Information Sheet 1.3-1 Operating System

Learning Objectives:
After readingthis INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Define Operating System.
2. Enumerate the functions/ features of an Operating System.
3. Identify utilities that will enhance (help/ extend Operating System capabilities.

This information sheet will co'ær the Operating System. Likewise, it's feature, function and type. In addition, the
enhancement of operating system using the utility software and related issues in Operating System.

WHAT IS AN OPERATING SYSTEM?

An operating system is the most important software that runs on a

computer. It manages the computer's memory, processes, and all of its
software and hardware. It also allows you to communicate with the computer
without knowing how to speak the computer's language. Without an operating
system, a computer is useless.

FUNCTIONS OF OPERATING SYSTEM

1. PROVIDING USER INTERFACE

When you work on a computer, you use a set of items on the screen. Taken together, these items are called user interface.
The most common types of user interfaces are graphical and command line.

a. Graphical User Interface

Most common GUI are Windows, OS X, Gnome, KDE.

Uses a mouse to work with graphical objects such as windows, menus, icons, buttons, and other tools.
Uses a desktop as metaphor in which the background of the GUI is said to be a desktop on
which you have your graphical tools and which you can store your work.
Shortcuts open programs or documents.
Open documents have additional object such as title bar
(identifies the windows contents and also contains
Minimize, Restore, and Close buttons), menu bar
(provides list of command and options for specific
program), tool bars (contain buttons that let you issue
command quickly), scroll bars (let you view parts of the
program or the file that do not fit in the window), and
various buttons).
Task switching is the process of moving from one window
to anothen
Dialog boxes allow direct input b. Command Line
Interface
Older interface such as DOS, Linux, UNIX uses
typewritten commands rath er than graphical
objects to execute taskse In DOS, the prompt
usually includes the identification for the active
disk drive (a letter followed by a colon), a
backlash and a greater than symbol (>), as in is
not DOS ad is most often used by administrator
to run non-GUI programs from managing and
troubleshooting Windows.
User must remember all commands. Included
in all GUIs

2. RUNNING PROGRAMS

Many different applications supported

System calls — provides consistent access to OS
features. Share information between programs:

3. MANAGING HARDWARE

The Operating System act as an intermediary between programs and hardware. In a computer network, the operating
system also mediates between your computer and other devices on the network.
The Operating System uses interrupt requests (IRQs) to help the CPU coordinates.
Device driver controls the hardware. The programs are called drivers because they allow the operating system and other
programs to activate and use — that is, "driv€' the hardware device . Most of new software you will buy will work
with your printer, monitor, and other equipment without requiring you to install any special driver

4. ORGANIZING FILES AND FOLDERS

Organized storage
Creates long file names
Folders can be created and nested
All storage devices work consistently

TYPES OF OPERATING SYSTEM

The three most common operating systems for personal are Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac OS X, and
Linux.

Each operating system's GUI has a different look and feel, so if you switch to a different operating system it may seem
unfamiliar at first. However, modem operating systems are designed to be easy to use, and most of the basic principles are the
same.

MICROSOFT WINDOWS

Microsoft created the Windows operating system in the mid1980s. Over the years, there have been many different
versions of Windows.

VERSIONS OF MICROSOFT WINDOWS

LINUX (pronounced LINN-ux) is a family of open-source operating systems, which means they can
be modified and distributed by anyone around the world. This is different from proprietary
software like Windows, which can only be modified by the company that oums it (Microsoft). The
advantages of Linux are that it is free, and there are many different distributions—or
can choose from. Each distribution has a different look and feel, and the
most popular ones include Ubuntu, Mint, and Fedora.

Linux is named after Linus Torvalds, who created the Linux kernel in 1991. The kernel is
the computer code that is the central part of an operating system.

NETWORK OPERATING SYSTEM

Network Operating System runs on a server and provides server the capability to manage data, users, groups, security
applications, and other networking functions. The primary purpose of the network operating system is to allow shared file and
printer access among multiple computer in a network, typically a local area network (LAN), a private network or to other networks.
Example of network operating systems are Microsoft Windows 2003, Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Unix, Linux, Mac
OS X, Novell Netware, and BSD.

