z When cleaning the whole machine or operate in the rain and
snow, maintain the electrical system dry. When operating at
the beach, prevent corrosion caused by sea water torwards
the electrical system.
3.6.2Charge the storage battery

! WARNING
z When charge the storage battery rapidly, firstly remove
the hood of the battery. When charging the battery,
explosive nitrogen-hygrogen mixture may appear, short
circuit, flame nearby may cause powerful explosion.
There is an indicator lamp showing electric charging status of
battery on the cover of storage battery. When the indicator lamp
becomes green, the battery is normal. When the indicator lamp
becomes black, the battery should be charged. When the
indicator lamp becomes white, the battery should be changed
instantly. While charging the battery, if dealing with it wrong,
the battery suffers from the danger of explosion. So operate
according to the stated procedure of dealing with storage battery
and relevant stated procedure in the operation instruction, and
comply with the following points for attention:
zDuring charge the storage battery generates hydrogen and
nitrogen, once the gas meets with flame or the vent is blocked,
the explosion will happen. So the storage battery should be far
away from flame, and avoid short circuit.
z During charging, remove all screw plugs in order to make
ventilation better. Be not close to fire or spark to prevent
explosion.
z During charging the positive pole of charger should connect
with the positive pole of storage battery, the negative pole of
charger should connect with the negative pole, reverse
connection is forbidden.
z During charging the battery generates gas, vent hole should
be checked regularly in case that the hole is blocked and the
64
Operation & Maintenance Manual──RS8140 Vibratory

battery explodes.
z When the temperature of electrolyte exceed 45°C in the
progress of charge, reduce the voltage and electric current of
charge accordingly to prevent that too high temperature makes
the electrolyte spray.
z Before charging, get down the wire from negative pole of
battery, or high voltage appears and destroys the alternator.
z The positive pole of the charger connects with the positive
pole of storage battery, the negative pole of the charger connects
with the negative pole of storage battery. Do not charge the
battery in series (24V)
z Suggest to use the charger of constant voltage 16.0 V (do not
exceed 16.2V, or a amount of water is electrolyzed, and the level
drops, the indicator becomes white, and the battery is discarded)
and limiting the electric current 25 A charges until the charge
electric current is less than 2A and the indicator becomes green.
zIf in the progress of charge, the vent hole of storage battery
spray a amount of acids, stop charging instantly and find the
cause.
z In the progress of additional charge, check the indicator once
an hour. If the indicator of storage battery becomes green, the
storage battery is fully charged and stop charge.
z The voltage of battery that is charged just now may be more
than 13 V, but it is electrical floatation, let it on standing for
several days or discharge it several times, and the electrical
floatation will disappear.
z After additional charge and tested qualification, it is
suggested to coat the grease on the end column to prevent
electrical erosion.
z After charging, turn down the charger. Excessive charge may
cause the following situation: the storage battery is very hot;
electrolyte is lack; the battery plate is destroyed.
3.6.3.The points for precautions during welding
Welding should be operated by welder with relevant
qualification and skills on the location with relevant equipments.
-
65
Operation & Maintenance Manual──RS8140 Vibratory

during working, so the worker without relevant qualification is
forbidden to operating. Comply with the following points for
attention during welding:
z Turn off the main power switch before welding.
z Cut the terminal of the storage battery to prevent explosion
of it.
z For the wheel loader with ZF control unit, the plug terminal
of computer’s control panel of gear should be disconnected to
prevent that impulse current damages the computer’s control
panel during welding; after repair, make sure that plug terminal
of computer’s control panel connects well according to the
requirement, or the machine can not start and running.
z Clear the paint on the location of (the radius of the circle
around welding spot is 10cm at least) to prevent harmful gases.
If welding on the hydraulic equipments or pipes or the very
close location, the combustible steam and sparks are generated
in the danger of burning or explosion, so avoid welding on the
above locations mentioned.
● When welding, splashing spark directly drop on the rubber
hoses, wires or pipes with pressure, and the pipes may be
ruptured suddenly, the insulating skin of wires may be destroyed,
so cover them with fire resisting shield.
z Wear protective clothing during welding.
z The ventilation of welding place should be fine.
z Clear up all the combustible materials, and prepare fire
extinguisher on working place.
z The changes can not affect the performance, safety and
strength of the vehicles and working devices.
3.6.4 Change the fuse

4. Lubricating system
4.1 Lubrication of roller
The correct lubrication can decrease the friction resistance of the
machine components and the abrasion of parts enormously. And
it can ensure service performance of the machine and increase
the service life. The working oil is also lubricant and cooling oil
in the hydraulic system and vibration wheel of the road roller. So,
refueling oil and changing oil period have especially important
significance to the regular service of the road roller.
Lubricating parts and periodic table: refer table 1.
Instructions:
Refuel and change the oil period according to the periodic table
besides the routine checking and refueling before dispatching the
machine everyday. The lubricating cycle is divided into four
types of every 50 hours service, every 200 hours service, every
600 hours service and every 1200 hours service. If the oil has
metamorphosed after check-up, it should be replaced at once. If
the oil metamorphoses in a short period after change, find out
the reason and deal with it in time.
z The particular method of the engine lubrication please refers
to the engine instruction book.
z Inject the lithium base grease into the four joint bearings at
the gyroscopic bearing articulate frame individually though
the four M10×1 oil cups to lubricate. After the injection,
leave a bit of grease on the oil cups to prevent dust coming
into and pollute the grease. If the grease can not come into
the bearing, use the lifting jack to decrease the load of the
bearing, and then inject the grease.
z Signs:
△ The first changing oil after the new machine running in.
◎ The season character changing oil.
○ Check the oil level and refuel the oil.

