B. Review

1.) The teacher facilitates the review by recalling the Cartesian Plane.

The Cartesian Plane

The position of a point on a Cartesian plane is represented by referring to it in

terms of a horizontal line and a vertical line, which are called the x-axis and y-
axis respectively. The point of intersection of the x-axis and the y-axis is called
the origin. Often, we draw a set of axes on graph paper as shown below.
2.) The teacher will give a pre-test for Grade 9.

In a ¼ sheet of paper, plot the following points in the Cartesian Plane.

1. (0,9)
2. (-5,9)
3. (4,1)
4. (-2,0)
5. (3,3)

C. Motivation
The teacher will explain the basic concept of the slope. (Grades 8 and 9)

D. Activities
The teacher will group the students into three groups per grade level and let them
answer the following items.

For Grade 8 students:

Plot each pair of points and determine the slope.
Group 1 Group 2 Group 3
(3,4) ; (5,7) (1,-3) ; (4,-7) (-2,3) ; (4,3)
(5,2) ; (9,4) (-2,1) ; (2,-2) (3,-2) ; (3,5)
For Grade 9 students:
In each of the following, determine the slope and formulate the equation of the line.
Group 1 Group 2 Group 3
(3,4) ; (5,7) (1,-3) ; (4,-7) (-2,3) ; (4,3)
(5,2) ; (9,4) (-2,1) ; (2,-2) (3,-2) ; (3,5)

E. Application

1.) For Grade 8

The teacher will let students interpret the slope with respect to the given
statement, and will let them decide whether they are agree, disagree, strongly
agree or strongly disagree to it.

Statement: The slope m = 5/2 is a preferred slope to make stairs.

2.) For Grade 9

The teacher will task the students to determine the equation of the line given
the slope and a point, will let them interpret the slope with respect to the
given statement whether they are agree, disagree, strongly agree or strongly
disagree to it.

Slope m = 7/2
Point (1, 1)
Statement: The slope m = 7/2 is a preferred slope to make stairs.

F. Generalization

1.) For Grade 8

For any two points with coordinates (x1, y1) and (x2, y2), where x1≠x2 and y1 ≠ y2,
the slope m of the line passing through them is

m = (y2 – y1) / (x2 – x1) or (y1 – y2) / (x1 – x2),

where m is the slope and (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) are any two points on the Cartesian
Plane.

2.) For Grade 9

Given a slope m and a point (x1, y1) or (x2, y2), substitute them to the slope
formula m = (y2 – y1) / (x2 – x1) and cross-multiply to get into the form (y2 – y1)
= m(x2 – x1).
IV. Evaluation/Assessment

For Grade 8:

In a ½ sheet of paper, given two points, connect them and determine the slope.

2.) (3, 5) ; (5, 1)
3.) (-2, 5) ; (-1, 2)
4.) (3, -5) ; (-1, 1)
5.) (1, -7) ; (3, 6)

For Grade 9

In a ½ sheet of paper, determine the slope and formulate the equation of the line.
