Prior to the concert, we all prepared ourselves physically and mentally. It all went as
planned, except for the fact that I for one, kept rushing the rhythm or slowing down the rhythm
which then caused a domino effect impacting the people surrounding me. The songs that the
men sang were phenomenal; but there was this one song that didn’t really speak to me. The
song was supposed to be uplifting, joyful song, but it turned out to be very nonchalantly
unmusical. Some of the people up there had no type of facial expression, it was as if they were
either not really part of the ensemble, they were just there for some good old fashion company.

I wouldn't say I did a good job because I still feel self conscious about my voice, despite
all the compliments I have received. However, at the concert I did a fairly good job, In years
prior, I could not sing up higher in my register, and I could only go up to a certain level of pitch
accuracy, then have my voice either give up or scream the notes. While I did struggle early on,
with rigorous practice my register has grown exponentially. When I first started chorus, I was put
right into first tenor; I for one did not know what that meant. After my very first concert, I finally
got the memo. I thought I could no do it, so I told my voice teacher that I could not sing higher in
my register. They then replied by saying, “yes you can, give it some time.” So I did, and here I
am belting some high notes as if I am in an opera.

As an artist, we too make money mistakes that we can control most of the time. I for one
need to work on rhythm and sight reading with more clarity. With determination and practice, I
can fix them. I can resolve them and conquer my problems. Another thing I need to get a better
understanding of is the tenor voice and learn more on how to place the voice to make it sound
more musical without straining it or going to flat or sharp.

Facial expression is a necessity in order to make beautiful music. Artists need to feel the
music and act upon it in the most pleasant and musical way possible to portray the story.
Without correctly interpreting the tone of the song, the audience would be confused and you
would be as well. It’s all about communication and the interpretation of the music to the
audience, you need to connect with them, putting a magic spell on them.

Singing is a physical activity as that takes mental preparation and we have to think of the
phrase, the text, the placement of the voice. Also, we have to know how to correctly
communicate it to the audience. The concert was a success, but it needed a little more
modulations in order to succeed with that point. By keeping the air flowing and relaxing into it,
that will make the whole concept of singing even more easier to do. Sining gives sound to our
spirits and it’s our way of expressing our feelings since the dawn of time.