Advantages Disadvantages

Errors in operating systems cause three main types of problems:
System Chris tian I
Paje
Jaromamay
a. System crashes and instabilities these can happen due to a software bug typically in the operating system can make the
system more unstable or may eœn crash the system by themselves. This varies of system freezing and becoming
unreyponsiœ which would cause the user the need to reboot.

b. Security flaws — some software errors leave a door open for the system to be broken by unauthorized intruders may try to
use these gain illegal access to your system. Patching these flaws often will help keep your computer secure.

c. Sometimes errors in operating system will cause the computer not to work correctly with some peripheral devices such as
printers.

ENHANCING AN OS WITH UTILITY SOFTW ARE

Utilities that enhance or extends the operating system's capabilities, or that simply offer new features not provided by the
operating system itself As a new operating system is imprmæd and updated, the functionality of popular utilities is included with
subsequent releases of the OS.

While it is difficult to give a definite list of utility software categories, the most common types that ordinaxy people use
are disk and file management. Internet security and OS customization tools.
To complicate matters further, there are many packaged utility suites that
combine two or more utilities into one bundle. The following are small
selections of popular utilities.

1. Back-up Utilities Many newer Operating System feature built-in

backup utilities, but fewer-rich back-up software is available from
other sources. These utilities not help you transfer file to a back-up
medium, they also help organize files, update back-ups, and restore
back-ups to disk in case of data loss.

2. Antivirus can examine the contents of a disk or RAM for hidden

viruses and files that may act as host for virus code. Effective antivirus
products not only detect viruses; they also help you recover data that
has been lost because of a virus.

3. Firewall It keeps a check of all incoming and outgoing

connections of your computer network (usually LANs) and based on
the rules configured on the firewall, it will allow/ deny access to
certain computers, or technically speaking IP addresses.

A few other things it does is it maintains a log of all incoming and outgoing connections along with the date and
time stamp, shows what connections were blocked and why, and of course the best part, prevents unknown people from
getting into your network from the internet (hackers, vandals, script kiddies!).

But make no mistake. A firewall is the LEAST you can do to secutt your network — that's right. A firewall is the
most basic thing to have in place when it comes to securing your computer or an entire network.

Since you have understood what is a firewall, let's on to understand the types of firewalls:

a. Hardware-based Firewalls — these are physical

machines Mith network ports. Commonly installed at the
entry point of your network. These are used to protect an
entire network from internet threats and are generally used
at offices.

b. Software-based Firewalls - These are commonly associated
with antivirus software. You can download it on your Windows
computer and install it yourself. These are used to protect a
single computer from internet threats. Generally used for
personal use. Most popular are Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky and
Comodo Fire wall

4. Intrusion Detection — while a firewall offers protection from predictable intrusion,

intrusion detection software reveals the types of attacks a firewall is thwarting, creating logs of
the attempts (depending on how you configure it) notifying you of certain intrusion attempts. In
the competitive utility software field, intrusion detection is often added as a feature to firewall or bundle Internet security progams.

5. Screen Savers are popular utilities, although they little

purpose than to hide what would otherwise be displayed on the screen.
Screen savers display a moving image on the screen and were
originally displayed images from into the monitor. A
screen saver automatically appears when a keyboard or pointing
devices has been used for a specific period of time. Screen savers
available from many sources, and you can even use your oum picture
and graphic files with most screen saver program

PERIPHERALS/DEVICES

Learning Objectives:
After readingthis INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:

1. Define Peripherals/ Device

2. Enumerate types of Peripherals/ devices.
3. Distinguish input and output devices.

This information sheet will cover the presentation of Peripherals/Devices. The differences between them, the
specifications and functionality in relation to its usage.

WHAT IS PERIPHERALS/DEVICE?
A peripheral is a piece of computer hardware that is added to a computer in order to expand its abilities. The term
peripheral is used to describe those devices that are optional in nature, as opposed to hardware that is either demanded or always
required in principle. The main distinction among peripherals is the way they are connected to your computer. They can be
connected internally or externally.