6. Periodic replacement of major features

The periodic maintenance is necessary to keep safe when the
machine is operated or driven. In addition, the parts in the list of
periodic change parts below should be changed periodically in
order to improve the security. These parts are related to security
and fireproofing, so contact the manufacturer for change.
The materials of these parts may change as the time passes by,
thus they may be easy to wear and deteriorate. But the
application situation of these parts is difficult to estimate in the
daily maintenance, so it is required to change as long as the
fixed time comes. It is necessary to completely keep the function
of these parts.
If these parts appear abnormal despite the periodic maintenance
is undue, immediately change or remedy. If the tube clamps
appear deteriorated, change them at the same time.
In addition, check the hydraulic tubes which are not listed as
periodic change parts. Tighten or change if abnormity appears.

7. Choice of oil

7.1 Detailed Rules of Using Oil, Fuel and Coolant

! WARNING
z Because of bad operating conditions (high temperature
and high load) and dusty ambient circumstances, oil
easily is deteriorated. Change oil as soon as the oil
deteriorates or is mixed with many impurities.
z Add the specified volume of oil. Either too much or too
little oil may cause problems.
z Clean and replace the relative filters when changing
oil.
7.1.1 Fuel
z Fuel pump is a precision instrument. If the fuel mixes with
water or dirt, the fuel pump will not work normally.
z Never let impurities enter when changing and adding fuel.
z Strictly choose the fuel brand according to this manual.
z The fuel may be frozen at low temperatures (particularly
temperatures lower than -15℃). So it is necessary to change
the kind of fuel according to the environment temperature.
z Always fill the fuel tank full after operating to prevent the
water, which is condensed by the moisture in the air, from
entering the fuel tank.
z If the engine fails to suck fuel or the filters have been just
replaced, drain out the air in the circuit.
7.1.2 Coolant
z If the engine overheats, add coolant until the engine cools
down completely.
z Add coolant to specified level. If the level is too low, it will
cause the overheating of the engine system and the
corrosion of the cooling system.
z Antifreeze is flammable. Keep fire away when adding the
antifreeze.
z Do not use 100% antifreeze as coolant, the concentration of
the specific formula has been in the following table.

7.1.3 Lubricant
z Lubricant is used to reduce noise and prevent wear on the
joint surfaces.
z Joints not included in the manual (connectors, jointing
sleeves) are treated during overhaul. So they do not need be
lubricated. When some parts become inflexible because of
long-term operation, it is necessary to add lubricant.
z Remember to wipe off the overflow lubricant when adding
it.
7.1.4 The Storage of Oil and Fuel
z Prevent water, dirt or other impurities from mixing with the
oil.
z Follow the rule, first in first out, to maintain oil quality
during long-term storage (Use the oil with the longest shell
life).
7.2 Selection of Fuel
7.2.1 Use of fuel
z Use oil according to the brand and the oil content
strictly.(Refer to the table 1.)
z When fulfilling the fuel, hydraulic system working oil
and grease, clean the greaser, container and the part of
filling oil to keep water, dirty mire, sundries from
coming into the oil.
z Refueling various oil liquids must use a filter, except
the grease.
-
75
Operation & Maintenance Manual──RS8140 Vibratory
Roller

z Refueling the grease should not end until the clearance

of the filling oil part overflows grease. And erase the
overflow grease.
z When replace fresh oil, discharge the dirty oil after the
machine stops working; inject rinse oil and make the
machine turning for a few minutes in the condition of
no load. After the engine stops running, discharge all of
the rinse oil at each part and inject clean fresh oil again.
The engine runs at low speed, then refuel the fresh oil
to demanded oil lever. The fuel tank should be
periodically cleaned.
z Change the varieties of the working oil and lubricant
according to practical situations and operating
requirements in different seasons.(Refer to 7.2.2"Oil
reference table 1 "of this chapter.)
z When refuel various oils or check the oil content, the
road roller must be in horizontal position. The refueling
of machine parts, such as the drive axle, the vibration
cavity of vibratory wheel, transfer case, should not end
until the position of oil lever plug screw overflow oil
liquids, except the part has dipstick or designation.
Refer to figure 6-1.

