1. Natural
Topography- Honolulu is located on the southeastern part of Oahu, this city expands as
far from the coast and the 35 mile Mountain Range. The island was formed from one
massive volcano that slowly eroded. All over the island there are bays, craters, ridges,
and valleys in which all were formed from the volcanic origin. The city of Honolulu
experiences a hot, semi-arid climate meaning the precipitation levels during the summer
are low , but not as low as a desert. The average high temperatures this city faces are
80-90 ° F, and average lows of 65-75 °F. The biome of Honolulu is a tropical rainforest in
which these forests have trees and warm temperatures all year long, and tropical
rainforests are found at elevations from about sea level.

2. Native Flora and Fauna

Native Animal- Hawaiian Hoary Bat/Opeapea (Lasiurus cinereus)
These bats are named after their wing shape that resembles a taro leaf. These bats
have very good agility along with eyesight which allows the bats to successfully catch prey but
also but be hunted or caught by predators or humans often.
Like all other bats, they use echolocation to hunt for prey and also avoid their predators. This
helps them safely access food which can be used for biomimicry.

3. Native Flora and Fauna

Native Plant- Hibiscus Brackenridgei (Ma’o Hau Hele)
These flowers are 4 to 6 inches wide and have 5 egg-shaped pedals. It grows in dry
forests and shrublands that are at lower elevations. It is a protected plant due to it being
endangered. It can be found in hawaiian gardens since few plants remain in the wild, due to
overgrazing by animals that are non-native. This flower is the official state flower for Hawaii.

Transportation:
Light Rails - These are more environmentally friendly than
busses are but still accomplish the same goal to move people
across the city while causing less pollution

Bike Share Program - This allows anyone to use bikes provided

by the city which will be very efficient in a city like Honolulu
because it is a short distance from one side to another
Public Bus System - Although light rails are better for the environment, also including public bus
systems will offer for easier transportation and less of a need for cars

Biomimicry:

Humpback Whales and Energy- Humpback Whales, unlike other aquatic organisms living near
the coast of Honolulu, have flippers with uneven, curvy edges called tubercles. These allow the
whales to be very dynamic and it gives them the ability to change direction and maneuver
through the water very efficiently. The outstanding performance of these flippers, due to the
ability for water to move very smoothly through the curves, has inspired many companies
around the world to incorporate this feature into wind turbines and fans. With the tubercle-like
design, performance of turbines and fans has drastically increased, along with safety.
