Tyson, Lois. “Marxist Criticism.” Critical Theory Today: A user-friendly guide, 3rd Ed.,

Routledge, 2015, pp. 50-56.

Karl Marx’s ideology of Marxism is based on the motive behind all social classes. Also,

shows how people are been discriminated due to their social status. Marxism explains that many

repressive ideologies, such as classism, are so involved in our society that people classify other

people all the time, which is not correct since it can affect people emotionally.

The source provides information connected to the Marxist theory, for example, classism.

Also, this section shows how American society thinks by using the concept of classism, and how

affects America.

Nike. “Dream Crazy.” YouTube, 5 September. 2018, https://youtu.be/Fq2CvmgoO7I

This commercial or advertisement was the one used for my multimodal project and was

analyzed through a Marxist lens to give a different point of view. Also, I applied rhetorical

devices such as ethos, pathos, and logos in order to expand my analysis. The video shows

different athletes throughout the video and the adversities that they overcome to become top-

level athletes. The “Dream Crazy” commercial is narrated by Colin Kaepernick who was

controversial when the add was released.

The video provided examples that were analyzed through Marxism lens and the rhetorical

devices. Also, the video provides evidence for my argument, which is that the Nike’s

commercial main goal is to push people to become better athletes.

Marxism is very important for our society due to the political and philosophical

influence. In the presentation, we can find important information that will help us understand the

Marxist term better. The source provides different terminologies and definitions. For example, an

individual’s consciousness is determined by their class or mode of production. Our society is

guilty of creating many of the restrictive ideologies.

The source supports my analysis since it helps to understand how many athletes felt

before they became superstars. Also, the presentation can be used to identify other problems in

the video. Furthermore, the ideologies were able to be used in the video by providing concepts in

order to expand the analysis.

Browne, M. Neil., Keeley, Stuart. “Are There Any Fallacies in the Reasoning?” Asking the

Right Questions, Vasudeva, Mary, 12th` Edition, Pearson, pp.71-99, 2017.

Appeal to questionable authority means supporting a conclusion by citing an authority

who lacks special expertise on the subject. In other words, this source explains what this fallacy

is. This means that if people want to spread an idea, they will show a public figure saying that

idea. This is due to the fact that a public figure can make that information or idea more relevant.

However, most of the time those ideas are not relevant at all. On the other hand, in Nike’s

commercial “Dream Crazy” the idea that people are been classified is well expressed by Colin

Kaepernick.

This source provides relevant information since is showing how brands utilized public

figures so that they can spread an idea. These ideas and be positive and negative. In this case, the

idea is positive because the commercial wants our society to become better athletes. By reading

this source, it allows people to analyze the commercial even better, which can change the

perspective of how people see the add.

This article provided me the necessary information to describe the rhetorical device ethos,

which was create by Aristotle a Greek philosopher. The article also provides the definition

of logos and pathos. Furthermore, the source provides examples of how rhetoric can be used

in a regular day. The article was really helpful for my analysis because is on of the things

that I will be talking about in my multimodal project. Also, the information presented in the

source is relevant.