BUSES — a subsystem that transfers data between computer components inside a computer or between computers. Unlike a point-
to-point connection, a bus can logically connect several peripherals over the same set of wires.
Each bus defines its set of connectors to physically plug devices, cards or cables together. There are two types of buses: internal and
external. Internal buses are connections to various internal components. External buses are connections to various external
components. There are differentkinds of slots that internal and external devices can connect to.

n.tTERNAL

TYPE OF SLOTS

There are many different kinds of internal buses, but only a handful of popúlar ones. Different computers come with
different kinds and number of slots.

A. PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) is common in modern PCs. This kind of bus is being succeeded by
PCI Express. Typical

cards, sound cards, modems, extra ports such as USB or serial, IV tuner
cards and disk controllers. Video cards have outgrown the capabilities of PCI
because of their higher bandwidth requirements.

PCI Express was introduced by Intel in 2004. PCI SLOT

It was designed to replace the general-purpose PCI expansion bus and the AGP graphics card interface. PCI express is not a bus but
instead a point-to-point connection of serial links called lanes. PCI Express cards have faster bandwidth then PCI cards which make
them ideal for high-end video cards.

B. PCMCIA (also referred to as PC Card) is the type of bus used for laptop
computers. PCMCIA was originally designed for computer memoiY expansion,
but the existence of a usable general standard for notebook peripherals led to
many kinds of devices being made available in this form. "Typical devices
include network cards, modems, and hard disks. PCMCIA

C. AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) is a high-speed point-to-point channel for

attaching a graphics card to a computer's motherboard, primarily to assist in
the acceleration of 3D computer graphics. AGP has been replaced over the past
couple years by PCI Express. AGP cards and motherboards are still available to buy, but they are
becomingless common.

ACCELERATED GRAPHIC PORT

INTERFACE CARDS/ EXPANSION CARDS

Expansion cards are inserted into an expansion slot on the computer's motherboard
and create an electronic link between the two with edge connectors so data can be
communicated across.

1. SOUND CARD Alternatively referred to as an audio output device, sound

board, or audio card. A sound card is an expansion card or IC for producing
sound on a computer that can be heard through speakers or
headphones.
Although the computer does not need a sound device to function, they
are included on every machine in one form or another, either in an
expansion slot (sound card) or on the motherboard (onboard).

2. VIDEO CARD — Alternatively known as a display adapter, graphics

card, video adapter, video board, or video controller, a video card is an
IC or internal board that creates a picture on a display. Video cards can
offer such functions as the rendering of highquality 3D and 2D
graphics, the ability to connect to a "IV and the ability to display
graphics across multiple display screens.

3. NETWORK CARD — Often called a Network Interface Card or LAN
Adapter, a network card is an expansion card which allows a computer to
connect to a computer network such as a Local Area Network or Wide
Area Network. In more modern machines almost all computers have a
network interface built directly into the motherboard.

4. SERIAL AND PARALLEL CARDS - A parallel port is only able to transmit

data one way to a secondary device, commonly a printer or similar, using
a dual data transmission system
This type of one-way transmission was also used for older
external storage devices. Serial ports are able to process data in a twoway
direction, and are often slightly slower than parallel ports due to the more
accurate transmission of data they send. Both serial ports and parallel ports
have been mostly superseded by the faster and more efficient USB port in
modern computers.

S. USB CARD — A USB eöpansion card is used to provide additional connection ports to a computer by connecting the card to
the motherboard. USB is short for Universal Serial Bus, and is the most common type of port found in modern
computers. Peripherals such as printers, keyboards, printers, removable flash drives and mice can be attached to the
computer.

6. FIREWIRE CARD is used to provide USB Card certtoloey.com computers

with an IEEE 1394 interface connection, also known as a firewire. Recently
Apple has begun replacing this port with the Thunderbolt interface on all
modern Mac computers. The port itself is very similar to a USB
connection, although USB is much more popular across a range of cross-
platform devices and the two are not interchangeable.