Fig.6-1. Rear axle oil filter and oil lever

7.2.2 Note for using oil
z Complement the fuel of the fuel tank to prevent blotting
timely. Check once if the fuel tank is polluted and if some
76
Operation & Maintenance Manual──RS8140 Vibratory
Roller

sediment is in it every month, clean the oil filter at the same time.
The diesel engine fuel must be replaced regularly, because the
mechanical impurity in the fuel will increase along with time
going. The reasons of impurities increasing are: the resultant
after oxidation and abrasion of the parts, combustion remnant in
the air cylinder and dust from the outside. When the content of
the impurity reaches 0.4~0.5%, the fuel will become black and
the physicochemical guideline will go bad. Changing fuel should
be in the hot condition.
z Check the cleanliness of the hydraulic fuel periodically. The
method is: take out a few drops of oil from the fuel tank and
drop them onto the 240-mesh filter paper. If a canary circle
appears on the paper, the fuel can keep on using. If the circle is
obvious, the fuel is polluted and need to be replaced. Adding the
fresh fuel must use the oil filter. Do not inject the fuel into the
fuel tank directly. Do not mix several kinds of hydraulic oil to
use. When changing the fuel, the former oil must be cleaned out.

CHAPTER V Principle
Introduction
1 engine system

The engine used in this machine is SHANGCHAI diesel engine.

Refer to 《 Diesel Engine Maintenance Manual 》 for the
performance, construction and maintaining of diesel engine
1.1 Air filter

RS8140 roller applies KLG serial air filter. The maintenance is as

follows:
z The air filter requires constant maintenance every 50 hours
after stopping. Release the bolts, ash-pan and bar clasps,
clear the ash in the ash-pan, unload the main air filter, and
blow it from outer to inner with compressed air, knock its
cap. It is forbidden to wash the air filter with oil and water.
z The air filter should be carefully checked after maintenance.
If the filter paper is broken, the cap is deluded, or the air
filter is used for 5~6 times, the air filter should be changed.
Method of changing is to soak the main air filter in hot
water, and unload the plastic paddle ring and dry it, if it is in
good condition, press it into a new main air filter without
plastic paddle ring. If the plastic paddle ring is broken, a
new main air filter with plastic paddle ring should be
changed.
z Safe air filter elements require no maintenance. When the
main air filter element is damaged, much ash on the main air
filter element or it is used for one year, change it.
z The air filter should be assembled correctly with every
component. The shell of the air filter should not be flatted.
The bolt of the bar clasp out of ash-pan should be
strengthened to seal. Be sure the plastic ash exhauster bag is
vertical, and forbid operating without plastic ash exhauster
bag.

2 Transmission system

Running system of this series road roller is made up of clutch,

gear box, final drive shaft, back drive shaft, axle arm, tyre rim.
2.1 Clutch and Control System
The series of RS8140 roller is equipped with CF 380 clutch which
is manufactured by Heavy Truck Corporation in China. This
clutch is slice helical spring clutch. The control systems are
hydraulic control system and air actuator. The main components
are clutch, actuator and main clutch pump. See Figure 7-1.

2.2 Clutch
a、The clutch is used for separating or combining the power of
engine system. The function of it is as followed.
z Start the engine under no load.
z Cut off the power temporarily in order to shift. The gear will
be damaged by the impactation without the clutch.
z The vibration and the impact which is caused by initial
starting could be avoided by the clutch, at the same time the
engine system and running system are connected smoothly.
z When the transmission system is overloaded, the clutch will
slip at short time in case of the damage to transmission
system.
z The temporary power off or the power off before applying
the brake could be realized by separating the clutch. From
above mentioned, the clutch ensure the road roller’s smooth

-

Roller

starting, the steady operation of the transmission system,

and limits the maximum load of the transmission system,
protects components from breaking. So the clutch is
essential part of the transmission system.
b、The Use and Maintenance of the Clutch
The function of clutch is to ensure the power could be reliably
deliver from the engine to the transmission system or separate
them.
z The clutch must be assembled in strict accordance with the
instruction, declination, unloading of the thrust ring, or
damage of the hang spring are forbidden.
z The clearance between the separation bearing and thrust
ring is 3~4mm.
z No greasy dirt at the friction surface of the clutch, picking
oil should be cleared before the assembling.
z Foreign material is not permitted to enter into the clutch unit
or the shell.
z The declutch distance of clutch is 10mm, the free stroke of
the pedal is 35~40mm.
2.3 Clutch Booster
2.3.1 Principle of Operation
When the clutch pedal is stepped on, the base pump press the
oil to piston of the actuator working cylinder20, some of the oil
push the piston 20 forward and make the pushing bar 16
connect with separating yoke when the spiral fork declutch with
the clutch. Part of the oil come through oil canal push the
control piston forward, open the rubber valve 14, make the
depressed air pass over the space which located between the
control piston 12 and front cap 10, then the oil enter into the
booster body 7, driving piston 3 to move forward, thus the
bar28 promotes piston 20 travel together and enhance the force
of declutching, finally the pressure on the clutch pedal is greatly
reduced.
2.3.2Usage, Maintenance and Ordinary Malfunction
The reliability of clutch actuator should be perfect, if anything
happens to actuator, the clutches can not separate or connect,
92
Operation & Maintenance Manual──RS8140 Vibratory
Roller

