 THE CLOTHING OF THE
FUTURE IS DIPPED IN SILVER.
While we’re still waiting on our life's to get as
high-tech as Tony Stark from the movie Ironman,
flying suits and robot dog walkers Back to the
Future Part II promised us, the future of fashion has
arrived. At least according to numerous designers
during the fall 2018 season. From silvery coats, suits
and dresses to iridescent accessories, it’s time we all
looked like extras from old star wars movie. While
gold, silver, and bronze fabrics seem to pop up
everywhere these days, Space-inspired references
have been scattered across the runways for several
seasons now, but this time around flashes of metallic
made it more tangible than ever before.

Though Gold and silver have been used in

apparel since ancient times when these glowing hues
were used to signify nobility and status. Originally
referred to as ‘Cloth of Gold,’ metallic fabrics were
woven on Byzantine looms during the 7th and
8th centuries and were reserved for only the most
affluent members of the Byzantine Empire. In 2015,
Engineers at Stanford University figured out how
to coat clothing in a meshwork of silver nanowire
so that it not only insulates better than regular
clothes but also generates its own heat. Lamé fabrics
are also a favorite of Hollywood, both on the red
carpet and onscreen. These beautiful fabrics have
such a distinct feel and appearance that they are
often considered to be ‘futuristic’ and are frequently
used in the costume design for many science fiction
television and film projects.
As with all trends when it comes to a color, they
come in all different shapes and styles imaginable.
Some more popular than others with silver going
full on for shoes and skirts, mainly. I’m not sure
who began the shoe trend in specific, but I know
Stella McCartney did a chic pair a few years ago
and some of her shoes are trending again. Like the
platform sneakers with a metallic top. Balenciaga’s
silver boots are also major atm and Saint Laurent,
Alberta Ferretti, Giorgio Armani, Balmain have
done some great work. As for the skirts, the pleated
midi skirts, blazers, and space suit in flashy silver
foil are trending and trending high. Every other
fashion enthusiast seems to work them or crave
them. Jackets and bags are also major for silver
metallic!
One of the most fun things to style is texture
or items in a statement material. I’m talking about
denim, (faux) leather and suede but also neoprene,
(faux) fur, lace and also shiny metallic fabrics. I love
the ability to play with the material of a clothing piece
and contrast it with other fun statement materials,
colors or details. And as you’ve might have guessed,
silver metallic (as it’s trending right now) is a fun
material to play with. It works with about anything
as the silver color works as a neutral and the shiny
feature is subtle enough to go with anything. As for
the colors, the silver will highlight anything and
will, therefore as the 1980s continues to inspire
designers, silver and platinum metallic emerge as
key 'colors' for party wear and day dressing. It’s even
stated that silver is one of the best shades to match
with other colors and was among the key colors
for women's apparel A/W 18/19 catwalk. Wearing
blush, lavender, forest green, dove blue, lime green
or yellow will make it pop. Neutrals as black and
white are also chic to do. If you were to avoid some
colors you probably should n’t go for brown and
silver metallic. Just because a brown color in any
shade is normally warm and the silver metallic is
cold and that could clash in an unfavorable way.
But, on the other hand, I can definitely see a tanned
leather jacket work with silver, so perhaps you can
go for it – after all.