7. STORAGE CARD — also called a flash memory card or simply a memoty

card that is connected to a computer in order to provide users with extra space to
store their data on. These cards vary in both physical size and data capacity,
and are constantly being dex.eloped and upgraded. Some of the most common
on the market today include the Secure Digital (SD) Card, the Mini/ Micro SD
Card, and the Multimedia Card (MMC).
Storage Card - Certiology.com

8. M ODEM CARD — allows a computer to send an analog carrier signal

carrying digital information, and decodes the of this signal in return to
reproduce the original digital data. The most common way of doing this in
the past was by using electrical signals transmitted telephone lines,
although more modern systems such as satellite, Wi-Fi, mobile phones
and

mobile broadband modems also use this type of communication. Wireless

modems can be embedded inside of a device or be external to it, and can
be locked to only receive certain types of frequency signals, for example
only those from one particular network providen

9. WIRELESS CELLULARCARD The most common use of this card is to allow a

device to connect to Wi-Fi, using a wireless router or access point. The Wi-Fi
point receives data through wires and transmits it using radio waves, for a
wireless card inside of a device to pick up and decode, as well as receiving the
signals in the opposite direction.

10. TV TUNER CARD— a card Which is inserted into a computer to allow a device
to receive television signals that would not otherwise be suited to picking them
up. Cards are usually either PCI, mini PCI or PCIs, or sometimes as an external
USB device. Most cards have an inbuilt processor to free up space from the
system's CPU and ease the pressure on the computer. Cards can be either
analog or digital depending on which type of television the user wishes to view,
and many hybrid tuners exist which are able to switch between the two types. High-end tuner cards often include a
special chip to encode and decode the data being transmitted, however smaller and cheaper cards are less TVtuner
Card Ce'tiolOeV.çOrn likely to have this capability due to the high power it
takes to run them.

11. VIDEO CAPTURE CARD is used to allow a computer to an analog video signal into
a digital video data form. Many TV tuner cards double up as video capture
cards, allowing the user to record 'IV transmissions as they are being broadcast
and viewed.

EXTERNAL

TYPES OF CONNECTION

1. USB (Universal Serial Bus) is a serial bus standard to interface devices, USB was designed to allow many peripherals to
be connected using a single standardized interface socket and to the plug-and-play capabilities by allowing devices to be
connected and disconnected without rebooting the computer. Other convenient features include providing power to low-
Date Document
consumption devices without the need for an external power supply and allowing many No: 2
devices to be used without
requiring manufacturer specific, individual device drivers to be installed

2. Firewire (technically known as IEEE 1394 and also known as i.LINK for Sony) is a serial bus interface standard for high-
speed communications and isochronous real-time data transfer, frequently used in a personal computer. Firewire has
replaced Parallel ports in many applications. It has been adopted as the High Definition AudioVideo Network Alliance
(HANA) standard connection interface for A/ V (audio/ visual) component communication and control. Almost all modern
digital camcorders have included this connection.

3. The PS/2 connector is used for connecting some keyboards and mice to a PC
compatible computer system. The keyboard and mouse interfaces are
electrically similar with the main difference being that open collector outputs are
required on both ends of the keyboard interface to allow bidirectional
communication. If a PS/2 mouse is connected to a PS/2 keyboard port, the mouse
may not be recognized by the computer depending on configuration.
DEVICES

1. REMOVABLE STORAGE - The same kinds of CD and DVD drives

that could come built-in on your computer can also be attached
externally You might only have a CD-ROM drive built-in to your
computer but you need a CD writer to burn CDs. Flash drives are
usually USB ones either in the form USB sticks or very small,
portable devices. USB flash drives are small, fast, removable, rewritable, and long-lasting, Storage capacities range
from 64MB to 32GB or more.

2. NON-REMOVABLE STORAGE can be a hard drive that is connected externally. External hard drives come in many
shapes and sizes like flash drives do. An external hard drive is usually connected by USB but you can also have a
networked hard drive which will connect to your network which allows all computers on that network to access
that hard drive.

INPUT DEVICES — which are connected to computer and they are used to send the data to the computer internally, are known as
the input devices. Following are some important input devices

1. KEYBOARD

This is the main input device for desktop (old version uses PS2 and port, new version uses USB
cable and port) and laptop systems. It has keys for:

• text entry

• entering numbers

• carrying out special functions such as printing the screen display.

2. MOUSE AND TRACKBALL

It is a pointing device that allows the user to move a pointer or cursor across a monitor screen. The mouse is a very important
input device. It helpsyou to do many things, such

• controlling the cursor or pointer

• opening up menus

• selecting items from menus by clicking the mouse button

• opening up software by clicking the mouse button.