leading the road roller cannot work. So correct usage and

conscientious maintenance is important.
z It is not permitted to mix different brands oil together to use.
The oil should be changed after maintenance of 600 hours.
z If there is any air in the oil canal, the performance of
actuator will be affected. So the air should be exhausted
thoroughly.
z If the pressure on the booster pedal is small and the
operation of declutch becomes slow, it means that air exists
in the oil canal. The air should be exhausted thoroughly, and
gas leakage of the oil canal should be checked.
z The wearing of lock ring of control piston can make the oil
and air mixed up, thus the depressed air come into pump
piston which leads the pushing force of the pump to
decrease and the clutch can not declutch thoroughly.
z After 600 kilometer’s working distance, the clutch actuator
should be unloaded, cleared and checked by professional
mechanic. The wear components should be changed.

2.4 Clutch Base Pump

2.4.1 Operating Principle
When the clutch pedal is stamped, the brake fluid is transferred
from base pump into clutch actuator via oil pipe and push the
actuator piston to move forward, which promotes the release
yoke to work, thus the bearing block is forced to separate from
the clutch.
2.4.2 Maintenance Attention
z Brake oil must be in accordance with the qualified brand,
and check and add oil at regular time (200h). It is forbidden
to mix different brands of brake oil to use.
z The air in the oil canal should be exhausted thoroughly,
because it affects normal operation of clutch control system.
Air-bleed bolt 6 should be strengthened after releasing air
and wrapped by safety cover.
z Oil should be cleaned. If it is mixed with sand or metal
grains, the surfaces of main cylinder, work cylinder and
piston become coarse leading to leakage.
z Synthetic brake fluid usually corrodes the surface of
aluminum piston. Above half a year of the road roller
storage period can lead the piston expanding and firm.
Check the operation system once a year to sure whether it is
perfect.

z Maintenance
Attention when using the gearbox:
— The distance of the clutch pedal must be always
checked in the vehicles travel in order to sure whether
clutch separate or connect well. The condition of the
clutch affects the performance of shifting and the life of
synchronizer.
— It is better to gear up as possible on the vehicles travel
in order to keep the engine in a economic rotational

speed. These dynamics and economics of the entire

vehicle are increased by doing this.
— It is not permitted to speed up sharply or snub
frequently on the vehicles travel.
— When the vehicle start, the gearbox is in free position
and the clutch is engaged fully, it should keep the
engine at idle speed for 3~5 minutes. By doing this, the
gears, synchroshifter and bearings could get greased by
the oil in the gear. Otherwise the performance and
service life will be affected.
— It is forbidden to make the gearbox slide in neutral.
Gear up when the vehicle travel on a descending slope.
The back wheel rotates at high speed and drive the
vehicle to move, the relative rotational speed of the gear
box is high, and if make the gearbox change to neutral,
because the connection shaft’s speed is low relative to
the other shaft, so the synchroshifter and bearings are
easy to burn for the little oil carried by gear.
— The clutch pedal should be stamped thoroughly when
shifting, that is because the gearshift must to overcome
resistance to move to the needed position smoothly and
accurately.
— It must to stop engine and shift gear, otherwise the
reverse gear, gear sleeve and relative components will
be damaged.
The lubrication of Gearbox
— lubrication method: splash lubrication
— Brand choice and use level of lubricant oil. 80W/90
( GL-4 ) for vehicle gear of moderate duty. It is
forbidden to use bad lubricant oil or mix different
lubricant oil for use.
— The oil level of main box is 14L and 8L to
supplementary box. Parked the vehicle on level road
and fill the lubricant oil. The position of oiling locates

Maintenance of the Gearbox

— The gearbox should be cleared and the lubricant oil
should be renewal after 50 hours’ working time. What’s
more the fastener of the gearbox unit should be checked
to make sure whether they are loose. Both the oil
leakage of connection surface and oil seal is also tested.
— The gearbox should be demounted and the lubricant oil
should be renewal after 1200 hours’ working time. The
oil level should be checked at regular time. The check
should be performed after the vehicle park on level road
and the temperature become constant. After the oil filler
plug is screwed down, the oil is filled into oil filling
hole until overflow. The lubricant oil should be renewal
every 2400 hours’ of work time.
Maintenance of the Ventilating Plug
— The temperature of the oil in gearbox will increase in
the travel, which leads to a draught head between the
outside and inside of gearbox. The breather plug
balance the draught head in order to avoid broking the
seal components caused by high pressure. The broken
seal components can also results in oil leakage.
Therefore it is important to keep the breather plug clean
and open. The breather plug should be always checked
and cleared to keep the plug open.
2.6 Drive axle
2.6.1 Function
The power is transferred from gearbox into drive rear axle
through transmission shaft.
2.6.2 Structural Style and Operating Principle
This vehicle is one-wheel drive; the rear axle is fixed by 8 bolts.
The rear axle is assembled by axle housing, main speed reducer,
differential mechanism, differential axle, wheel reducer and unit
assembly of tire. The axle housing is mounted on the carriage, it
transferred the load from carriage to wheels, at the same time it
is the base for main reducer, differential axle, wheel reducer. The
main reducer is assembled by spiral bevel gear, slave spiral

