Wedge Failure
Fig. 4 Steroplot data required for wedge failure analysis.
Input
The Steroplot plot data obtained after plotting the steronet for the planes of wedge is taken as
input such as Ψa, Ψb, ψ5, ψ na.nb, θ24, θ45, θ2.na, θ13, θ35, θ1.nb, φA, φB, γr γw, cA, cB and
H.
Formula
sin θ13
Y = sin θ35 cosθ1.nb (18)
3 γw γw
FOS = γr (cA X + cB Y) + (A − 2γr X) tanφA + (B − 2γr Y) tanφB (19)
The equations 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 is used to calculate the FOS for wedge failure.
Circular Failure
Input
Cu = Undrained Cohesion (or) Undrained Shear Strength in pounds
d = Horizontal distance betwwen circle centre to the centre of sliding mass in meter
Formula
Cu×R×L
FOS = (20)
W×d
The equation 20 gives the formula to calculate FOS for circular failure.
General Analysis
Input
C = Cohesion in Kpa.
H = Height of Bench in m.
Ψ = Angle of Discontinuity.
Φ = Angle of Friction.
C = Cohesion in Kpa.
H = Height of Bench in m.
d = Horizontal distance between circle centre to the centre of sliding mass in meter
Formula
The equations 1, 2 is used to calculate FOS for the plane failure drained condition. The
equations 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 are used to calculate FOS for the plane failure undrained where tensile
crack is face. The equations 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 are used to calculate FOS for the plane failure
undrained where tensile crack is present in upper slope face. The equations 15, 16, 17, 18, 19
are used to calculate FOS for wedge failure. The equation 20 is used to calculate the FOS for
circular failure. The comparison takes place between all the obtained FOS and the output is
given as least FOS obtained from all the conditions.