• dragging icons to move them into folders, to save files.

Recent changes to improve the functionality of 'mice' include cordless mice, optical mice, scroll wheels and extra buttons.

Trackball

Works like an upside down mouse. Users move the ball Which in turn moves a cursor on the
screen. Date Document No: 2

3. TRACKPADS

Track pads are found on laptops. The track pad does the job of the mouse and lets you •

• control the cursor by ragging our finger across the pad

• select items from menus or open up files by tapping on the pad.

4. SCANNER

Used to capture or input pictures and text into computer systems. They work by shining a
light onto a page in the scanner. A detector picks up the levels of light reflected from the
page and these ale turned into digital numbers which are then processed by the
computer. Speciál Optical Recognition Programs (OCR) can be used to recognize text.
These programs turn pictures representing text on a page into a document which
can be processed by a word processor program.

S. CAMERAS

Cameras are used to capture moving and still images. With photo sharing web sites
and web sites specializing in video, for example Youftlbe, they are becoming
increasingly popular. Web Cams are increasingly used in communications with
other users.

OUPUT DEVICES — are those devices Which do not send the data into computer. In fact, through these devices, the computer
communicates with the user. They contain the devices like displays, printers etc. Since they att vital part of the computer system,
so no one should have enough knowledge about them. Some of these output devices are as follows;

1. PRINTERS

Computers were supposed to bring about the dream of a 'paperless office' This now looks very unlikely to happen because
paper has got some advantages over when looking at information.

Advantages of Paper

1. It is very portable. The information on a sheetof paperis easily passed around, and many people can look at the
information at the same time.

2. It is cheap. Initial costs of computers mean there is no comparison with the cost of using paper.

3. Not everyone has computer equipment to view information, or it may be difficult to use computers in some situations.

Paper copies, or hard copies, of information will always be needed. Printers (and plotters) are used to produce these hard
copies. The main different types of printer, and how they are compared against each other, are eöplained below.

a. Laser Printers— this type of printer is the main one used in schools, offices and industry
because it produces high-quality printouts very quickly, with good resolution.

How it works?

It uses a laser to make a negatiN.e electrical image of the page on a positively charged drum,
which then picks up positively charged toner. The drum rolls over the paper and the toner is heated to print on to the
page. The toner cartridge many copies before needing replaced keepingrunning costs down.
Laser printers are generally more expensive than inkjet printers, but their
running costs are lower.

b. Inkjet Printers — Basic models of this type of printer are cheap to buy, and let
you print in color. The quality of the best inl<et's can be very high and can be
used for photographs.

Inkjet printers spray special ink on the paper to form characters and graphics.
The cost of replacing ink cartridges can be high with this type of printer because they need replaced frequently.
They print quite quickly, but can be quite slow when printing graphics. They are slower than laser printers.

2. SPEAKERS— When outputting sounds the sound card reverses the process and changes binary data held in the
sound files into analogue signals that are used control the speakers attached to the computer. Speakers convert
analogue audio signals into the equivalent air vibrations in order to make audible
sound. A pair of speakers plugs into the computer's sound card.

3. SCREEN AND MONITORS Screens are the LCD most common of output devices.
They show what's going in the computer. There are really three main types.

ae Liquid Cristal Display (LCD) screen

HOW DO 1 CONNECT PERIPHERAL DEVICES TO MY COMPUTER?

Installation is a pathway to transmit data between device and computer.

Wired connection may require only connecting wire to computer and may
require adding

Most computers include a variety built-in ports for connecting devices.

Today, USB (Universal Serial Bus) is the preferred way to connect devices.
Wireless connection typically requires transceiver on both devices
Infrared Light
Bluetooth
Wi-Fi
If peripheral device requires a port not on your computer, you install an expansion
card. Some device requires software, called device driver, to set-up
communication.

GUIDELINES FOR PURCHASD.IG PERIPI-ERAL DEVICES:

1 . Consider the task for which you'll use the computer.