bevel, differential mechanism and bracket. The main reducer is

primary reduction drive, the reduction ratio is 5.286. The main
function of the reducer is to enhance the torque of the
transmission system, reduce the rotational speed, and change the
direction of the speed by the spiral bevel gear pair. When the left
and right wheel rotates at different speed, the differential
mechanism works to reduce the wear to tire. The style of the
differential mechanism is planetary type. The differential axle,
planet gear and double differential carrier assemble the
differential mechanism. When the vehicle rides straightly, there
is no relative movement between the planet gear and differential
axle for the two axles running at same speed. Because of the
different distance traveling by two wheels at the same axle at
turning, the inside wheel and outside wheel will rotates at
different speed, thus relative movement will happen between the
planet gear and differential axle. What’s more, the different
pressure of two tires and different road condition can also cause
differential speed. The style of double axles is full floating axle.
They transfer the torque and movement from main reducer to the
wheel reducer. The wheel reducer is planetary gear mechanism;
the structure is shown in Figure.17. It consists of sun wheel,
planetary wheel, inner gear and planet carrier. The inner gear is
fixed at wheel carrying shaft. The planet carrier and tire is
mounted together. The sun wheel connects with differential axle.
The wheel reducer locates at the end of drive assembly. Its
function is to increase the torque and decrease the speed of the
drive unit in order to get the suitable working speed, thus the
force to the components before wheel reducer is decreased. The
tire assembly is the main walking arrangement. The 23.1-26
wider base low-section tire for mechanical loader is selected.
2.6.3 Maintenance
Following the lubricant requirement, the oil in main gear reducer
and wheel reducer should be filled and renewed at regular time
and the main driving axle should be filled with lubricating oil.
The lubrication condition of the driving axle should be paid
much attention.

2.6.4 Matters Need Attention on Lubrication Filling

z Park the road roller at level place before inspiring the oil
level and filling oil.
z The type and brand of the filling oil should be in accordance
with this manual, and the oil should be kept clean after
filtering and deposition for long time.
z The renewal of oil should be performed after the engine has
worked for minutes. Pour out the dirty oil, and fill into clean
oil, let the engine carrying idler for minutes, stop the
running and pour out the cleaning oil, then fill into the new
oil and make the engine rotate at low speed until the new oil
is filled to the right oil level.
z In the filling, not only the oil filling instructors and
container but also the filler well and slider should be
cleaned. Water, soil and foreign substance are forbidden to
enter in.
z If there is an oil dipstick and oil level indicator, fill the oil
following the indication of scratch. The oil level in rear axle
housing should be on a level with the lower end of porthole.

3 Hydraulic System

3.1 Hydraulic Vibrating System

3.1.1 Function
To cause the shake wheel of the road roller to vibrate and roll the
working object tough.
3.1.2 Structure and Operational Principle
Hydraulic vibrating system is assembled by vibration pump,
vibrating motor, hydraulic oil tank, oil filter and oil pipes etc.
The engine start the vibration pump to work, the vibration pump
first convert the mechanical energy into hydraulic energy, then
transfer the hydraulic energy into mechanical energy through
motor on the vibration wheel. The vibration pump drives the
vibration shaft and vibrates the vibration wheel. When the road
roller stops working, the power of the vibration pump is not
supplied by the electronic control system, and the motor is
unloading. The vibrating system circuit is closed.
100
Operation & Maintenance Manual──RS8140 Vibratory
Roller

The principle of the hydraulic system is shown in Figure7-6.

Figure7-6.Schematic diagram of mechanical driving

3.1.3 The Vibration Pump
The vibration pump is axial plunger pump which is fixed on the
motor. When the motor is working, the pump operates the
magnetic plug by two-point electric control, make the vibration
wheel vibrate to converse amplitude of vibration.
The overpower protection of the vibration system is realized by
the overload protection of the fluid pump. It is forbidden to start
the fluid pump under loading for the service life of the hydraulic
system and fluid pump. So the electric control circuit changer
must be put in zero position, and the diesel engine should rotates
at low speed, only when the temperature of the oil rise to certain
value, can the pump come to working.
Viscosity of the hydraulic oil has decreased with the increase of
the oil temperature. The temperature of hydraulic oil must be
controlled between 50℃~80℃ in case of the aging oil and the

-

decreasing of volumetric efficiency.

3.1.4 Vibration Motor
Vibration motor is axial piston motor. The motor converses the
hydraulic energy into mechanical energy of vibration wheel.
There is a flush valve in the motor, whose function is to avoid
overheating of the closed loop circuit. The motor is required to
be able rotates at double directions. The function of the oil outlet
on the top of motor is to guide the leaking oil and washing oil to
oil tank.
3.1.5 Maintenance of Hydraulic System
z The joint of every pin roll and the binding bolts should be
always inspected. If any breakage is discovered, it must be
repaired in time.
z The deformation of the stress position and the weld joint
should be paid much attention. If any breakage is discovered,
it must be repaired in time.
z Fill every pin with lubricant oil at regular time following the
table of lubrication, and the hydraulic oil tank should be
oiled at constant time, renew the oil and clear the filter. It is
better to discharge the oil in tank and cylinder and pipe
before renewing the oil.
z The operating oil temperature should be controlled between
50℃~80℃. When the temperature is low, it is better to run
the motor for a little while to increase the oil temperature
before work. However elimination of heat should be
strengthened at summer. If the temperature is overtopping, it
is better to take a rest before work.
z The delivery capacity of vibration pump is adjusted by
factory. It must not be adjusted by consumer.
z Notice for usage of hydraulic pump
— It is necessary to select hydraulic oil correctly. If the
viscosity of oil is great, the oil pump can’t inhale the oil
or cavitation erosion happens. If the viscosity of oil is
small, the leakage in the oil pump will increase and the
lubrication gets worse. In a word, the oil viscosity
relates not only the efficiency but also the service life of
102
Operation & Maintenance Manual──RS8140 Vibratory

oil pump and motor.

— The oil viscosity varies with the temperature; it
decreases with the increasing of temperature. Therefore
the oil temperature in the oil pump at work should be
kept under 90℃. The selected oil viscosity should be
influenced slightly by oil temperature in order to make
the oil pump work stably. What’s more, the oil should
be of good chemical stability and can resist foam.
Therefore the wear-resistant hydraulic oil is
recommended.
— No mechanical admixture and erode material in oil.
Otherwise the substance will be inhale into oil pump
and hydraulic system, which may wear the oil pump
and cause the hydraulic element unreliable. Therefore it
is necessary to mount a filter in the sucker of the oil
pump to keep the oil clean.
— The inlet and outlet joint of connection screw in the oil
pump should be tightened. The sealing device should be
reliable otherwise it may cause the in-breathing and oil
leakage, and then the performance of the oil pump is
affected.
3.2 Hydraulic Steering System
3.2.1 Function
Hydraulic steering system is applied in this system. The features
of the system are described as follows.
z The small dimension of the components, and compact
structure.
z It is easy and flexible to control.
z Reliable performance. All the components are
self-lubricated and of long service life.
z Simple maintenance. All the steering system needs not
special adjustment and it is easy to eliminate the failure.

! CAUCAUTION :Turning before the engine cut out is
not permitted.
The steering system is assembled by steering device, steering oil
pump, steering cylinder, monostable valve and hydraulic tank,
-
103

radiator, fuel filter etc.

3.2.2 Structure and Operational Principle
Hydraulic tank for steering is shared with hydraulic vibration
system which is amounted on the engine. Driving by engine, the
pump transfers the pressure oil to the steering service through
monostable valve.
The rotational speed of hydraulic steering device depends on the
oil discharge. So the sharp turning can generate great force, and
the great force may break the release spring, even fail or broke
the steering system.
3.2.3 Maintenance
z When the cylinder starts to use, the screwed connection
should be loosened, and rotate the oil pump at low speed to
bleed air until no foam coming out of oil.
z If the steering wheel is hard to operate or fail to work, it
should be checked carefully for reason. The steering wheel
should not be turned firmly and the steering device can not
be demounted frequently in case of broking components.

4 VIBRATION WHEEL

4.1 Function
To make the vibration wheel of the road roller vibrate in order to
roll the work object firmly.
4.2 Structure and Operational Principle

Vibration wheel 2.Bump (when assembled)

Figure7-7 Vibration wheel

104
Operation & Maintenance Manual──RS8140 Vibratory
Roller

The main components of the vibration system are the vibration

wheel connected with front carriage. The vibration wheel is
integral. It is assembled by vibration round die, right and left
exciter, bearing house, spline shaft, running gear and connector
etc. The vibration round-die can rotate and run through the unit
assemblage of right-left running bearings.
When the vibration system is working, the fluid pumps export
the hydraulic oil from hydraulic oil tank to hydraulic motor, the
motor drive the left exciter through coupling and rotate the right
exciter13 through spline shaft. Thus the eccentric load in
rotating eccentric unit generates the exciting force.
The hydraulic motor can rotate in normal-reverse direction. It
make the angle between the movable eccentric mass and fixed
eccentric mass vary with the rotation, thus the centrifugal force
are superposed or decreased forming two kinds of exciting force
and amplitude. Different vibration frequency is created by
changing the motor’s rotational speed.
4.3 Maintenance of Vibrate Wheel
z The vibration damper is the key component in road roller. It
can not only ensure the vibration wheel’s movement but also
reduce the vibration influence on frame. Therefore the
damper provides the driver a comfortable environment and
reduces the breakage to components. It is no good traveling
for long distance or traveling on rough road for the road
roller because damper maybe damaged.
z Twelve vibration dampers on the side of vibration wheel are
mounted and adjusted by adjusting shim. The decrements of
the dampers are controlled at about 3mm.
z If the road roller is not used for long time, the front carriage
should be surrounded up in order to reduce the formation
caused by shearing force and prolong the damper’s service
life.
z Because the damper is a wearing part, the damper should be
used carefully and checked always. It is necessary to change
new rubber damper in the case of crack on the rubber or
dehiscence between the rubber and metal plate.
-