2. Determine your budget.
3. Select a computer platform.
4. Choose a desktop, notebook, or tablet configuration.

5. Select processor type and speed.

6. Select an operating system.
7. Consider your storage needs.

Information Sheet 1.3-5 DEVICE DRIVER

Learning Objective:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Define Device Driver.

This information sheet will cover the presentation of Device Drivers. It also presents on how to install, configure, update
and remove the device driver.

THE ROLE OF DRIVERS

A driver (sometimes called a device driver) is software that enables a computer to work with a particular device. Although
a device might be installed on a computer, the computer's operating system cannot communicate with the device until the driver
for that device has been installed and configured. It is the software that tells the computer how to work with the device so that
device can perform its job.

There are drivers for nearly every type of computer device and peripheral including:

• Input devices, such as mouse devices.

• Hard and floppy disk drives and controllers.

• Multimedia devices, such as microphones, cameras, and recorders. MCs.

• Printers, plotters, and tape drives.

Usually, the computer's operating system works with the driver to make the device perform. Printers provide a good illustration
of how drivers are used. Printers built by different manufacturers have different features and function. It is impossible for computer
and operating-system manufacturers make driver available for each of their printer. Before your computer can send documents to a
printer, you must install, or load the for that printer so that you will be able to communicate with it.

As a general rule, manufacturers of components, such as peripherals or cards that must be physically installed, are
responsible for supplying the drivers for their equipment. For example , NIC manufacturers are responsible for making drivers
available for their cards. Drivers are usually included on a disk that accompanies computer equipment when it is purchased.
Drivers can also be downloaded from a service such as The Microsoft Network (MSN), CompuSene, or the manufacturer's Internet
site or bulletin board.

WORKING WITH DRIVERS

Working with drivers encompasses a variety of tasks, including installation, configuring, updating and removal.

INSTALLING DRIVERS

Most popular network operating system use interactive graphical interfaces, or dialog boxes, that guide the installer
through the process. Microsoft Windows NT Server, for example , features a utility called the Control Panel. This employs dialog
boxes that lead the user through the process of installing a NIC driver. Figure below shows several of the dialog boxes that appear
during the installation of a NIC network driver on Windows NT.

Installing a MC on
Windows NT Server
CONFIGURING DRIVERS

Network interface card usually

configurable options that must be set
correctly for the NIC to function properly.
Most of the newer NICs are
software-configurable or Plug and Play (PnP)
compliant. There are no DIP switches or
jumpers to configure. The configuration is
accomplished through the software during
or after the installation of the drivers, or—as
with a PnP-compliant system, such as
Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows 98—the
operating system attempts to configure the
hardware device automatically. While
Windows NT 4.0 is currently not PnP-
compliant, it will attempt to recognize your
devices. If the attempt is not successful, you
will be required to supply the drivers from a
disk provided by the manufacturer. If you
already have that disk with the correct
drivers, it is often easier simply to tell
Windows NT where to find them.

UPDATING DRIVERS

Occasionally, a manufacturer will write additions or changes to a driver to improve a component's performance.
Manufacturers can send these drivers changes by mail to registered users, post them on an Internet bulletin board, or make them
available through a service such as The Microsoft Network (MSN), CompuServe, or the manufacturer's Internet site. The user can
download and then install the updated driver.

The process of updating drivers is similar to installing them, although you might need to remove the old driver first. Be
sure to look for any readme files that come with the software. The readme files will inform you of the correct procedure for
installation. Some drivers, especially those that have been downloaded from the Internet or a bulletin board, are in the form of
executable files. For these, double-click on the file name , and the executable file will perform the installation.

REM OVING DRIVERS

It is sometimes necessary to remove drivers, such as when the original driver conflicts with the newest If a piece of
equipment is being removed, remove its drivers at the same time, too, to ensure that no conflicts arise between the old drivers and
any new drivers that are installed.

The process of removing a driver is similar to that of installing a driver. Figure below shows the Adapters tab of the
Network Window in a Windows NT work session. In this window, you need only select the dftR2r and then click on the Remove
button.

other program will be using these files anymore) .dlls at shutdown. This will remove them when the applications that were using
them are terminated (basically the uninstaller-tells Windows to verify the files for deletion). When Windows has closed the program,
it will then delete any file that is no longer assigned to a program to clean up the computer.