z The lubricant oil in vibration wheel is used to oil the

vibration bearing on the side of vibration shaft. When the oil
needs to be drained, the vibration wheel should be rotated to
bottom and the plug screw 3 should be declutched. When
the oil needs to be filled, the vibration wheel should be
rotated to top and fill lubricant oil after the plug screw 3 is
dismounted.
z When the vehicle is used for first time, if the temperature of
oil in ring flange on the side of vibration wheel is high, the
oil level and oil quality should be checked. The oil level
should be checked once a month (every 200 hours).

5 Brake System

The braking system includes parking braking system and

traveling braking system.
5.1 Parking Braking System
The parking braking system is used for parking. The styles of
braking system are friction sheave and flexible shaft controlling
respectively. The brake pan is connected with output shaft of
gearbox, and the braking pin roll is fixed on the gearbox body.
When the brake bar is tightened, the generated force is
transferred to break crank through flexible shaft and make the
brake rise brake pan, the transmission shaft is stopped and the
vehicle is parked. This system is suitable to parking grade of
20%
5.2 Traveling Braking System
z The styles of traveling braking system are one-pipe, gas-cap
drive and caliper disc pan. It is assembled by air compressor,
safety valve, gas cylinder, single-barrel brake valve, assistor
pump), brake and pipes etc.
z The air compressor is mounted on the right side of engine.
When the engine works, the air compressor compresses the air
into gas cylinder through oil water separator. The set pressure of
safety valve is 0.8Mpa. When the pressure is over the value, the
safety valve will open and discharge part of compressed air.
z The brake valve connects with gas cylinder through pipe.
106
Operation & Maintenance Manual──RS8140 Vibratory
Roller

When the brake pedal is stamped, the compressed air from gas
cylinder enters into the cylinder of the brake booster cylinder
which is mounted on the left side of carriage. The air push the
piston to move in right direction resisting the spring, then the
small piston in the brake oil cylinder is moved and the brake
fluid is forced to enter brake under high pressure. Because the
area of piston in gas cylinder is greater than piston in oil cylinder,
the increased pressure is as 18 times as input pressure. For
example, when the input pressure is 0.8 MPa, the output
pressure is 14.4 MPa.

The structure of brake assembly for RS8140 roller is shown

below. There are four pairs of brake which are mounted on the
two sides of the rear axle. The brake is assembled by clamp,
friction disk, piston, feeding pump cap, pin roll etc. When the
brake is working, the brake oil under high pressure from the
brake base pump enters into the oil cylinder in the main and
supplementary clamp, and move piston and top cup, thus the
brake pads is gripped and move with rear axle, therefore the
roller is stopped.

5.3 Maintenance and Adjustment

The brake system should be kept in good condition to make the
system reliable. The main purpose of maintenance is to prevent
oil leakage. So it is necessary to fill oil, renew oil and release
part of air in brake hydraulic system.
z The brake system should be checked carefully for leakage
before every drawing-out. The oil leakage can be observed

108
Operation & Maintenance Manual──RS8140 Vibratory
Roller

directly, gas leakage can be inspected by observing the gas

pressure indicator. If the engine is working, the pressure
increases slowly. However, when the engine is stopped, the
pressure decreases sharply. This case means heavy leakage.
The other method to check leakage is to coat soapy water on
the joint, braking air valve and air exhaust opening.
z The brake oil in actuator’s cup should be kept full. In the
working time, the brake oil level must be kept above one
half of oil cup. The brake oil should not be substituted by
other mineral oil or bad oil in case of damaging the rubber
seal components. If the brake oil looks dim and with water,
smelling abnormal or fells not lubricating, the oil should be
renewed. All the brake hydraulic pipes must be cleaned
thoroughly.
z It is must to discharge air after oil filling. The step is as
follows.
a、 Put the gearbox in neutral position and start the
engine, charge the gas cylinder to nominal pressure.
b、Stamp the brake valve for some times in order to
increase the pressure of the actuator, then stamp the
brake pedal and let someone loosen the brake
forceps discharge screw. If there are lots of foam in
brake oil overflowed from discharge screw and low
pressure, the screw should be tightened. Then lift
the brake pedal, repeat above step.
c、 When the brake oil overflowed from discharge
screw is clear and the pressure is high with no foam,
the discharge screw should be tightened. To clear
the surround remaining oil and fill the actuator oil
cup to full, and cover oil cap finally.
d、The operation of other brake forceps is following
the step b and c. Pay attention to self safety and
make sure the gearbox in neutral position after
strengthen brake when discharging the air.
The brake pads and brake pan should be kept clean without
of dirt. When the thickness of the backing strap is worn to 5,
-
109
Operation & Maintenance Manual──RS8140 Vibratory
Roller

the strap should be exchanged.

z Open the water draining valve to release the water in gas
cylinder after every shift.

6 Electrical System

6.1 Accumulator Batteries (Batteries)

The machine use 6-QW-120B type accumulator batteries with 12
volt by series connection. The negative poles of the first group
batteries connect with the positive poles of the second group
batteries. The negative poles of the second group batteries
connect to earth. The positive poles of the first group batteries
connect with disaster box, and then connect with electrical
equipment. The positive poles of the batteries connect with
starting engine by heavy gage wires; therefore, electric switch
lock can start, and supply electricity to electrical equipment.
Matters need attentions on the usage of batteries are as follows.
z The batteries mounted on the both sides of the rear carriage
should be fixed tightly in order to avoid damage raised by
the thrashing in riding, and the connectors to batteries must
be jointed compactly.
z The outer of the batteries should be always kept clean and
dry in order to prevent leakage badly.
z If the batteries consume too much power, resulting in
severely falling of electro-hydraulic specific gravity, we
should charge them immediately, or take apart the batteries
and charge them. It is forbidden to lay the batteries aside for
long time to prevent corrosion to polar plate.
z It is not permitted to lay metal things on the batteries to
avoid causing short circuit. It is forbidden to check the
batteries are electrophorus by shorting directly on the pole
of the batteries with metal tools such as screwdriver or wire
and so on. Otherwise the pole of the batteries may be
damaged by the sparkle, and the capacity of the batteries
may be weakened largely.
z Before the electrical system is working or removing battery
cell wires, it is necessary to cut off the power to avoid
110
Operation & Maintenance Manual──RS8140 Vibratory
Roller

causing a short circuit or a fire.

6.2 Silicon-rectifying Generator and Governor
The machine is mounted with JF2503 type interior adjuster and
silicon rectifying generator, which are both diesel engine
complements. The voltage of the generator is 28 V, and the
current is 55 A. Please refer to electrical expansion connecting
diagram for how to connect the generator and governor.
In normal conditions, the generator charges the battery, and
supplies electricity to electrical equipment at the same time.
Matters need attention on the maintenance of silicon rectifying
generator and governor are as follows.
z For the generator, the negative pole of batteries must be
connected to earth, and should not be reversely connected.
Otherwise, the diodes of the generator will be short and
discharge immediately, and may damage part of circuit.
z For the governor, the wires of the connector which are
marked with “ignition” and “magnetic field” should be
correctly connected. Otherwise, the connection point will be
burned out because of frequently cutting off load current,
which leads damage of adjuster.
z During the generator is operating, it is forbidden to connect
the “armature” connector with outer shell of the generator to
check whether the generator is generating electricity.
Otherwise the diodes may be damaged with fire.
z It is forbidden to connect the connector of the generator’s
magnetic field with iron to avoid damage to the governor.
z When checking insulating property of the generator by
220V AC or megameter, it is necessary to divide all the
bonds of the leading wires of diodes. Otherwise only by
using high countercheck of universal meter can the
generator be checked.
z After the generator has operated for about 1200 hours, it is
necessary to take apart it and inspect it. The inspection items
includes:
— Clear greasy dirt of the outer and inner of the generator.
— Check and clear the bearing and slip-rings. If the
-
111
Operation & Maintenance Manual──RS8140 Vibratory
Roller

bearing is loose, replace new one. The slip-rings should

be polished by “00” type abrasive paper.
— Check the condition of the carbon brush. If the carbon
brush wears badly, it is necessary to replace new one.
— Check the condition of the carbon brush frame, and find
whether it is insulated with outer shell or not. If the
carbon brush’s elasticity is too weak, replace it by a
new one.
— Check diodes one by one by using high countercheck of
universal meter. When the diodes are normal, the
forward value of resistance is about 10 ohm, and the
inverse value of resistance is above 10 kilo. If the
difference between the forward and inverse value is
very small or very big, the diodes are damaged and
should be replaced.
— Check whether the inner connectors are fastened tightly
or not.
— If the adjustor fails to work, it is necessary to open the
outer shell and check that the contactor is ablative or
not. If the contactor is ablative slightly, we may polish
them with sand paper; if the voltage of the adjustor is
too low, we should regulate it once again. The gap
length should be regulated according to rules by factory.
6.3 Starting Motor
The type of the starting engine of diesel engine is QD285KS—
24V—7.5kW. The starting engine is started up by using key
switch JK—406.
Notes for the usage of starting engine are as follows.
z Please often check condition of the connection, and make
sure the connection screws are fixed tightly.
z Please keep clean when using, and avoid entry of the water
steam.
z Please maintain starting engine at regular time and clear
away the inner greasy dirt with gasoline oil, and polish
commutator and electromagnetic switch contactor with “0”
type abrasive paper.
